Worried about my mother's phone

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 01:24 PM PDT

With the recent news about the Samsung Note 7 catching on fire got me worried about my mom's phone, she has the Samsung Galaxy J7 (SM-J700M). We were talking about the news of the Samsung Note 7 catching on fire and she told me that her phone sometimes shows notifications/warnings of "overheating".

Sorry if this is not the appropriate subreddit but I don't know where else to ask this.

switching from a jailbroken iphone! help finding android equivalent tweaks please!

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 11:28 AM PDT

im looking at switching from my iphone 6plus that is jailbroken and has been since i got it almost two years ago. my phone before that was the 5 (jailbroken) and before that the 4. i really like the pixel xl and was hoping there are some tweaks for android like the ones i use the most often on my iphones. my must have most used tweak is probably activator, which basically allows you to assign a specific action to a specific task. example: three finger pinch opens reddit. also i use springtomize which is like a swiss army knife of changing just about anything youd like about ios. one big feature is hiding apps conpletely and opening them with activator gestures which i cant live without. is there any way this can be recreated on android? ive owned a few androids but the were tablets not phones, origional nexus 7 (rooted and unlocked bootloader) and nvidia shield (was replaced for exploding battery issues) it was kept stock for warrantee issues. anyways im not new to android but ive never owned a primary android device and ive been away from the scene for a little while. any help is greatly appreciated.

edit: also what is the best theming app for android? i remember the main ios one (well it has been replaced now but back then) was released on android, winterboard. is it worth anything or is there better?

Force LG G4 Marshmallow to clear all running apps upon shutdown?

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 12:47 PM PDT

Hi guys! I was wondering how to get my T-Mobile LG G4 to not open the apps I used in a previous session upon startup. What I mean is, say I opened Facebook, Firefox, YouTube, Weather during one session of using the phone, when I turn it off and then back on, it will reopen them in the same order. Do you know a way to disable that, i.e. clear the task manager upon shutdown?

I moved from my Samsung Galaxy S5 KitKat to this phone and I want to manage the G4's RAM in a similar way to how I did with my S5. Thanks in advance!

Battery going to 43% in 21 minutes?

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 12:14 PM PDT

Device: Samsung S3 (d2can/d2att)

OS/Android Version: CM-13.0-20160906-Nightly/Android Version 6.0.1

Carrier: Koodo (Canada)

ROOTED DEVICE

Click this for Battery History Details It went up at the end there because I started charging it btw

So everything was fine until yesterday when by the time I got to work my phone dropped to 65%, I originally thought I just forgot to charge it so I didn't think much of it but today within 21 minutes of me unplugging it it was down to 43% I have no idea why, none of my apps are draining it that much I don't think and I've restarting the device to no avail.

The battery that it's currently using is a "Anker 2200mAh Li-ion Battery" as the old original was holding less charge and was obviously having troubles for how old it was. But I bought that new battery Back in April. I looked it up online but I can't find anyone having problems like me so if anyone could help out it would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Stock messaging app uninstalled?

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 03:57 PM PDT

I have a note 7. I tried out Google Messenger. I used a package Disabler to disable the stock messaging app. I have since deleted Google Messenger but now the stock messaging app is missing. It is not "disabled" in the package Disabler nor the application Manager under settings. Where can u find the apk to reinstall?

Phone won't let me call one specific contact. Stubborn problem! Need help.

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 09:47 AM PDT

I have a Huawei P9 Lite. It's on Marshmallow stock ROM, but it's modified, i.e. rooted, custom recovery (twrp) etc, however I doubt that has anything at all to do with the problem I'm facing. The problem is that there's one specific contact that doesn't behave like all my other contacts, it's literally the only one that acts up. Also, it doesn't seem to be tied to the contact either, it's just the phone number, because I've tried to delete the contact from the phone, resync with google contacts, even deleted it from google contacts and readded it, also it just seems to happen anyway when I manually type the phone number in. It's a bit weird, but I'll try to explain.

When I have stock dialer and stock sms app set as default and using the stock apps I can call the person through the dialer just fine. However, when I'm in the stock default messaging app, pressing the call button in a conversation with said contact, the actual "call in progress" thing pops up for a very brief moment, and then it just goes back to the previous app used, in this case the default messenger app.

If I set a custom dialer and custom messaging app, for instance exDialer and Google's Messenger app as default, when using exDialer and try to call the person by clicking the contact or try to call the number manually, it does nothing, but sometimes if I click it many times in rapid succession it will go to the stock default dialer app with the number already punched in there, but not actually call the person. Again, this happens a few times and sometimes if I'm lucky it will actually call the person after I hit call on that screen it sort of redirects me to, if that makes sense. When calling through Google Messenger, the "call in progress" thing pops up again for a brief moment and just goes back to Google's Messenger app.

I think it might be some weird caching problem or something from a time I called that number the first time. I tried "clear cache" and "clear data" for all the apps I could find related to sms/messaging/phone/dialer apps and system services, but it did not help. Also tried to clear dalvik/art cache and cache in twrp.

Have you experienced the same thing, if so please help me. This is driving me nuts, because of course the contact/phone number that is affected is the person I call the most. I don't feel like reflashing. As a matter of fact, I actually did a stock ROM upgrade to solve a semi-brick when fiddling around a bit, but admittedly that wasn't a 100% clean ROM re-flash, so maybe some settings/cache somewhere were left behind, messing up my day.

EDIT: I could of course live with not calling this person through the messaging app, since it works fine when using stock dialer, but the stock sms/dialer app on P9 Lite is seriously ugly, which is why I want to use custom dialer (exDialer) and sms app (Google's Messenger app), and when using those, it won't let me call through either exDialer or Google's Messenger app, so I'm kinda forced to use the ugly stock apps. Another reason I want to use exDialer is because TeslaUnread doesn't work with the stock dialer.

