ELI5: Why did manufacturers start putting custom UI on Android

I didn't really follow the Android scene at the inception of the OS and this has always bugged me.

Why did manufacturers like HTC start putting custom launchers on top of Android?

Computer makers don't add custom UI to Windows computers? They might add apps/bloatware but never really change the UI.

Just wondering how/why this started to become normal practice.

EDIT; Thanks everyone for your answers. Great insight here. I personally love minimalist design so stock Android(or Nexus UI it would appear) is perfect for me but can see why others prefer other launchers.

full disclosure: I've been working for Slant for nearly 2 months

Slant is a dynamic "best of" website which consumers can use to compare products in an unbiased environment, with suggestions from real people. Electronics was the next logical step (development and gaming are the two largest communities), and that's why they hired me on to help jumpstart their Electronics community (more on that later if you're interested). I've been working with the community, and now I think we're ready to introduce the Electronics community to /r/Android! Here's what we've got so far:

Android Phones

Phones (general)

Tablets

Smartwatches

This is an open invitation to check out our site - to add or edit options/pros/cons/recommend anything (these actions require an account such as Google, Facebook, or you can create a Slant specific account), or you can always lurk. We have other Android related stuff which you can find under the Android tag including apps, gaming, hardware, development and more. A year ago you guys really liked the Android games without IAPs from our Android Gaming community.

How Slant works: Slant takes everyday questions like "What are the best unlocked Android phones" and breaks it down into different products that apply to that question. Then, each product (or option) is then broken down into pros and cons, and we leave it to the community to vote on both the products as well as pros and cons. This helps to keep good stuff floating to the top.

A bit about myself for those of you who are interested - 3 years ago I started to help moderate /r/PickAnAndroidForMe, and with some help from you guys here at r/Android I re-organized the PAAFM WIKI earlier this year. As far as /r/Android goes, I'm mostly a lurker although I have created a couple megathreads (OnePlus 2 and HTC 10) in the past. I also was part of the /r/Android moderation team last summer before college, but couldn't keep up with it once school started (those guys all work too hard to keep this sub great).

If you guys have any questions or suggestions for the site (or myself), that would be great! We love the opportunity to make our site better and to engage with users.

Snapdragon 810 vs 650 heat test

Using a Z5 Premium and Xperia X.

Not very scientific, but ran Antutu 3 times and measured two points on the phone at certain points. Left the phones to cool down before, but as X is my current phone it wasn't left as long.

Basic results: 810 lost over 10% performance by the 3rd test. Max temp 44C 650 has no noticeable change in performance, max of 30.8C

Last test put both results close to 80,000

[DEV] Burstle - relaxing casual game exclusive to Android, made by solo dev

Hi /r/android!

I have recently been told that I should make a proper post about Burstle, rather than just posting in the weekly APPreciation threads.

So what's so great about Burstle? It's ideal for the person who only has a few minutes (perfect toilet game) or possibly a few hours (makes commuting less soul-crushing) to spare.

So how do you play it? The basic premise is simple: you have a queue of coloured tiles which you must keep organised in a grid such that you make chains of the same colour. Once you have at least three tiles of the same colour touching you can burst them to score points. Bigger chains = bigger scores! The real test of Burstle is space management and having the foresight to see which tiles are coming.

So where's the difficulty? Straight off the bat, there are 4 difficulty levels. As you play through the game you will find that some levels have special tiles. Wall tiles prevent you from placing a colour there so you have to be really clever about working around them. Rare wildcard tiles don't reveal their true colours until you place them - damage limitation is the order of the day here!

So what else is there to know? There are a number of powerups to unlock and use. Bombs destroy all tiles touching them regardless of colour. Sniper strikes seek out and destroy all tiles of the colour you choose. There are others to discover as you play. I also implemented a trophy system to reward you as you conquer Burstle's numerous difficulties, as well as light/dark themes and a number of colour schemes and grid shapes to mix it up as you play!

There are ads unfortunately but these can be removed incredibly cheaply if you want to by purchasing the coin doubler in the store or just purchasing some coins. The cheapest set of coins you can buy is less than £1 so it's as cheap or cheaper than the traditional 'remove ads' option most apps give you.

Please try Burstle and let me know what you think of it! Positive or negative I don't mind at all, I've acted on numerous bits of constructive criticism I've received to shape Burstle into the game it is today!

It's currently sitting at just under 500 downloads so I'd absolutely love it if you guys could break that barrier for me! Feedback on the Play Store has been exceptional at 4.94/5 for over 30 ratings (mostly Reddit users).
