Background app that gives you a new wallpaper daily

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 11:51 AM PDT

I switched from iOS to Android about a week ago and it is awesome! The customization is insane.

I'm looking for a certain app, but don't know if it exists.

Do you know any wallpaper apps that will automatically update my background daily to a new picture? I think something like that would be cool. Just like how Bing.com has a new background everyday, I think a daily new wallpaper would be nice.

Still no bluetooth device battery-level indication??

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 08:29 AM PDT

Hello!

So I've been searching the web for a while, and have not been able to find a solution for this. Basically what I want is to be able to see on my phone, how much battery there is left on my bluetooth headset? I know that iPhones (IOS) can do this, but apparently Android can't? I'm aware of those timer apps on the app store, but I don't like that solution, and it's not accurate enough.

Is there no way to get this? Android can't be beaten by IOS.

Question about getting Visual Voicemail to work on a non-nexus phone (Google Dialer)

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 08:38 AM PDT

I have the google Dialer installed on my S7 and it works great, but Im having trouble getting Visual Voicemail to work propery. Currently, I have google-voice set up as my VM and I have the option in GV to show voicemails in the dialer.

The list of voicemails show up in the Google Dialer, but when I go to play one, it says "couldn't load voicemail".

Any ideas?

So my S6 got run over by a car... can anyway

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 10:39 AM PDT

Like the title says, my phone was basically smashed to smithereens. It's in pieces. Is there any chance I could find whatever part inside that is holding all my files? I have pictures that cannot be replaced. I know my dumb ass should have backed them up, but I didn't. Is there any way this can be salvaged?

Does Hangouts Dialer support HD Voice?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 08:43 AM PDT

Currently, I'm on T-Mobile, just like the rest of my family, and we all get HD Voice when calling one another. However, I want to switch to a FreedomPop/Hangouts Dialer combo to save money. I've starting testing this combo before porting my number, but I can't get HD Voice when calling my family. Our devices are capable of this, and connection doesn't seem to matter, as I can't achieve this on data nor WiFi. However, please note that I'm the only one in the family with Hangouts, so Hangouts to Hangouts calls will be an issue if that's what HD Voice takes.

Thanks for your help.

Unwanted lock screen advertisements

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 04:14 PM PDT

A few days ago the attached image with rotating ads has been on my lock screen while charging. I've tried deleting recently installed apps with no help. Any other ideas on how to get rid of this?

OnePlus 3 won't play media on my truck's aftermarket head unit?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 04:11 PM PDT

I was hoping updating to 3.2.6 would've solved it, but nothing changed here. I can still make phone calls, can't listen to music and it's just a pain in the ass.

Do I Need to Do a Factory Reset Post-Update?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 12:13 PM PDT

I've heard plenty of times that it's recommended to factory reset after a Letter update. If I had the time and patience to do that I would, but I don't. I know it's not a mandatory thing but people have always said their performance gets a boost from it. I want that boost but not enough to spend so much time re-setting up my phone for two hours which is definitely how long it will take for me if not longer.

My question is, is there an alternative that may not give me as much of a boost but will still benefit me? Just some solution that's a little more doable? Like clearing the cache partition, etc.?

FYI I didn't factory reset my phone with Marshmallow and my phone's been working very well overall, but idk if it might get worse with Android N when it comes along.

How does the Android interface work Unix permission wise?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 12:13 PM PDT

I'd like to know how the backend/permissions work for Android(I'm using v4.1.2 on a s3 mini).

On android, I'm capable of running GUI applications which have different UID/GID-s on the system as seen in ps/top output.

On a linux desktop, all applications you run as your user, unless you use sudo/su to run software as someone else.

So how does android run GUI apps without throwing up permission denied errors and asking for password from the start?

I've looked around on search results and haven't found anyone discussing this.

ELI5: The difference between the leaked Pixel launcher, the Nexus launcher, and the Google Now launcher

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 10:51 PM PDT

So I know what the Google Now launcher is, mostly because it comes by default with Nexus phones. Which begs the question, if Nexus devices have the Google Now launcher, what's the Nexus launcher? I've seen it mentioned in all these articles about the Pixel launcher, and how the Pixel launcher is replacing it. And what is the Pixel launcher? Will it be exclusive to the upcoming Pixel phones, instead of them using the Google Now launcher?

