YouTube App Now Has an Easy Way of Rewinding and Fast Forwarding 10 Seconds.

Posted: 17 Dec 2016 07:36 AM PST

I'm sorry if this was already known in the community, but I just accidentally discovered this 5 minutes ago while watching a video. I'm thinking maybe it was added in the latest YouTube update? Or maybe I just didn't notice it from before. So basically while watching a video, Fullscreen or not, if you double tap either side of the video, it will either rewind or fast forward 10 seconds. Example, double tap on the left side and it rewinds 10 seconds. Keep tapping more and it keeps rewinding back 10 seconds until tapping is done. If this was already common knowledge, oops. I was very happy to see this because it was always so frustrating to rewind juuuuuuust a bit. Have a good day.

Really helpful and quick if you want to search for an app in the app drawer. Alternatively you had to pull up the dock, tap on the little search box and then type.

Why is that the case? Do people even use them? I find they are either very bad, don't work at all, or are just full of ads.

Why doesn't Android support media scrubbers in notifications?

Posted: 17 Dec 2016 02:41 AM PST

You know what I mean. On iPhones, having the ability to scrub through your music or video from any app through the control centre is such a luxury.

You can move forward or back by grabbing the handle along the timeline and dragging left or right. This lets you easily scrub back to a section of a song or audio book that you want to relisten to without leaving your current activity.

On the other hand, I have never found an app that provides such a control on Android, let alone any support threads that even bring up this topic. It's like we're all blind to the wonderful functionality that scrubbers bring.

It's probably a limitation of the Android notification and widget system. I know notifications can currently only have 5 maximum buttons on media widgets, which is ridiculous. Isn't Android supposed to be the king of notifications and widgets?

Tell me I'm not the only one looking for a solution or an update from Google implementing a universal media scrubber.

Tips for keeping older Android phone secure?

Posted: 17 Dec 2016 08:28 AM PST

I just recently picked up a Verizon Galaxy s6 after having bought, used, sold several phones over the past year. I really like it. It performs great, great camera, nice form factor, I have zero complaints, except that it has about one year left - if that - before it becomes abandon-ware 😣

I'd like to use this phone for another two or three years as I'm just tired of changing phones every few months.

So question is, what, if any, steps can I take to keep it secure after it stops receiving updates? Let's assume here that no root method is ever discovered.

If Blackberry had gone with Android instead of developing BBOS10, what would have been different?

Posted: 17 Dec 2016 11:23 AM PST

I would think that they would have been a lot more successful had they went with Android and had made the Priv 2 years earlier. It would make the statement that physical keyboards weren't crap.

Norwegian content provider Altibox, will deliver UHD(60fps) to customers, using a Huawei android 5.1 box.

Posted: 17 Dec 2016 06:26 AM PST

From press release:

Huawei delivers both the new TV platform and decoders used. It is the first time in the world that it launched a full 4K-capable entertainment platform based on deliveries from a single supplier.

With UHD and HDR created a richer dynamic range of colors that make images more lifelike. In addition, a higher frame rate up to 60 frames per second, which means that even fast moving images reproduced very realistically. Altogether this gives the customer a much better viewing experience. With 4K is possible to sit closer to the TV or buy larger screen and with the more detail than any standard full HDTV is able to reproduce.

Requires tremendous transmission capacity

To send the best UHD images requires tremendous transmission capacity. In practice it is only possible to do on a first fiber network. You can transfer 4K images via satellite, but a transfer of the highest quality demands so much of the satellite transponder capacity that the costs are enormous. In addition, satellite customers share in one stream, in the same way as in linear television, says product director Øyvind Lundbakk Altibox.

With gigabit infrastructure and fiber from end to end may Altibox offer one-to-one transfer of UHD content. The customer can pause, start over and record from 4K channels normally.

The recordings are stored safely in Altibox its data center in Green Mountain at Rennesøy. Thus, one can record 4K channels without filling the hard drive of the decoder. In the new TV solution to Altibox needed no decoder with hard disk. For it is possible to store 500 hours of recording, regardless of which channel the customer record from.

Is there 4K content?

Many Norwegians have already bought television is marked with UHD or 4K. But without 4K content will not utilized these televisions at its fullest. UHD is still so new that the availability of content is limited. - We are in dialogue with all the major content providers to put in place arrangements that allow us to deploy 4K content. We will have some movie titles ready from day one, and will then proceed to fill in with exciting 4K content in step with the major studios offer this. In addition, television channel in 4K, and first out is Fashion TV, says Lundbakk.

Altibox connect up the first customers with 4K UHD in March 2017.
