Posted: 27 May 2016 10:43 AM PDT Many of you are probably already familiar with these bugs, but I find it concerning how Google lets massive battery-draining bugs that receive hundreds of user complaints going unfixed for such a long amount of time. I'm just going to touch on the three biggest ones here:
This is by no means an exhaustive list, these are just the most conspicuous bugs. So why am I writing all this out? Because Google finally seems to want to fix the battery life in Android, but they're still dragging their feet in fixing one of the biggest problems with the OS: That they often ignore major bugs that diminish the user-experience and the usability of the phone for months, and in the case of the MRA bug, years at a time. But this isn't consistent -- they'll often assign and comment on new bugs immediately, even seemingly small ones reported only by one person, yet these monster bugs that are amongst the all time highest-starred in the issue tracker go unaddressed. Doze and App Standby are heavy-handed methods to address the low-hanging fruit. They certainly help, and I'm glad to have them, but I would rather have an OS where the developers take bugs of this magnitude more seriously. I'm a developer and I understand that these things can be extremely complex and take time, but the least Google could do is have a better communication dialog to the hordes of Android fans who are tired of dealing with this. For those of you who agree with these sentiments or are experiencing these bugs, what can be done to more effectively communicate these frustrations to Google? [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 May 2016 07:56 AM PDT Hi Reddit, I would like to present the app I am currently developing with other of my colleagues at DJiT: a music player for YouTube called Stream. What kind of app Stream is? It is a music player for YouTube designed for multi-tasking and developed by music lovers. It plays YouTube videos in a little floating popup that lets you read your emails or browse your favorite subreddit while watching the video clip =) How much does it cost? The application is 100% free. There is no paid features. There are some ads within the app though ~ Do not hesitate to tell me if you find them too intrusive. What makes this app different from other popup player:
Bonus features
What permissions does it require and why?
What's next? The application is still in early development. There is still a long way to a complete YouTube player, but thanks to our early adopters we keep adding new features. In a near future you can expect:
What's NOT next? You will never be able to download the music or have some sort of offline mode :( Why? Simply because YouTube's terms of use forbid it. The only way for us to add theses two features would be a change in the YouTube's terms of use, but we do not really count on that~ As mentioned in the title, I would be very happy if you could tell me what you thing about the app. Is there something that is missing? Is there a specific feature that you want to see in Stream? Please feel free to give me all your remarks, criticisms and suggestions =) I hope you will enjoy this app as much as I do! [Edit] About the lock screen: YouTube's terms of service prevent an app from playing a video without actually showing the video. Since a lot of our users wanted to play the video with their screen lock, we worked hard to find a solution. We ended up with a custom lock screen that displays the video and lets you have some control over the playback. This lock screen is not intrusive, it does not replace the lock screen of the system. Pressing the power button of your phone will still activate the system lock screen =) Here is a screenshot of the "lock screen" with the actions expanded [Edit²] OK reddit, it's very late here (almost 2 AM) I wasn't expecting such an enthusiasm around the app, that's so cool that so many of you took the time to test the app and give me their thought. A big big, like very big, "thank you" to all of you! You made my day and my night. I already have a tons of idea for the future of Stream, and I can't wait to implement all the features you asked for. But right now my body is like 0% battery left. Be sure that I will continue to read and respond to your messages tomorrow. Have a good night/day! Love ♥ [link] [comments]

This bugs me more than it should Posted: 27 May 2016 10:01 AM PDT Google's own material design guidelines found here https://www.google.com/design/spec/motion/movement.html#movement-movement-within-screen-bounds importantly i want to mention just this part: https://gfycat.com/AbsoluteDefiniteEstuarinecrocodile nice animation, meanwhile in the google play app.. things go like this: https://gfycat.com/SeparateArtisticBrontosaurus i just want some consistency... LPT: check your permissions for Google Opinion Rewards Posted: 27 May 2016 02:58 PM PDT In Marshmallow apps don't request permissions until they need them. Unfortunately this means that an app like Rewards just doesn't work unless you go in the settings and grant the permissions. So if you aren't getting surveys check your permissions. Posted: 26 May 2016 11:25 PM PDT Pic of what I had before (left, Parrot Asteroid Smart) and the Erisin unit now (right): http://i.imgur.com/zLX6SUC.jpg Video of it in action: https://youtu.be/wr06a6XvaUI I'd been waiting months for an Android Auto unit to be released by Parrot, but they silently removed all trace of their RNB6 model which would have been the one I bought. I then looked at these much talked about Chinese OEM clone units running Android 4.4.4, and realised that they are actually very good, but lack the sound quality of a high end head unit such as the Parrot, or something from Pioneer. Google I/O was the decider for me, when it came out that the Android Auto app would soon work on all