Posted: 12 Dec 2016 08:54 AM PST I've done a few searches on reddit and elsewhere, and I'm not finding much discussion regarding google apps, permissions, and pop ups. I'm a lay person; mid thirties, but I'd like to think I'm a bit security conscious. Since my LG Nexus updated to I think version 6.0, denying permissions became pretty easy, so I did. Apps only get permissions I want to give them. I like that feature, and it made me feel a bit more secure. I denied google play services everything but storage, as I figured it's main purpose was to download apps (?) Then it got annoying. Suddenly my gmail app wanted google play services to have access to things gmail didn't need IMO, reminding me via multiple pop ups every time I attempted to type (it still functions fine despite me denying permissions) This week, with the latest maps update, it got downright creepy. First of all, I started getting warnings when maps isn't even open. When I click the warning I again get told google play services needs access to things that, IMO, I don't want maps to be accessing. I don't even turn on my GPS unless I am traveling and actually require navigation. While I understand that some features of apps may not work without certain access, the constant pop ups and warnings are making some apps damn near un-useable. I used the play store to email google about the gmail, maps and google play services issues, and received boiler plate responses. Today, kind of annoyed, I opened maps for the first time in weeks, and there were a bunch of pins all over it. Clicked on a couple, and some were businesses I had in my contacts. I checked, and no, google maps did NOT have permission to access my contacts but it obviously had. Some were people whose addresses I must have entered at some point (some hillariously wrong thanks to CamCard). To me, this is evidence that maps has accessed things I did not allow it to. Not cool at all. I generally like google apps but this recent experience makes me feel like I should remove all the google apps and replace them with alternatives, including killing my gmail address and removing all my contacts. Am I being overly sensitive? Should I give up and let big brother google into everything (since they obviously are anyway) or should I become more techsavy so I can work around google? If the latter, point the way for me please! TL/DR Google play services pop ups are all but demanding access to everything about my phone, despite apparent necessity, or actual app usage. Also seems to have ignored a lack of permissions in latest maps update. [link] [comments] |
Has Google Keyboard been infinitely chugging RAM for anyone else lately? Posted: 12 Dec 2016 07:58 AM PST I changed phones about three months ago, and got an HTC 10 (International version). Amazing device all around, by the way, I absolutely love it. I've been having having one single problem, and I wanted to know if anyone else had experienced it, be it with a 10 or any other device: Google Keyboard. Every time I open it, after about a day it's ram usage will go up by about 100mb. After a week it'll be up to about 500-700mb if I don't force stop the process before. What the hell? I really don't want to change keyboards, but this is the only app that is behaving this way, and it's incredibly annoying to have to force stop the process and reselect the keyboard every day lest all my apps start refreshing every time I switch to them. Has anyone else experienced the same, either recently or for a while already? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Dec 2016 12:55 PM PST I'd like to root my Kyocera Hydro Shore phone and try a few roms, but I can't find anything. How can I find and install them? [link] [comments] |
DAC connected over OTG cable outputs mono Posted: 12 Dec 2016 10:52 AM PST I want to use my Behringer USB200 DAC with my Nexus 5 (Marshmallow 6.0.1, rooted, Xposed available) over a USB OTG cable. The DAC outputs mono sound when using both Poweramp and Google Play Music. I verified that the DAC can output stereo sound. Is this a bandwidth problem? If so, how could I fix it? Edit: Behringer UCA200 USB DAC, sorry. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Dec 2016 02:20 PM PST Hi guys, tell me if this isn't the proper place to post this or just remove it I guess. I have a LG V10 phone with ATT and it looks like ATT just released a new update. I don't know about y'all but I really don't want the new update and I know if I don't do something soon, they will force the update to my phone. So do y'all have any suggestions on how to block this update? I would really like to just blacklist the server where it gets the update from, so if you know what server the update comes from that would be great. If not, I am willing to root it. Although, I have been trying to root it for a few months but it looks like ATT blocked me from booting it into fastboot. Anyone have any suggestions or know what server it uses? [link] [comments] |
Take OTA Nougat update before relocking bootloader or relock then update? Posted: 12 Dec 2016 01:07 PM PST I bought a used Nexus 6 a little over a year ago and the bootloader was already unlocked. Recently I read that an unlocked bootloader will prevent the use of Android Pay so I'd like to lock it. Right now, I'm on 6.0.1 with the Oct security patch and it still passes Safety Net, but I'm sure it won't after taking the update. After watching a couple of videos, it looks to be a pretty straight forward process, so I think that'll be ok, but I am not sure if it is better to swipe away the update that's been sitting in my notifications and lock first or go ahead and accept the OTA and lock later. Maybe it makes no difference at all. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
