There's too many popular apps that are abusing notifications.

Posted: 23 Sep 2016 10:36 AM PDT

The 2 I frequently get pissed off by are Tumblr and Imgur. I rarely use either of the apps, but both of them basically send me a notification once a day for no reason other than to just tell me to open the app.

This is specifically something Google says not to do in the Material design guidelines:

Notifications should not be the primary communication channel with your users, as frequent interruptions may cause irritation. The following cases do not warrant notification:

  • Messages that encourage the user to return to an app, but provide no direct value, such as "Haven't seen you in a while"

Source

This is EXACTLY what Imgur, Tumblr, and I'm sure many other apps do. We need to start reporting these apps or something. I know I can disable notifications manually, but

  1. I shouldn't have to
  2. Sometimes I want certain notifications. I rarely use Tumblr, but if I make a post and someone replies to it, I want a notification in that case. And if I disable notifications for the app entirely, I can't get them.

Tip: On Allo, tap on the "Start Incognito Chat" to see who has Allo downloaded.

Posted: 22 Sep 2016 06:15 PM PDT

I realized I couldn't tell who exactly has Allo as all your contacts are grouped together in the contact list. But if you tap on the incognito chat, you'll see who else has Allo without spamming them with the download allo link.

On why RCS is not the answer yet for the Android messaging problem

Posted: 23 Sep 2016 07:27 AM PDT

From the 3 US carriers listed in Wikipedia only two of them have accreditation by the GSMA to use the branded RCS system (Joyn), furthermore none of them use Jibe (Google's RCS system).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Communication_Services

RCS was created for the carriers, this is what the FAQ says about monetization and incentives for carriers to use RCS.

How can operators monetize RCS-based services? Additional fees or data charging?

There are many ways in which RCS based services can be monetised: charging customers per event for certain services, bundling services into daily, weekly or monthly subscription packages or charging explicitly for data volumes consumed. In some cases, third-party service providers could be charged for the use of rich communications capabilities, e.g. video share or file share in the delivery of their specific services, such as in gaming apps or to enrich customer care services.

Dieter Bohn put it into nice words in this article

But the thing about RCS is that, like SMS, it's a standard designed by and for carriers. That's meant that it has had a long, winding, and fraught road to launching — and even if it finally starts to see wide adoption there's no guarantee the carriers won't muck it up with high prices or competing, incompatible features.

http://www.theverge.com/2016/6/1/11833566/google-messaging-app-allo-rcs-android-code-conference

At the end, RCS is way too far for being a viable option for Android or any mobile OS for that matter and everyone is hyping it as the holy grail which is not! Because is going to be controlled by the carriers, I just imagine what things Verizon has under their sleeve for RCS...

Have you noticed that Chrome does not have as many image context menu options anymore?

Posted: 23 Sep 2016 12:59 PM PDT

This, is what the old context menu looked like when you would long press on an image.

And this is what it looks like now.

I just noticed that they don't allow you to open the image in the current tab, quickly copy image URL or copy image, which you can paste into Gmail or some other app.

I think these options were very useful, the new Share menu is OK, but it does not have an option of copying image URL to clipboard. Do you miss any of this features?

Best Note 7 MODs ( V4A, Xposed, 3imit…)

Posted: 23 Sep 2016 08:16 AM PDT

Before exchanging your Note 7, write down the card number & pin to anything stored on your Samsung Pay app as it is not stored in your Samsung account

Posted: 23 Sep 2016 11:40 AM PDT

This includes debit/credit cards, membership cards, and most importantly, gift cards. I ran into the unpleasant surprise in losing the entire value of a gift card I loaded on the Samsung Pay app. Unlike Android Pay, Samsung Pay (unless purchased directly from Samsung) does not store gift card information on their cloud. Samsung will not compensate you in anyway for this inconvenience.

When I arrived to my local Sprint store for the exchange, they said as long as I have a Samsung & Google account, all sensitive information will be returned once I log into each account. This applies to everything BUT Samsung Pay which was not explained to me.

This is a heads-up so you do not run into the same situation as me.
