Hi everyone, I'm hoping I can get some recommendations as I plan to get a new phone next month. I have slightly weirder-than-average phone needs due to my job - I'm in the airline industry, with a lot of overseas routes - and I can't quite find a -perfect- combo but I've settled on three in particular that might suit me.

I have to buy off-the-shelf as my provider (Koodo) won't let me tab anything unless I change my really excellent phone plan. I live in Canada, but can buy from the U.S. or Japan next month.

My ideal phone (obviously doesn't exist but here's what I can dream for):

1) Top-of-the-line camera (s7 and z5 hit this point)

2) Dual-sim (I'm trying to avoid having to carry a second phone when I'm travelling, especially in the U.S.)

3) Needs to be functional in Japan (I spend a few days there every month and want to use prepaid data)

4) Stylish design, preferably not in black (Love the z5's pink, but that one doesn't come in the Dual option)

5) Smallish size (My tiny girl-hands aside, I had to nix the OnePlus 2 from the list because it was too large to fit in my uniform pocket at work)

6) Ability to use Google Fi would have been a big plus, but that's only going to be the Nexus line (would have been nice to use it in lots of countries without buying a new SIM card everywhere)

So here's the conclusion I came to while pricing each of the ones I liked:

s7 - Great camera, perfect size, fast, but expensive, apparently there is a dual variant? (Though not sure of a reputable place to buy it just yet)

z5 - Great camera. Dual sim....OR snazzy colour. I guess I choose 1 of 2.

6p - A little larger than I'd prefer, camera not great for shaky hands, but can be used for Fi

Are there any solid phones I'm missing here that hit a couple of my points? What's the preferred phone of other frequent travellers...?

Thanks for your help!

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 02:22 PM PDT

My dad has an S3 and it is filled up. He wants to transfer the files to the computer, but the computer won't recognize it. There is no notification to change to MTP. We tried different USB cables, ports, and computers but it still doesn't work. We tried uploading to drive, but it just crashes. Is there any other method I can attempt?

Galaxy S2 mic not working when calling

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 11:30 AM PDT

I have some issues with my Galaxy S2. When I'm calling with someone, they can't hear me unless I put them on speaker. Last time I used a pin to clean the mic hole, but this time it won't work. Also, there is an icon on my screen when I'm calling, and I can't find out what it means. Here is a screen shot: http://imgur.com/4s95X4A, I circled the icon in red. When I put it on speaker, the icon disappears. Thanks for helping me out!

Thoughts on Grey Market/Chinese Androids. Which ones are reliable, how much of a risk is buying of them?

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 07:23 AM PDT

From what I understand and read, you can often find android phonese from Chinese Firms with Equal or better specs to mainstream ones for less than half the price.

Can somebody point me in the direction of some good reading material/buying guide, etc for European citizens.

Samsung logo keeps looping. I screwed up. Pleaaase help!

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 03:59 AM PDT

Hi! I hate my life, thanks in advance, anyway I had a problem for about a month now where my phone used to take 15 min to boot, after trying many solutions, I read somewhere to delete ODEX files and after trying that in many ways I went to system/apps and deleted ODEX files there with Root Explorer which turned out to be a biiig mistake, my phone turns on without me holding the power button and when the Samsung Logo shows up it stays for a few seconds before it starts again (only the logo, the phone doesn't reboot) and it stays like that forever. I have several very necessary files on my phone (work related) and I can't factory reset. I'm in hell right now Pleaaaaaaaaaase help me, I'll be really really thankful, please!

Blocked IMEI

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 12:20 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this but:

I bought a phone (LG V10) on Swappa back on March 1. Everything worked fine until a couple days ago, the phone was blocked. I called T-Mobile and was informed the phone was not paid off. Contacted the seller to see what's going on, and was told "All I'm being told is that something got flagged on the phone and they will need to physically have the device to fix it."

Is anyone familiar with this? Is there any reason why T-Mobile would need the device physically to unblock it? What exactly needs fixing? I'm not very knowledgeable about phones, but I'm assuming if the IMEI was blocked, it can be unblocked on T-Mobile's end without needing the physical phone right? I am really hesitant about sending the device back to the seller and am considering filing a dispute with Paypal. I'm just not sure what to do at this point.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Stock Galaxy S6 entered bootloop (x-post /r/galaxys6)

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 12:17 PM PDT

Hello everyone,

I searched through other topics about bootloop issues, but I don't understand them well because I haven't installed any custom firmware or rooted the phone, so I don't know all of the terminology or menus, and my problem might be different.

Last night my phone randomly crashed, and now it will not fully boot. It either gets stuck on the Samsung logo or the AT&T logo. I am able to enter the recovery menus, including download mode, but have not been able to boot in Safe Mode. After clearing the cache the first time I was able to boot the phone temporarily. In this time I enabled developer options as well as USB debugging because they seemed potentially helpful. Soon after services started crashing quickly, and the phone rebooted again.

The problem is, I do not know exactly what to do next, or what my options are now that I enabled USB debugging (or even how to access it). Is there a way to retrieve files through the recovery mode, or is it possible to repair/reflash the firmware without data loss?

Thank you for your help.

Replacement for Mightytext?

