[Beta] The first public release of the /r/Android App Store is available for testing!

Posted: 10 Sep 2016 04:30 PM PDT

If you haven't yet read the previous sticky thread, we recently sent out a call for help to create an app store to showcase Redditor-made Android apps.

Many of you replied pledging your support in various ways, and we greatly appreciate all of the help, but /u/multimoon and /u/mDarken took the initiative and quickly began working on getting a working build of an app store in place. Rather than fragment the work between different developers, we decided to go with the work started by these two.

After a couple of internal test builds shared with the mods (mostly in order to fix the wiki page itself, as it wasn't consistent enough to pull data into the app), we're now ready to release the first public version of the /r/Android App Store!

Now I know that the "app store" name is a bit confusing, since we aren't actually hosting any of the apps here. This app is basically a much neater front for the app wiki that we maintain. All of the apps are actually hosted on the Play Store. The purpose of the /r/Android App Store is to showcase and support apps made by Redditors.

You can download the latest public release here. Here's a direct link to the APK.

Edit: here are some screenshots http://imgur.com/a/SpnJv

The app is totally free (as in, no ads) and open-source. It's mostly functional at this point, but there are a few things the developers want to note:

  • This is a preview and may contain a bug or two

  • You are encouraged to contribute to the project if you know any amount of development: https://github.com/d4rken/reddit-android-appstore/

  • Report bugs at: https://github.com/d4rken/reddit-android-appstore/issues

  • Screenshots are planned to be included within each app's description. These will be pulled from the Play Store page for each app when you click on the app for more details.

  • App icons are planned to be added. These will be pulled from the Play Store and will be stored in cache.

Otherwise, all feedback is welcome in the comments below.

Again, major thanks to /u/multimoon and /u/mDarken (both of whom themselves have apps listed in the Play Store, so check them out!)

As a software engineer who likes both iPhone and Android, I just want to say that I'm deeply impressed by this sub.

Posted: 10 Sep 2016 04:25 AM PDT

I like both Android and iOS, with a personal preference toward iOS. After the recent Apple keynote I was pretty excited about some of the new tech Apple announced with their new device, so I was trying to see what Reddit thought (or you can call this my mistake number 1)

But you all know what happened. The rest of the Reddit was of course taken over by the headphone jack controversy, and you can't have a single meaningful discussion without some kid trying to tell me how the iPhone 7 is a mid-tiered phone that's slower than 3 year old Android devices.

This sub, on the other hand, was one exception. The overall atmosphere was positive and I saw many good, meaningful discussions (I even saw people defending the Apple AirPods!!!). I sometimes play devil's advocates on Reddit when I'm bored, and this sub, along with /r/teslamotors, are actually two places that I find to be really, really good at keeping a conversation constructive and civilized.

Sorry for the pointless post, just wanted to share my appreciation of you guys. I'm looking forward to learn more from everyone. Cheers :)

EDIT: Took out the link to the other comment, it was not my intention to brigade anyone.

[reference guide] A basic guide to SoC GPU´s

Posted: 10 Sep 2016 12:49 PM PDT

Lets see, After the A9 and A10 performance and everyone complaining that qualcomm sucks, as well as considering the news that Samsung is looking in to a new GPU solution from Nvidia or ATI i thought a guide to the GPU´s currently avaiable for ARM SoC´s would be nice for reference.

So lets look at the main players, i know theres more then the big 3 +1 like broadcom with its videocore but this guide is just for mainstream devices, So you development board lovers can put as many pins in to my voodoo doll as you like.

Arm Mali
Mali is the Vanilla of the arm GPU world, it was developed by arm itself and its licensed in the same way they license the main soc designs, It does not mean its bad, actually one of the most powerful Arm SoC´s found on a Android device right now is powered by a Mali solution, The Exynos 8890 uses a Mali 880 GPU. the benefit behind solutions from mali is their ease of implementation and their modular design, allowing the SoC producer to select the speeds and the core configuration which also brings some issues which we will discuss later in this essey.

Qualcom Adreno
Originaly developed by AMD/ATI and then sold off to Qualcomm, this GPU is exclusive to Qualcomm Snapdragon devices, the 530 is currently the 2nd fastest GPU on the market and they tend to be some of the best GPU´s you can find on a SoC, Theres not much you can say about them, But atleast what you see is what you get.

Imagination PowerVR
PowerVR has a long and interesting history, It started with the birth of proper 3D acceleration on PC´s, each company coming out with its own solutoion, the Nividia Riva, the 3DFX Voodoo, the Renidition Verite... and the NEC PowerVR PCX1 and 2, Unfortunatly 3Dfx and Nvidia controlled that market in the end and PowerVR survived for a while making GPU´s for set up boxes (and most notably the Sega Dreamcast) NEC sold the powerVR deptartment to STMicro, which tried to make a PC comeback with the Kyro GPU, but it lacked T&L and failed.