A good VR headset for the ZTE ZMAX PRO? Posted: 12 Dec 2016 01:06 PM PST Trying to not spend too much, but I'd be willing if it's worth the money, the phone is a 6 inch so that's why I am a bit worried about finding a headset. Thanks so much for the help. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Dec 2016 01:05 PM PST I hope this is the right subreddit for this. I have a GS7 Edge on VZW (sadly on both accounts). It's stuck in a boot loop - no problem, right? Just download the factory images and push them via odin. Well I did that, and it's still in a boot loop. No problem, right? I'll just use Kies (well apparently that's dead, now) - so I got samsung switch -- that doesn't recognize it... Odin claims it "passes" Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Dec 2016 12:44 PM PST I'll be using the tablet to display images and videos as I go from classroom to classroom. Does anyone have experience with those two tablets, and/or have a recommendation for a tablet relevant to my situation? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Can I get rid of the "slide to unlock" screen when my device is unlocked? (Using Smart Lock in N) Posted: 12 Dec 2016 12:33 PM PST I've never password-protected my phone, and I've always kept the lock screen turned off. However, I just bought a Pixel XL, which has a fingerprint reader, so I'm giving it a shot. I'm also using the new Smart Lock feature, so my phone will auto-unlock for a variety of reasons. That makes having the added security much more tolerable. However, one thing I can't seem to get rid of is the "slide to unlock" screen. I know it's necessary when the phone is locked, but I don't want it to appear when it's unlocked. Is it possible to disable the slide-up screen when the phone is unlocked? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Is there any way I can trick my phone into dipping into my tethering allotment? Posted: 12 Dec 2016 12:29 PM PST I'm on a 2gb data plan on T-Mobile, but for some reason, I have 7gb tethering. Is there a user agent I can use on my phone to make t-mobile think I'm using my tethering? I have a feeling the answer is no, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Playing music from network-attached hard drive? Posted: 12 Dec 2016 12:29 PM PST I've been planning to put all my mp3 files onto a network-attached hard drive, and then get a cheap Android tablet on my local wifi network, plug it into my audio amplifier, and use that to play tunes. But now that I've started looking into it, it's not so obvious that there's an easy way to do this. Mounting an NAS and creating symlinks seems to require root, and even then may depend on available tools. Music player apps don't seem to be intended to get mp3 files from NAS. And if a particular music player app wants to refresh its database everytime that it's opened, I suppose that could be pretty slow over wifi. So before I go too far down this road, any advice from the AndroidQuestions redditors? [link] [comments] |
Keyboard shortcuts no longer work after updating to 7.1.1 Posted: 12 Dec 2016 12:24 PM PST I did a quick search and saw nothing like this problem. I updated my Nexus 5X to 7.1.1 (it was the OTA update, so I know I didn't screw anything up) about two days ago. Since then, my shortcuts, which worked perfectly before, no longer work. They are still listed in my personal dictionary, but won't be triggered if I'm typing them in my phone. Does anyone know a fix for this? I've tried re-entering them and it does work, but I have a lot of shortcuts programmed in. If I have to just redo them all, then that's what I'll do, but before I did that I thought I'd see if anyone else knew an easier/more efficient fix. Thanks in advance! EDIT: I'm not rooted or anything - completely stock. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Dec 2016 06:15 AM PST I need to automate few tasks; by default all radios (Data and Wifi), GPS is off to have long juice. So, it will sync my gmail and keep and stuff i tuned for sync Turn on Data and GPS every thirty minutes. So, I can trace my device in Android Device Manager incase I dropped it somewhere Is there a mechanism by which if I send my phone a certain text, it will turn on GPS/WIFI/DATA/ and enable force lock of screen. say password and produce loud alarm? Disable Google SmartLock password and auto-login for apps Posted: 12 Dec 2016 12:00 PM PST Hello /r/AndroidQuestions! I was wondering if anyone knew how to disable Google SmartLock Password saving. I have gone through all the stuff on forums and stackoverflow and everyone seems to know how to disable it for security purposes (phone lock screens and whatnot) but no one mentions how to disable it for saving passwords for apps. I currently have it disabled in my advanced security options, but it continues to hold passwords for my banking, facebook, imgur, and other accounts and attempts to automatically log into those apps when anyone opens the login screen. This is very annoying and I haven't been able to disable this as it is not something you can remove from the phone (build into the OS I think). Does anyone have any ideas? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Dec 2016 09:54 AM PST I have a Nexus 4, running Android 5.1.1. Today, out of the blue, I lost all my contacts/call logs. I still had my text messages, but these just appeared as numbers. After restarting my phone, some of these appeared as contacts again, though I'm still missing many contacts. Any Advice? [link] [comments] |