devices, so no longer was there a need to have an Auto head unit. I bought the Erisin from eBay and installed it 2 days ago. Root was very easy, a simple password in the settings, I then updated BusyBox and installed Viper4Android FX which greatly improved the sound quality through my favorite music player (GoneMAD). It now sounds as good as the Parrot did I'd say. My main reason for upgrading from the Asteroid was because the latest apps don't work on Android 2.3, and there's been no major OS update on that unit for ages. I'm now enjoying the new Waze, Maps and other apps and it all looks like an OEM install. It's also a fast unit which doesn't feel much different to a modern Android phone. For anyone else considering these cheap Chinese units, I can definitely recommend them. You do need to faff about with tweaking and customising them, but once it's done you will be very happy I'm sure. XDA has a large support community for the Android 4.4 units too, so custom ROMs are also available as well as Xposed modules. On my unit I installed Nova Launcher and switched to the night mode. Because Erisin use a stock SystemUI for the most part, everything looks professional an doesn't disrupt the flow of the cabin when the screen is on. Oh also, 128GB+USB sticks work formatted as FAF32, the SD card slots take 32GB cards for a total of 64GB. I'll also have a data dongle connected to the rear USB port so I can use it for app updates, navigation and general browsing, then switch to my phone's hotspot when I need to use heavy data. Does anybody think "Do Not Disturb" mode should include a straight to voicemail setting? Posted: 27 May 2016 04:05 AM PDT Might just be me but sometimes I'm on my phone at work or something and I don't want to be bothered while I'm doing it. I'm not sure why this wasn't implemented, though it might be my preferences. [link] [comments]

Your top 3 phones, for the 2015-16 Financial Year. Posted: 27 May 2016 08:56 AM PDT Hey everyone. This financial year has been a big year for the Android Mobile crowd. There's been a lot of innovation, a lot of change, and a lot of disappointment. With the most recent phones now having been released for a while, and users having time to wear them in. I want to know what your top 3 phones are, for the 2015-2016 financial year. It's always great to start a discussion about this, not to mention helps some of those newer to our community, pick out easy recommendations. For those who don't frequent the 'What Should I Buy?' weekly thread. As a Carrier Rep I've used quite a lot of phones this year. But here are my thoughts, so without further ado, I'll start! 3rd - Nexus6P For me, last year's third place would have to go to the Nexus6P, my daily driver. This is a completely incredible feat from Huawei and has really shown us what they're capable of, in terms of catering towards western markets. A few years ago, Huawei was considered almost a joke on this sub. The Nexus6P has brought them a lot of attention, and they deserve it too. I'm frequently seeing more 'Honor5X' or 'Mate8' flairs around the sub, and I feel that largely had to do with Huawei doing such a good job on the hardware manufacturing of the 6P. Combine the design and hardware with Google's Stock Android, with fast updates and you've got a pretty amazing phone. 2nd - HTC 10 It may come as no surprise, that the HTC 10 is something which I hold in high regard. As do many of us in this sub since it's release. But that's after the fact, because I was definitely surprised by this release. HTC were on the brink of being forgotten and dismissed as a major player not too long ago. Yet this year, they've produced the highest-end spec phone, that even gives the Galaxy S7 a run for its money in the hardware department. HTC have really come far, and learned from their mistakes. I feel this can be seen with the major camera improvements, and the much cleaner UI. If there's one thing I hate about Android, it's the bloat from manufacturers. HTC's decision to make Sense UI, functional but without adding any crap such as a HTC Calendar or Photos, has made it all the better. Not to mention that killer 24bit DAC audio output. If you haven't listened to a track on the HTC 10 yet, you need to. It's mesmerising. 1st - Nextbit Robin "What!?" I hear you cry. Well, hear me out first. Here we have a startup company, something no-one's ever heard of, with an idea to build a phone - not just any phone, a unique one. Well, they did it, and for a first time company, they've done a better job than some of the much bigger players in the market. Now, the cloud storage is a bit of a gimmick at this point, with physical storage still being preferred these days. But here is a phone, with a unique twist on Android, a clean UI that adds a lot of character to the phone. Whilst still following and respecting Material Design guidelines. The OS has quickly become my favourite skin of Android. A unique physical design that always turns heads in public, with the best front-facing speakers on a device I've heard to date. Not to mention, an amazing price point. There was a lot about the Robin that I didn't like on launch, such as the camera app. But the developers have come good on their promises to provide fixes and timely updates. Today, I can't fault the phone. It's every example that OEM's should strive for with Android. Not copying one another, not adding needless crap. Coming good on your promises and delivering a product people consider to be unique and innovative, standing out in the market. All of this, without even needing to be a "flagship specd device" and a price point to match. The Robin takes my number one place. So, those are my top three! You don't have to agree by any means. I would love to hear your own answers as to what you would recommend to everyday people or your mates. [link] [comments] |