Later sold to Imagination technologies which developed the Series 5, AKA the PowerVR 500 series, Now the PowerVR 540 series became VERY popular among SoC developers and it was present on many android devices, but its popularity dropped with time as manufacturers moved to the cheaper Mali solution from ARM. PowerVR continues to power the GPU for the Iphone and currently makes the most powerful on SoC GPU on the market, but implementation issues, high cost and source code and driver release issue has kept many android developers away from power VR, The last notable use of a PowerVR GPU in an mainstream android directed SoC was the Helio X10 from Mediatek (no, i dont consider a econo solution from Rockchip for TV boxes a mainstream SoC).

Nvidia Tegra
The beast... Nvidia has several ventures in to the Android SoC market, its original Tegra and Tegra 2 were used in some devices, Toshiba tablets, a phone or two, the Tegra 3 was the peak when it was used for several phones and tables, most notably the HTC one X (only outside the US, the US version had a Snapdragon due to the Nvidia modem lacking LTE), the Tegra 4 found a few uses in devices like the madcatz Mojo came console or phones from the french OEM Wiko but not much success there, The newer K1 and X1 arent exactly phone friendly but apart from a battery issue they are very good tablet oriented chipsets, the thing is that the power requirements and the lack of a proper modem kind of keep them outside the cellphone makret.

Now that we know our competitors lets look at some numers from popular socs around the market. These figures are in raw perfromace in Gflops. the A9 was included but i have yet to see what GPU configuration the A10 have so i cant provide numbers for it, i suspect its a PowerVR GT7600XT Plus which can easly surpass the Adreno 530 by 50% or more with numbers around the 700Gflops in its full 12 core configuration at maximum frequency.

High end
- Snapdragon 820 (Adreno 530) : 407.4 Gflops
- Samsung Exynos 8890 (Mali T880) : 265.2 Gflops
- Mediatek Helio X20 (Mali T880) : 115,6 Glops
- Huawei (HiSilicon) Kirin 955 (Mali T880) : 122.4Gflops
- Apple A9 (PowerVR GT7600XT) : 250Gflops

Now many of you must be asking yourself... Whats with the Mediatek, Huawei and Samsung SoC´s, they all have the same GPU but its giving different numbers for each.

Well, this is where the modular nature of the Mali GPU comes in to the discussion, When you look at the GPU on of them it shows MALI-Txzz MPy,

The X being the generation
The Z being the step in that generation
and the Y being the number of cores used.

So lets compare the Kirin 955 to the Eynos 8890.
The Exynos 8890 has a T880 MP12 running at 650 Mhz with each core pushing around 22.1Gflops but making up for it with 12 cores sharing the load.
The Kirin 955 on the other hand has a T880 MP4 running at 900Mhz, Hisilicon decided to use less cores at a higher frequency, so each core is pumping out 30.6Gflips a sec but the load is distributed over only 4 cores,

One can argue for one design or the other but i think its fundamental to know the core configuration of mali GPU´s to make an informed selection between GPU´s found on SoC´s today.

Another good example is the Mediatek MT6582 and MT6580, the MT6582 is a low end competitor to the snapdragon 400 from mediatek from 2013/4 that was found on many chinese phones, Mediatek rescued it and retooled as a economy soc for low end phones as the MT6580, but at the same time removed one of the cores on the Mali450 GPU on it basicaly halfing graphical performance.

I would guess that Arm licences Mali GPU´s by the core so the 4 core Mali 880 configuration found on the HiSilicon Kirin 955 and Mediatek X20 is much cheaper to implement compared to the 12 core configuration Samsung uses.

As for the MT6580... its designed to go in to devices in the sub 80 buck market (i´ve actually seen sub 60 dollar devices with it) so i cant blame them for cutting fat wherever they can find it.

Well, I hope this guide has been usful and excuse some spelling since english isnt my first language and remember that i did this free of charge so dont bark at me too loud of i made some mistake, but i do appreciate corrections.

I'm blown away: LG G5's wide angle camera is something else...

I took this photo today in Helsinki City Center. A woman was offering people to make soap water bubbles with a string loop thingy and the kids were loving it :)

I took the photo in a spontaneous snap-it mood and didn't think that it would turn out good...Boy I was wrong!

Wow. G5's wide angle camera is amazing! It's only 8 megapixels and so the photos don't like to be zoomed in but the story you can tell with a wide angle shot is something special... Just look at the joy on the boy's face <3

I love my 2 month old G5 even more now! Thank you LG, I know that the G5 is not very appreciated in the Android community but I surely appreciate the heck out of it! :)

Will advertising-subsidized Android phones continue to grow?

Posted: 10 Sep 2016 12:24 PM PDT

The top-selling phones on Amazon.com are the Moto G4 and the Blu R1 HD, both subsidized by $50 through a lockscreen ad / preloaded applications / occassional notifications.

I have the Blu R1 HD (16 GB model), and it's a solid phone. Plus, it's received multiple security updates. I'd imagine Amazon is putting pressure on Blu (and Motorola / Lenovo too) to keep these phones up to date.

Do you think this model will expand even more?
