Posted: 23 May 2016 06:27 AM PDT As a designer I'm interested of widget usage. I found this (old) post where HTC claims that people don't use widgets: http://www.imore.com/htc-learns-2013-what-apple-knew-back-2007-widgets-arent-widely-used I'm a bit confused because I know many people who use widgets. So, do Android users use widgets or not? I guess widgets are mainly for power users than casual non-tech-savvy users? What do you think? [link] [comments]

Posted: 23 May 2016 08:04 AM PDT Hey guys, I am back :P So, the Moto G4 Plus went on sale in India late last week. Motorola is selling the handset in two variants here: 2GB RAM and 3GB RAM. The former is priced at Rs. 13,499 (~$205), while the 3GB RAM variant sells for Rs. 14,990 (~$230). The costliest variant of the Redmi Note 3 with 3GB RAM sells for Rs. 13,000 in India ($200). RN3 has been a huge hit in India, and Xiaomi has sold 600k units in only 2 months. The phone goes on flash sale once every week, otherwise I imagine this number would be significantly higher. Anyways, back to the topic: I have the 3GB RAM variant of the Moto G4 Plus with me, so if you have any questions about it, ask away. My thoughts so far: 1) The G4 Plus does not feel as premium as the Redmi Note 3 since it does not feature a metal build quality. It does feel sleeker though. 2) The front facing speaker is nothing to write about, but since it is front facing, it is vastly better than what you will find in other phones in this price range. 3) The camera looks good. Vastly better than the Redmi Note 3, though I am yet to use it extensively. 4) Snapdragon 617 chipset: In normal usage, the phone does not heat up or has any performance issues. It even manages to play heavy games like Asphalt 8 at full settings without any issues, which surprised me the most. However, more than 15 mins of gaming is not possible on the phone due to heating issues. After that, the phone got warm and the throttling led to a drop in frame rates making games like Asphalt 8 unplayable. 5) 3GB RAM means multitasking is not an issue on this phone. 6) This phone runs on a near-stock build of Android, but for some reason, Lenovo has made some weird modifications. Like the caller screen is not blue, but green. On the positive side, you do get the option to tweak the display color balance. Surprisingly, the double press power button to launch camera app shortcut is also present on the phone, and so is the twist the phone like a screwdriver gesture. 7) With 10% battery left, the phone charged to 94% in only 1 hour and 12 mins with the supplied Turbo Charger. Battery life has been great as well. I ended the day yesterday with almost 4 hours of screen on time and 2 hours of voice calls. 8) I HATE the power button. Too damn stiff. And the volume buttons are terrible as well. The fingerprint scanner, thankfully, is accurate and fast, so I don't have to use the power button much. 9) Moto Display is still present on the phone. I though Motorola deprecated that? That's it for now. Some (poorly shot) photos of the phone can be found here: http://imgur.com/a/cGM7N [link] [comments]

I bought a Moto E 2015 yesterday and I'm pleasantly surprised! Posted: 23 May 2016 06:40 AM PDT I went into Best Buy yesterday to see if they had any dash cams worth while, and while I was walking though the store I saw a Boost Mobile display with a $35 Moto E. I opted to buy the phone and try to use it as a dash cam solely for the price, because I can get much more functionality of the phone in my car than I could just a dash cam. So, I got home, unlocked the bootloader and got rid of the ghastly Boost Mobile rom that wouldn't stop redirecting me to the browser to activate the device, flashed the latest CM13 nightly and now it's flying. I backed up my apps using Titanium from my Nexus 6 and restored majority of them to give me a pretty similar experience, and everything I run on my N6 runs fairly well on the Moto E. I'm surprised. It's surprisingly functional and for majority of the day yesterday I used it over my N6 to get a feel for it, but after switching back to my N6, the size blew me away! I forgot how big the phone I've been using every day for a year and a half actually is. Using the Moto E shows me that you don't actually have to spend a premium for a flagship phone to get the functionality you need a lot of the time. For $35 I'm pretty damn happy! I opted to sign up for the $30 Boost plan, with 2gb of data and unlimited call and text. It's perfect for an in car phone to use as a display since my car doesn't have anything like Android Auto. Boost also has great reception in Southern CT where I am, and I get roughly 25mbs down, and for a prepaid carrier that's great. VZW on my N6 only gets around 15-20 down in my area, but if I venture to the north a bit I actually get much faster speeds, around 45-50mbs. I'd highly recommend the Moto E for anyone looking for a cheap but functional smartphone. [link] [comments] |
