/r/Android App Store v0.5: now with App Icons, Screenshots, Themes, and a Report System!

Posted: 21 Sep 2016 08:32 PM PDT

11 days ago, we released the first public version of the /r/Android app store. Since then, the developers have been hard at work updating the app to bring some major usability improvements.

Today, the developers are ready to announce version 0.5 of the /r/Android App Store!

Link to GitHub repo. Please report issues there and if you're a developer feel free to contribute.

What's new:

  • New app sections: Android Wear and Reddit Clients

  • Screenshots and app icons pulled from the Play Store listing (if available)

    • You might notice that some apps don't have icons listed. That's because in the app wiki that this app pulls data from, the original developer did not provide a Play Store link to their app at the time. If you find such a case, please report it in this thread!
  • Themes (light/dark/AMOLED)

  • Flagging system (report apps that are broken, or that you believe shouldn't be there)

  • Redesigned details page

  • Performance enhancements and caching

  • Update notification (so you won't have to manually update from github anymore after you install this update)

Leave your feedback below! Thanks again to /u/Multimoon and /u/mDarken for all their hard work!

Justin Uberti ‏@juberti And a special to those who asked for a feature, but understood that Allo v1 is just that: a 1.0 product that will improve every few weeks.

Allo Renewed my Assistant Excitement

Posted: 21 Sep 2016 07:41 PM PDT

While Allo has altogether been a bit of a disappointment, especially with regards to how it handles SMS. It is the first time we've gotten to experience Google Assistant, and it is definitely smart.

A good example of Assistants intelligence happened recently. I was testing it out and thought of a common problem I have: I have trouble falling asleep. I decided to shoot a message to Assistant simply saying "I can't sleep"

Whereas Google now would've just done a search for "I can't sleep", Assistant sent me a YouTube link to Brahman - cradle song saying that "it always puts me in a sleepy mood".

Google is going to bring us the closest we've ever been to an actual conversational AI and I'm excited.

tl:dr: my hype for Allo has been replaced by hype for Assistant
