The Future of the Pixel [x-post from r/GooglePixel]

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 02:04 PM PDT

TL;DR - Google has to build a phone to prevent Samsung from undermining Android. Nexus couldn't do that, but Pixel can. It eventually has to compete on features and performance, and that means having their own manufacturing and their own chips.

The Issues

I see a lot of concern around the death of the Nexus pricing, but I think this move up-market is required for two reasons.

The first is that OnePlus and others are now providing good quality, near-flagship spec phones. These phones are priced at the mid-market, are mostly stock and true to Google's vision of Android. If you want a Nexus-like device in 2017, buy the OnePlus 4.

The second is that Google can no longer sit back and worry about angering their partners by competing against them. LG, HTC, and Sony have almost no market presence, and right now Samsung is the biggest threat to Android. Samsung is a far bigger threat to Android than Apple.

The Threat

Google has tried to stay out of the phone hardware business since Android was launched. They've provided guidance in the form of specs and Nexus reference devices. When the Android phone market was diverse, they could afford to ignore it.

But Samsung dominates the market so much at this point that they are becoming synonymous with Android. Worse yet, they actively seek to drive their own vision of Android distinct from Google.

  • Their OS differs the most of any manufacturer in look and feel from the vanilla Android experience.
  • Their OS is the most distinct from AOSP of any manufacturer. Apps frequently have to have Samsung-specific fixes implemented just to run on Samsung devices.
  • Their OS is bloated, huge, and slow and creates a negative impression of the performance of Android.
  • Their button and fingerprint sensor configuration is the farthest from what Google prefers. Physical home button, fingerprint sensor on the front, reversed multitask and back buttons.

On top of all of this, Samsung frequently makes noises about leaving AOSP completely and competing directly against Google using Tizen. This would be quite a big gamble for Samsung, but it would be a horrible thing for Android as well in a market where Samsung is 90% of Android flagships.

So Google needs to assert control of Android lest it be undermined and possibly replaced by Samsung.

The Solution

In order to do this they need to start putting out Google-branded phones that compete at the top of the market. That means building a phone with top-level performance and features, and of course the pricing will have to reflect that.

Hopefully this year's Pixel is only the first step. In order to actually compete against Apple and Samsung they will need the following:

  • They need their own design and manufacturing capability. No more asking HTC or LG to design and build stuff. They need to buy HTC or someone similar and start building their own phones. In a perfect world, this would happen before next year. They could buy HTC for a bargain.
  • They need to design their own processors. Qualcomm is dragging their feet and is embarrassing Android. Apple builds their own chips, so do Samsung and Huawei. This will take more time, but is as important as the first point because people aren't going to keep buying a Google phone if it keeps falling farther behind Samsung and Apple in performance.
  • Carrier presence and marketing. We saw a bit of this with the 6P. There was more advertising for that than I can remember seeing for any other Nexus phone. There were Huawei kiosks in the mall showing off the phone. This needs to happen with the Pixel but it needs to be Google's brand, not HTC that is shown.

Honestly, from my limited knowledge, the toughest part for Google might be the marketing aspect. If they have the will to really compete in the mobile phone market they have the technical skills already. They already design and build all their own server hardware for their data centers. The Pixel laptops were the best built laptops that no one bought. The part they have never really been good at is marketing. Samsung and Apple have always been better, and Google will have to really level that up if they want to compete.

Android finally gets a proper comments section on the YouTube app

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 09:30 AM PDT

I just noticed this on my YouTube app. This seems to be a server side update. It was previously available to only a few people. But I just checked it on all my phones and all of them are now showing the likes and dislikes in the comment section.

PSA: Amazon App Store Apps Don't Work On Nougat

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 07:02 PM PDT

Just found out the hard way. While the app lets you buy whatever you want (of course), it can't do whatever DRM authentication it normally does with apps from the store.

This means when you open an Amazon downloaded app, including apps you paid good money for, they will give you a cryptic error message.

I had to contact Amazon support, who advised that while they support "Android 4.1+", they do not support Android 7.0 and have no timetable to do so.

How popular/known is nexus(pixel) series in your region?

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 08:42 AM PDT

I'm from Eastern India and nexus series is pretty much unknown to people unless you are android enthusiasts. General people buy samsung and cheap local and international brands(like xiomi etc.) while those who like decent brand experience with stock android, go for moto devices. Basically a lot of people consider moto phones as the very best of android and completely oblivious to nexus line and the amount custom rom and other development those phones get.

Maybe high pricing is a factor of it not being well known here. So I'm wondering how much are nexus(pixel) phones are known in your region/country?

It would be kinda great if Android's notification system mimicked the way Inbox deals with email.

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 05:20 AM PDT

The improvements in Nougat are a great start, but how about things like

  • Notifications are bundled by type. E.g. 3 from Twitter and 2 from Facebook are bundled, a text and a whatsapp are bundled, but a work email and a personal email are separate because you set them up to always display separately. (fine control over this is important)

  • Tap to open a bundle or an individual notification, swipe away right to mark done, swipe away left to open up a snooze menu

  • Just like inbox you can snooze until time or place, or (as a further improvement) generically set a time of day like "afternoon" and then let Google buzz you again when it can detect that you're not busy. (if they're going to spy on us at least put that to good use!)

  • Certain types of notifications or certain apps can be delayed (again this can all be setup on a case by case basis) - so if you're attractive and want all your instagram notifications to come through as one buzz every two hours instead of constantly you can do that. If you only want work emails in work hours you can do that, etc etc etc