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 03:11 PM PDT

I send much more than 250 texts a month and need a replacement for Mightytext since it has a limit. I tried MySMS but it sends an advertisement every 15 or so texts.

Any suggestions on texting from my computer? Thanks!

Need help with a weird location bug

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 02:45 PM PDT

I'm having an issue with location services that I just can't figure out. Google Maps, along with some other applications, tinder being a good example, can't seem to access my precise location anymore. It started when I was in the middle of a long drive down the highway about a week ago, and still hasn't resolved itself. It persists through reboots and through airplane mode being flipped on and off, and I know I still have location settings turned on. I downloaded Waze after this bug appears and it seems to still work. And my device can still get a GPS lock, as I downloaded GPS Status and it gets a lock and provides me with accurate coordinates.

I'm currently running a Samsung Galaxy S4, and Cyanogenmod 12.1

Galaxy S5 - Why did my power button stop working in Marshmallow?

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 10:55 AM PDT

I typically use my Galaxy S5's power button to turn off the screen/lock the phone and to turn it off or reboot. You know, typical power button-y things. Imagine my surprise when I come to find that following the update to Marshmallow (Canada/Koodo) the power button doesn't do anything. I've searched high and low, and can't seem to find anyone else complaining about this.

I've also browsed config/settings screens, but can't find anything on this.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this, and get the same functionality out of the button as I did in Lollipop? I'd rather not do this with a 3rd party app, if I can help it.

Thanks!

Full screen ads in apps that normally don't have full screen ads

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 02:38 PM PDT

Hi,

Since a month or so, my LG G2 (Android 5.0.2, unrooted) is displaying full screen ads by Ad Choice, most of the time for games in the Google Play Store. This happens in multiple apps and my internet browser. It seems to pop up randomly and in apps that usually don't show full screen ads, like Twitter and the Dutch public news agency app.

What happens is that I'm using an app and suddenly the screen doesn't seem to react for a few seconds. Then a full screen pop up appears, which I can click away by clicking the cross. The phone then continues to function normally.

I seem to have been infected with something or other, but haven't been able to locate what it is. I can't remember installing any new apps lately. I have already cleared my browser data and cache, restarted my phone, but this did not help.

Are there any other possible solutions? I'd rather not factory reset it if it isn't the last resort. Thanks in advance!

Iphone to Android texts - out of order

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 02:24 PM PDT

Hey Everyone,

So I have an IPhone, 6s, and my GF has an android phone, Galaxy S6. I've noticed that whenever we'd send long texts to each other, they would be arrive split up. Which is acceptable, but they are not numbered/ordered on her end. I was told that this may be a setting on her end perhaps? We do have time and date syncing already enabled.

We are sending/receiving on the same carrier as well - sprint.

Any help would be appreciated!

Tethering Data Monitoring

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 06:48 AM PDT

Hi,

I work in an IT support team and our field sales team, tether there chromebooks to there andriod phones for mobile data.

Recently there has been a massive spike in data usage, and we can not figure out what has caused it. All we can see is the tethering has used 99% of the data, this has happened across 4 devices in a week, from 100-200mb to 5-6gb in a couple of days. We have had a break down of the times the data was used, it was during business hours (the users had not been at home streaming for the family). Could anyone recommend some tools we could install on the phone or chromebook to tell us what is using all the data over time and any tools to cap the data usage.

Thanks in advance.

Old theme shows up after updates

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 12:22 PM PDT

Whenever an app updates the icon set goes back to an old theme I had selected. The only way I have found to reset this is to change themes and then change it back again to what I have.

What's causing this?

Is it possible to wake up an app once in an hour or so, to check for notifications?

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 10:40 PM PDT

I want to use this for the Facebook's official app. I am aware that there are very good alternatives, but I like the design and the UX of the official one.

I have Greenify, but AFAIK, it only allows to completely hibernate the app.

If it matters, I use OnePlus One, on CM13.

Edit: I have root and Xposed

Help! LG g4 Semi died but data may be saveable

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 10:56 AM PDT

Yesterday, my LG G4 just froze and a minute later perished.

now, it still vibrates from time to time when I try to turn it on, yet 99.9% of the time the screen is blank!

LG will send a technician to replace my mother board in two days.

so by then I'm trying to save the data on my phone.

As I've said, it responds by vibrating, and when I plug in the USB I hear it plugging yet nothing happens (tried reinstalling the drivers several times)

What Im asking is this, Is there any way for me to copy the entire phone onto my PC? LG bridge etc not working, all I hear is the usb connecting yet see nothing (The screen works yet it is blank, phone vibrates sometimes)

PLEASE HELP

this is how my pc recognizes the phone "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)"

Setting Home timezone when traveling abroad?

Posted: 07 Jun 2016 01:03 AM PDT

I live in the states, but am traveling abroad in Europe. My current timezone is automatically updated through the cell network, and its correct. However, on my lockscreen there is a secondary "Home" time displayed, but the time is incorrect. Can this timezone be manually adjusted/corrected without throwing off my current European time?

Edit: as /u/hagela pointed out, changing the clock settings does the trick. For those interested in doing the same, go to the main settings screen and search for "dual clock"
