Questions Thread - September 20, 2016

Posted: 20 Sep 2016 05:07 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

  • How do I pass data between my Activities?
  • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
  • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

PSA: If your app requires GPS hardware to operate properly, you will need to explicitly add the "android.hardware.location.gps" uses-feature to your manifest starting October 15th

Posted: 20 Sep 2016 12:29 PM PDT

I just received this email:

What's changing

We're making a change on October 15th, 2016 that will affect apps targeting API version 21 (Android 5.0, Lollipop) or higher that use ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION but don't explicitly have the "android.hardware.location.gps" uses-feature. Going forward, these apps will be available to install on devices that don't have GPS hardware. In most cases this won't be an issue since Wi-Fi and Cell-ID based location provides high enough fidelity for the typical operation of these apps. However, any apps that require GPS hardware, such as GPS navigators, should explicitly add the "android.hardware.location.gps" uses-feature to their manifest.

If your app requires GPS to function properly and you do not include android.hardware.location.gps in your manifest declaration, your users may have a poor app experience.

Also, if you're using the fused location provider and wish to receive the most accurate location samples from GPS (i.e. with PRIORITY_HIGH_ACCURACY), you must include the "android.hardware.location.gps" feature in your app's manifest to ensure that Google Play only distributes your app to devices with GPS sensors.

You can read more about this change in the Android Developers Help Center.

Regards,

The Google Play Team

New app rejected on Google Play - How long before I can resubmit?

Posted: 20 Sep 2016 04:21 PM PDT

I submitted my first app to Google Play only to have it rejected after 3+ hours of waiting.

It was rejected for "violating the Content Rating Guidelines". Anyway, I've read through the policy and filled out another questionnaire but the "Resubmit App" button is still disabled (says "Processing update" above the button).

Any idea how long I have to wait? I've done everything required to resubmit.

Is Google's "Tap to Translate" feature available for any Android app to implement?

Posted: 20 Sep 2016 05:26 PM PDT

I'm not an Android developer, but have a similar need in my business, where the user can "minimize" the app and then captures what is in the clipboard after it's open again.

Can I do this or is this exclusive to the Google Translate app? Here is the promotional video talking about this feature: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xtEp55MKRE

Customizable notification app?

Posted: 20 Sep 2016 09:20 AM PDT

Hi.

On my home network I have a number of scripts and programs that monitor various things. I'd like to receive a message on my phone if any of the readings are out of the ordinary. Does anyone know of a notification system for Android that can receive (or poll for) messages from a generic source?

I'm fairly competent in computer science, so I'm quite open to all solutions. Ideally I'd like something that can poll a web page or receive a UDP broadcast or something equally simple, since the messages need to be transmitted from a number of platforms.

Does such a thing exist?

Suggestions for other workable solutions (e-mail? SNMP?) are also welcome. :)
