Numbers in upper left corner after factory reset (Android related?)

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 09:03 AM PST

Hey, I reset my Galaxy Note 3 today (had some quirks, was time after like 2 years) and I now have 5 numbers in the upper left corner? Is this something from Android?

It wasn't there before the factory reset. I thought it was maybe something from some app but I've tried all I can think of.

Thanks.

I want to get a new phone for Christmas, and I'm deciding if I should switch.

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 02:18 PM PST

So some backstory, I had an iPhone 6 for a long while but then I tripped and fell and scratched it up and my iPhone ended up being bent due to the concrete. What sucked is that I had to downgrade to my brothers old iPhone 5C and I haven't acquired a new phone since. It was around the same time as iPhone 7 was about to be released and at first I thought that I would just get that, but then I thought about it and with there being no headphone jack, and alongside the home button not really being a "button." So I'm wondering if I could switch and what phone would best suite me? One thing for me is that I enjoy the feel of iOS and I'm looking for a phone with that similar feel in the interface. I also enjoy having a button for the home button and want to know if the phone I would acquire has one of those. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

Problem when expanding status bar

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 07:33 AM PST

Hi! I set a picture as lockscreen wallpaper and now, when I expand the status bar, I can't see what's behind, like a game, or the regular wallpaper. Is there a way to get back to normal? I don't know if there is an option to disable that and I haven't found anything.

This is my regural wallpaper https://imgur.com/a/eT0ex but when I expand the status bar it looks like this https://imgur.com/a/E6uKn

My phone is a ZTE Blade S6 Flex with Android 5.1.1

Thanks

Edit: ended up doing a factory reset and now it works again. Not the best way to solve it, but hey, it works.

So, adoptable storage, what does that actually do to the sdcard?

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 12:00 PM PST

Does it install system files onto it and the phone bricks if the sdcard dies?

Or what does the phone/device actually use the sdcard for when it's "adopted"? Is it only "external apps" (that ain't stock with the device) that installs on the card? or what else installs on it?

Two glaring problems with unlocked Verizon phone

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 01:58 PM PST

Hi all. I'm using an unlocked Verizon Galaxy S5 with AT&T as of yesterday. After some finagling I've solved all my problems but two. When I call my voicemail, it tells me this user has a voicemail box that has not been set up yet and there are no options to press any buttons to navigate to any other menu. It just hangs up. Second, when I receive MMS group messages I am included as a recipient, so that when I reply like usual I then also receive the message from myself. So, it seems like when I contact myself my phone doesn't recognize its own number, if that makes sense. I am at a loss. Anybody have any ideas?

Textra drastically lowers received picture quality

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 03:44 PM PST

As the title states, textra is reducing the quality of incoming images. To the point that pictures/screen shots of text are pixelated so bad they are unreadable. Pictures my wife sends taken with her S7 edge are grainy and near potato quality.

The only MMS settings in the app are for outgoing images. And changing them nets no results.

What gives. Would hate to have to ditch textra over this...

Huawei P9Lite charging fails intermittently with QI adapter

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 03:26 PM PST

I have problem, because I bought a Huawei P9Lite, but I am still in love with wireless QI charging.

THE PROBLEM

As P9Lite does not come with QI, I have a small QI adapter that I can slip under the phone's silicon case. Unfortunately it is not working reliably with the P9Lite. Sometimes (possibly more often when battery is still quite full) the charging works as expected. If it works and I dont remove the phone from the pad, then it works all the way to full battery. However more often than not as soon as the wireless charging starts it also stops immediately, after 5-10 seconds the phone tries to again but also fails again. This cycle can go on over whole night and the battery just keeps getting emptier.

I have tried two brands of QI adapters But the problem remains. The adapters work fine on other phones. The nominal currents in those chargers are 900mA and 500mA. Also the problem happens similarly with all my QI chargers (of varying brands). I have used the same 500mA adapter successfully with my earlier Lumia phones. I have experience of QI with those Lumias and Nexus 7 for years so I believe I know how QI should work so it not about placement of the phone or something stupid like that. IMO I have pretty much ruled out solidly all other problem sources than the P9Lite itself.

When I asked technical support form Huawei earlier, they were not giving any sensible support to me on this issue. They just recommended me to give my phone to a 3rd part maintenance for two weeks, where the factory reset it, and then I would have to pay 35€ for this nonsense. I was not interested in that so I had to look in to it myself...

MY TROUBLESHOOTING

First I used ES File Explorer app to locate the key Linux "files" which are related to the charging. The interesting folders that I found were:

/sys/class/power_supply/Battery /sys/class/power_supply/Mains /sys/class/power_supply/USB /sys/devices/hisi_charger.57 /sys/devices/hisi_charging_core.58

Then I used GScript app to run some shell commands to log values in those "files". The script was basically like this:

echo "---/sys/devices/hisi_charger.57/chargerType:" >> /mnt/sdcard/QIProb/log.txt cat /sys/devices/hisi_charger.57/chargerType >> /mnt/sdcard/QIProb/log.txt

I did this for basically all "files" in those above folders in all charging state cases I could think of. Then I checked what was different in healthy and unhealthy charging. When charging from the USB power source or QI, the charging happens using the "Mains"-power source. When charging from USB2.0 port of A PC, the charging happens using "USB"-power supply.

Between healthy and unhealthy QI charging, the only varying "file" was this:

/sys/devices/hisi_charger.57/chargerType

It has value:

  • "5", when not charging. This is also the value read at the non-charging phases of the unhealthy intermittent QI charging.

  • "3", when the charging is working from the QI adapter (successfully) or using a USB cable from a power source.

  • "2", on those short moments that charging is happening in the unhealthy intermittent cycles.

