Sunday Rant/Rage (Aug 28 2016) - Your weekly complaint thread!

Posted: 28 Aug 2016 04:02 AM PDT

Note 1. Join our Discord, IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

  • Your device.

  • Your carrier.

  • Your device's manufacturer.

  • An app

  • Any other company

Rules

1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

Now is Allo's best chance

Posted: 28 Aug 2016 12:20 PM PDT

With all this controversy surrounding WhatsApp and its new Facebook b.s. this is the perfect chance for Allo to swoop in and be like "I got you."

I mean... Sure it shares all your info with Google, but people have very arbitrary opinions on privacy and Facebook is apparently the devil.

Verizon Conceals DT Ignite in HTC 10 Update

Posted: 28 Aug 2016 06:06 AM PDT

Digital Turbine (DT) Ignite is a Verizon app that manages additional bloatware on your branded phone. The carrier received a significant amount of flak for it in spring 2016, ultimately issuing a statement for its defense. The good news is that DT Ignite could easily be disabled, including the HTC 10 via App manager.

Last week, Verizon updated the HTC 10 from 1.19 to 1.82. They also concealed DT Ignite from App manager. I noticed this when, after the first full-day post-update it had a 2% battery drain.

Correctly assuming the update enabled the app again, I returned to App manager to disable it, but I couldn't find it under All apps or even Disabled.

Thankfully, as the old saying goes, "There's an app for that." Sickle Technologies created a program that prompts for the Disable screen, confirming that with the update, Verizon enabled DT Ignite and hid it from users.

Do yourself a favour, buy/donate to the apps you care about

Posted: 28 Aug 2016 12:14 PM PDT

Last year i was just ok. I had QuickPic, ES File Explorer and Pushbullet and them were the best until the developers needed money.

After years giving stuff for free, they just made a questionable choice that ruined the userbase (they obviously needed money to live, i'm not discussing this).

Now we still have many great apps on the Play Store:

  • paid apps that nobody cares about because they are "too expensive". Apps like Solid Explorer and Join.

  • free apps that are getting better and better that don't have ads but nobody wants to donate because they are free. Apps like Piktures, Metal for Facebook and Chronus.

So, if you don't want to feel lost one more time having to search a good replacement, do yourself a favor, buy/donate to the apps that you love.

If they will ever be updated with bloatware, you'll regret that you haven't done this before.