Root Verizon Galaxy

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 03:42 PM PDT

So after having done lots of research, there doesn't seem to be any way of rooting SM-G900V or SM-G928V, which are my options of phones (galaxy s5 and s6 edge plus).

However, if I unlock the bootloader, thus tripping Knox, will that give me the ability to root either phone? And if so, what method of root would work?

Grandma phone

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 03:24 PM PDT

I'm going to be helping my tech-challenged grandma set up and learn her new Android phone. She got it under the Lifeline Assistance "Obama Phone" Program, so I'm expecting a really budget phone with jellybean and limited storage. I was wondering if anyone has had experience setting up phones for elderly users, and if you have any tips or advice. I want to make the process as simple and strait-forward as possible.

Nougat breaks onhub connection(x-post from /r/OnHub)

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 11:38 AM PDT

So I'm on Nougat now and I've just found out that it breaks the connection with my OnHub router. On MM I would have to switch to airplane mode and then turn wifi on. This was because on MM if the internet was out it would automatically switch to cellular as a convenience. I was fine with this because it was actually convenient when I was walking around town. But now with Nougat something has changed and I can't even directly connect when I try to force it like that.

So anyways I noticed this problem this morning when my internet went out and the modem was seemingly OK. Tried to connect to the router, but it refused. I had to actually fully reset both my modem and router just to get wifi again. I then tested offline connectivity to the onhub after all this and I still can't connect. How the hell could Google not see this? How the hell am I supposed to setup bridge mode now? Do I need to get an iPhone just to use my GOOGLE router? Just...just...what? This is absolutely insane!

I'm going to setup an Android emulator on both my laptop and desktop in hopes that that's a good enough solution for now. Then I am going to try to setup some sort of Tasker profile to force my phone to connect. I don't want to but I might have to go back to Marshmallow.

Considering switching to Android from iOS, but worried about reliability.

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 03:20 PM PDT

Hi everyone,

I'm a long time iPhone user and really like the reliability of the phone. You turn it on and it works. Both my iPhones that I've used have lasted two years and the only reason I bought a new one is due to the battery dying out. I don't like that with iPhone's you are in Apple's paywall and are forced to buy everything apple from chargers and other accessories. Now with the iPhone 7 being released and it not having a headphone jack I'm very fed up with Apple.

I'm due up for a new phone and can't decide what to do. I like the reliability of the iPhone, but am wondering if there is a similar reliable Android phone out there. I know that Android has better hardware specs and features, but my main concern is reliability. I want a phone that will last me 2 years and won't break that has non-buggy operating system.

So for my questions about Android: 1.) How is the hardware reliability with Android phones? (My family have had Samsung Galaxy S3/S4's and they always seemed to be having hardware problems with the battery, or the screen)

2.) How is the software reliability of Android? (I had a Samsung Note tablet before and it would crash all the time so I sold it)

3.) Have you noticed a difference in the O.S. with the Samsung Galaxy vs Google Nexus? Or are they really similar?

Thanks for reading my post!

Gmail vibration notification won't turn off.

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 02:28 PM PDT

S7 edge user:

In the notification settings for Gmail I have it set to sound only, vibrate is unchecked. However my phone vibrates when I keep my phone on vibrate when I receive a Gmail notification. It's come to the point that it's so annoying, as I keep thinking its a text msg, I stopped looking my notifications and missing important (timely) texts. Same goes for bloody YouTube as there no specific option to stop vibrate notifications.

Pls help. I really don't want to install a third party notification handler (I don't know even where to start), but I guess I will have too.

Which companies modify the android OS for their own phones?

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 01:39 PM PDT

And what are their key features?

I know Samsung basically has their own OS, but I don't know anything beyond that. HTC has HTC Sense, but I am not sure what it adds aside from different emojis. LG also has their own set of excellent emojis, but again, that is all I know. Help?

Deleting content from a boot-looping LG G4?

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 01:35 PM PDT

Hi all, I have an LG G4 that went into boot loop. Seller offered to take the phone back for a full refund, but I have a major concern - I assume the seller would try to get it fixed and sell it as refurbished. That means that somewhere along the process, a technician (or technicians) and other people will have a working phone with my personal information on it.

I'm ok with losing the data on the phone forever... is there a way to restrict access / wipe the data even though the phone is boot looping? I was hoping maybe there's a way to remotely do it via the web (so whenever the phone is working again, the phone won't be able to connect to my accounts and that the data would be wiped).

Trying to get it in boot mood (power + volume down) did not work.

Thanks for your help!

Issue with Google Play Services after updating Firmware

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 01:02 PM PDT

Hello!

So i recently updated the firmware on my Samsung Note 4 (SM-N910T) from 5.0.1 to 6.0.1, and that part works and everything, but the Google Play Services won't open, i think cause they're for 5.0.1, so i cant update/install all my apps.

I tried going to the play store on Opera mini browser on the phone to see if it would update, but it merely said it was installed, with no manual update button.

I tried just deleting all the google play apps, and running a new apk, and it prompts me to update the play services, but when i try to, it just says app not installed.

Meanwhile, every 2-5 seconds, I get a "Unfortunately, Google Play Services has stopped." error message, so i know at least part of it is still on the phone.

so yeah any help would be appreciated!

Deleted a bunch of photos last night on my GS4 Active. While deleting, it said "backing up" and then "backup complete." Does anyone have any idea where exactly this backed my photos up to?

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 12:48 PM PDT

This may be obvious but I can't find the photos anywhere. I thought it was backing them up to Google Photos but that only has pictures I've taken, not my screenshots, downloads, etc.

Any advice? I'd really like to access my pictures.
