Newbie Asks: What is the Best SMS/Messaging App (Ideally One That Receives Data Through WiFi)

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 09:26 AM PDT

Hey,

My friend (no, really) has a new cell phone (Samsung Grand Prime) and was showing me a problem they've run into.

Their work requires a lot of info to be sent between coworkers. Much of this info is in the form of images, charts, data, etc. They don't have a data plan with their phone and had assumed wifi would be sufficient. It turns out, however, that the built in messaging app doesn't allow data to be received via wifi (at least, neither of us could find a setting for that).

So I assume she'll need an app that allows this. Ideally the app would be easy to use because she's a technophobe. Since I don't even own a cell phone, I have no idea what to recommend.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Is there an app that measures 3G and 4G data use seperatly?

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 02:03 AM PDT

Hi,

I have a contract that allows me 50 gigs a month on 4G, but only 3 gigs a month on 3G. I'm looking for an app that can distinguish between the amount I use over 3g and seperatly over 4g so I can set warnings and cut offs accordingly.

ATM I'm just using the data monitor of the phone for overal limit warnings.

Thanks in advance.

Best/most informative GPS app?

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 05:26 AM PDT

I'll be in LA next week and am looking for a better GPS app. I currently use waze, which is fine for getting around my small town area, but for LA i need more info.

Looking for an app that includes up to date info on traffic, accidents, what lanes to be in, etc. Would also love route selections/filters (ie select to avoid highways, or an option to pick a longer route if it means avoiding traffic).

Not a huge fan of driving as it is, and from what I've heard driving in LA sucks. Trying to make it as hassle free as possible.

Thanks in advance

I'll Make your app For Free!

Posted: 10 Sep 2016 12:24 PM PDT

Hey guys!

My name's Drew. I'm an experienced app developer with more than 10 published apps. (I am also 15 years old, and most of those apps are only used by friends or classmates.) But I want to make something bigger and better!

PM me with app ideas, and I'll choose one to develop and publish for FREE. From there it's yours to advertise and then profit from! (I'm not interested in making any money or percentage, I just want to make something awesome that people will love!)

Can't wait to see what great ideas I'll get! -Drew

(If you want to check me out, here is my latest Android game: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.akware.orange2 and here are my other apps! https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=AKWare )

UPDATE:

Wow, I didn't expect so many suggestions! You guys have tons of great ideas, and I can't decide on one alone!

I'm going to create a list of all the app ideas we have and set up a survey so everyone can vote on their favorites (I'll probably use Google Forms, or some other site.). I'll keep adding new app ideas to the list until around 3pm (EST), and I'll post the survey around 3:30.

Can't wait to see more awesome suggestions! -Drew

Best apps similar to Opera Max

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 08:32 AM PDT

I've recently moved to a rural area after living in the suburbs and with moving came losing internet access as there is no company that offers internet here besides Dial Up and Satellite internet which is way too overpriced and not unlimited. Now my mobile data means more to me than it ever has but luckily I had Opera Max to help my 12GBs last the whole month but this month Opera Max just stopped working and no longer helps save data on YouTube, Instagram, or any other apps so I really need an alternative.

[Request] An app that "formats" text in markdown via highlighted text menu

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 09:55 AM PDT

Formatting words in markdown or hyphenating words can be tricky, as you have to modify spaces and fight with corrections made with your keyboard.

Something can can format text in markdown would be great for apps/sites like Telegram, WhatsApp, Simplenote, Dynalist, etc.

How would it work? You would highlight some text and wait for the menu to appear (should work on marshmallow and above), then tap on the three dots for the extended menu, tap on format, or whatever the apps name is (e.g. Markmat), and then a window with a couple options would appear (bold, italics, hyphenate, hyperlink), one of the options would be tapped, and then the highlighted text would be replaced with the ideally formatted version instead.

Bonus: it would copy the selected text to your clipboard, in case it accidentally gets deleted or messed up.

I hope that makes sense.

App to make texts ring like calls?

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 07:45 AM PDT

I can hear calls when I'm asleep but not texts. I 'd like to have the option of responding if I want to by being able to wake up when the text comes through. Not sure if there's a good app for it. The more configurable the better. If I could have it automatically create an alarm for right now on my alarm clock app that'd be cool too.

Looking for that one progress pics app

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 06:10 AM PDT

A couple months ago someone posted an app that saved your progress pictures. This would be progress pics of your body, and I think it also included a place to record body measurements as well. May or may not have been FOSS.

The name was very similar to Progression, although Progression itself is a (fantastic) workout app. Anyone remember the app? Or can recommend a similar one?

Is there an app that can show me which apps are using my location?

Posted: 11 Sep 2016 01:48 AM PDT

My location is set to high accuracy, and there is an app constantly using it in my status bar. I've tried disabling the location permission on multiple apps under the recent location request heading in location settings, but this hasn't solved it. The only way I have of currently fixing it is restarting my phone or switching Aeroplane mode on and off.

It would be great if there was an app that could track what apps are constantly using my location.

Are there any apps that use the iris scanner on the Galaxy note 7? I reckon an ebook reader that turns pages when you wink would be cool.

[REQUEST] A quick, temporary voice recording and playback app for language learning

Posted: 10 Sep 2016 11:27 PM PDT

I'm learning to speak a new language, and I would like to record myself saying various phrases for immediate playback and comparison with an audio lesson.

I haven't yet found a sound recorder that will allow me to make several recordings in quick succession without either being prompted to save each one, or having to delete a bunch of automatically-saved recordings that I don't intend to keep. Do you know of an Android app appropriate for this workflow?