  • "0", when charging from a USB2.0 port of a laptop PC.

So that is all my reverse engineering. Internet/google does not know phrase "/sys/devices/hisi_charger.57/chargerType" so I am now a bit puzzled where to go from here. So I came to reddit for help. :)

THE QUESTIONS

TLDR: My phone does not charge if it recognizes the QI adapter to be chargerType "2" instead of "3".

(1) What does "/sys/devices/hisi_charger.57/chargerType=2" mean?

(2) How does the power chip in phone decide if it is type 2 or 3?

(3) Any recommendations, to force the phone to recognize the chargerType correctly?

edit: typos and formatting

Issues with Edge Panels and other apps like Drupe not applying an opaque overlay to the background like they used to.

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 03:21 PM PST

DEVICE: Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

Example of the issue. (Apologies for the dark image, forgot to put Lux in sleep mode.)

So basically, for the past few days or so now (I don't know when exactly this issue started, to be honest.) most of the apps I use that can appear on top that also apply an opaque overlay to make text more legible seem to now be missing that overlay and makes it much more tough to read text especially with those that line up with those in the background. I've tried messing around with the Edge Panel settings to see if that could help in any way but obviously didn't work considering that I forgot that the settings mainly affected the panel slider. I have no idea whatsoever if an update did this or not, but I can't seem to figure out a possible solution to this so I decided to come to Reddit to see if anyone could help me out with this.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Okay the issue involving Drupe has been solved somewhat thanks to its own set of themes though still missing the opaque overlay like it used to have.

ZTE Blade A310

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 02:53 PM PST

Hi!

I know that the ZTE Blade A310 has an FM-radio receiver built-in. My question is, does it need headphones as an external antenna or does it work without headphone plugged in?

Android TV: icon constantly on screen

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 02:48 PM PST

Sorry if this isn't the best place for this, but I have a Sony TV running Android, and every now and again, and I can't get rid of it without turning the TV off and on again.

It looks a bit like the Google Docs app, or could just be a standard document icon. I can't interact with it and I'm struggling to find the issue online. Anyone have any idea?

Here's a weird one, my phone just randomly started emitting a very very loud beeping that only stopped after I restarted my phone

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 01:46 PM PST

So I was sitting in a coffee shop when all of a sudden my Samsung Galaxy S6 (maybe a year old) vibrated once and started beeping incredibly loudly. It was louder than any sound my phone has ever made and was so loud I thought it was a truck backing up outside. It took me a while to notice it was my phone at which point I restarted it which caused the beeping to stop. There was no notification or anything. I really am confused, a quick check of the forums gave me no results. Someone help I am really confused and curious.

Universal BT volume

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 06:10 AM PST

I'm reading articles from 2015 about this being fixed in Marshmallow, so when you adjust volume on your Bluetooth device, it changes the volume on your device as well. However, the volume control on my Jaybird X2's are still separate from the BT volume on my Pixel. What gives.? This is the thing I miss most from my iPhone.

[Q] sync files in local LAN (android<->linux)

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 12:46 PM PST

what is a good way you have to sync files from your android device and other computers running linux in the same LAN?

i do not expect smart sync, can be manual. I also do not expect to work when not in the LAN the devices share.

I do expect no cloud to be involved unless can be 100% self hosted.

Android music playback on an Apple playback only stereo?

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 12:32 PM PST

Is there an App or download to make it possible to play music, via USB connection, on an Apple only stereo (Panasonic SC-HC28)? The input is a standard/universal USB port, there is no audio input (3.5mm jack), and the stereo won't play music when my android phone is connected via USB however we play music via USB using an I-Pad regularly.

Photos question

Is there a way to make all photos I save go directly to the camera roll like iOS?

I really don't like everything downloading into its own folder for the specific app or webpage.

Huge battery drain. I have turned off everything i can think of. This is an android issue, not a rogue app..

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 01:46 AM PST

I am pulling my hair out. This also happens in airplane mode believe it or not.

I have turned off all google now, stopped gmail syncing, package disabled loads of Samsung bloat, cleared cache, tried root and custom ROMs with amplify and greenify (didn't work, went back to stock), tried reflashinfmg in emergency mode, stopped location services, stopped maps.....

Literally anything i could find on google. Please please help me troubleshoot. My phone is now a dumb phone with battery as bad if not worse than with everything else turned on.

Put my phone down at midnight, this is 9am. 9 hours not being used

Android 6 + Galaxy S5 = some apps fail to send messages, DND useless, other problems

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 12:09 PM PST

Example: Unless I turn on Facebook Page Manager, I won't get any of the messages from customers or potential customers. ESPN won't send scores anymore, even though it's all configured properly. Even Nova Launcher/Tesla Unread settings won't work. It just turns itself off.

I've double-checked everything since upgrading to A6, but it's rendering my phone a bit more useless in certain aspects.

I know the S5 is old, so perhaps that's the main issue, and I should just upgrade? Or is it salvagable?

Doubt the carrier has anything to do with it, but it's China Unicom on a non-chinese phone. Never had an issue with any of this before as long as I had my VPN on.

Can you hide an android mobile phones location when visiting websites? (google analytics)

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 04:13 AM PST

Hopefully a simple question, I have Google analytics on a personal webpage of mine and I am having a very large amount of hits coming from a single mobile device in the same location. It is literally more than all of my other hits combined.

I suspect this is all coming from one particular regular visitor who I know lives 250km away from the location where all of these mobile hits are coming from, a visitor with the exact same viewing pattern. They deny it but its way too coincidental. It shouldn't be a problem, but it is. Its a complicated issue.

So, does anyone know if when using 3G/4G on an android device, will this always appear from the location where the phone is, does it appear from the nearest reception tower or could someone spoof the location?