I just softbricked my phone, reflashed stock, and had all of my data?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 11:57 AM PDT

I had the blue screen of death that tells me to go into emergency recover on smart switch to restore, so I went into odin and flashed my stock md5 file, and I had all of my data when it booted back. I didn't know that this was possible?

Traveling to Montreal for a week. What are my mobile service options?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 03:32 PM PDT

My wife and I are currently on the T-Mobile $30 100 minutes 5GB prepaid plan which offers no service in Canada. We have Nexus 6P and 5X for phones.

If I switch to another T-mobile plan, I'll have to jump through hoops to get this plan back. (Port my number to another carrier and then port it back to T-Mobile.) More trouble than it's worth.

When we visited Ireland and London, we just bought local (Three.ie and Three.co.uk) SIMs and did pay-as-you-go for about €10 and £10, respectively. Worked great.

Can we do something like that for Montreal?
I looked at Rogers, and it's $50/month for their prepaid plan, and that only has 500MB of data. Verizon (US) is even more expensive.

What about prepaid MVNOs in the US? Do any offer international data?

I think our best bet is probably Google Fi.

I keep accidently rejecting and answering calls when I grab my phone from my pocket, any fix?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 03:15 PM PDT

I wear a firearm pretty close to my pocket which makes it very difficult to grab the phone with my whole hand, and always results in me touching the screen and disconnecting or answering the call.

Is there a setting that that doesn't automatically turn the screen on when you get a call?

I have an S7 edge.

Is there a way to make my phone automatically back up to Google Drive regularly?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 02:58 PM PDT

I'm really lazy about backing up my phone, and I was wondering if there was a way to make my phone automatically backup to Google Drive regularly. I have an LG V10, and apparently there's some sort of hardware issue that causes it to brick sometimes, so I'd feel safer if I knew all of my stuff was backed up daily. Storage isn't an issue, I pay for a terabyte of storage on Drive.

disappeared SMS

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 11:07 AM PDT

Hello;
I gave someone my phone number and today I received an SMS from an unknown number (in that it wasn't any of my contacts) (so presumably that person)

However when I pulled the top menu down and clicked on the SMS then nothing happened and the message is not in my Messaging app either like it has disappeared

What method do I have for retrieving that lost SMS or is there some kind of 'recent contacts' history list from where I can see the phone numbers of people that have called/messaged me lately?

I already tried Wondershare DrFone and FonePaw recovery

Running MIUI 6.1.29 Beta on Redmi Note 3 (Android v 5.0.2) and GO Launcher
Checked block list
Thank you

Random restarts on brand new phone

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 02:52 PM PDT

I got a moto g 4th generation yesterday and it's awesome! What's not is I seem to be getting random restarts without warning or any clear cause. Should I just return the phone, or is this a simple fix?

Youtube and Google play are not downloading

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 07:11 AM PDT

I have 30mb/s internet from at&t, 28 from oakla speedtest. When I open youtube on my OP3 everything loads just fine but when I click a video it loads the first 3 or so seconds and then stops. Even when set to 144p. Even when I go on the web version of youtube both mobile and nonmobile it still fails to load. Google play will load fine but when installing an app it will sit at 0% for half an hour before it instantly loads the app. Dailymotion and vimeo both load with no problem at all.

It loads just fine on mobile data.

Edit: it works now and I have changed absolutely nothing.

Edit Again: It stopped working.

Pay with android?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 02:37 PM PDT

I know things like this exists but I'm looking for a fairly secure solution so pay with my phone when I leave my visa at home. Thinking of something where I need to put in a pass code or something before use? I know some you don't even need to unlock the phone. Not overly fond of that. Sorry if I haven't explained myself well I'm literally walking and typing.

Is there a way to VM an android operating system?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 02:28 PM PDT

I like certain apps and games however I would much rather just play them with a mouse. I also think it would be useful/fun to be able to run certain programs in a small vm window with an interface that is appropriately sized rather than just trying to have a small window with an interface meant to be much larger.

Is such a thing possible? If it is possible is is also legal?

Lastly would there be any unexpected inconveniences I should be aware of?

Notifications in Android: Coming from iOS to Android

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 02:20 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I've been using iOS for many years and just got an Android phone for work. I've heard for a long time how the notifications system in Android is superior to iOS but so far I have felt generally limited by Android's notifications. Any advice on how I can take advantage of Android's notifications system, or any thoughts on why Android's notifications are superior? Thanks!
