  1. Why do some browsers, like Chrome, Firefox, UC Browser have such HEAVY size, whereas browsers like Opera, Lighting, APUS have 5-6 MB size when all have almost same features + browsing speed?

  2. Is it because the former ones have inbuilt webkit (someone told me this)? If yes, just that?

  3. My phone has "Android System Webview" installed by default. Does it make any difference now what browser I use? Like why not use uninstall Chrome and use Lighting browser when my phone has Android System Webview installed and updated?

Thank you!

Looking for apps made by non-profits. Both fun and practical. Any suggestions? (To spend Google Credit on in a meaningful way.)

Posted: 15 Dec 2016 06:24 AM PST

I don't have any really specific needs, but I'd be happy to spend the "money" in a way that helps out some worthy non-profit.

Ideally, it would be something either sciency, or creative. A fancy photography app would be cool, or a music making one. Or maybe something with a mindfulness meditation sort of vibe. I don't have a lot of time for games, but a simple, inspiring one would be fine, too.

Really, I'm just looking to support a non-profit, and do something good with the money. So I'm open to anything.

Thanks!

Which is the best free TTS engine for android?

Posted: 15 Dec 2016 01:11 AM PST

I want to open a pdf in an app and make the app read it out aloud to me(with varying speed). On Windows, I found the Bridget UK from Neospeech to be the most natural sounding voice. However, it is not available on Android. Which is the best TTS engine and voice on Android? I would prefer free ones.

[DEV][PROMO] Everywhere Launcher (Sidebar App)

Posted: 15 Dec 2016 01:47 AM PST

I'm giving away 100 promo codes, just comment here and you'll get a pm with one.

Everywhere Launcher

This is an advanced sidebar app that offers nearly endless possibilities of customisations and allows you to have multiple sidebars linked with one single trigger, allows you to have as many triggers as you want, allows you customise text sizes, colors, transparency, icons, paddings and much more. And it allows you to define every setting globally or overwrite every single setting on an per sidebar/handle base. It even allows you to have folders in the sidebars, it supports action folders (clicking a folder opens the first app directly, swiping it opens the folders content) and it also supports widgets (even sticky widgets, those will "open" when you open a sidebar and will be displayed next to the sidebar directly) and much more features...

Attention

This app is for people that don't mind spending a few minutes reading the infos and setting the app up, in return you get nearless endless possibilities to personalise the app. This is no one-click-setup app. But this was not the intention.

Getting a rating in return would be nice.

[Dev][New App] See all Uber & Lyft ride options in one place, with real time surge info and 1 tap to open a ride

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 10:15 AM PST

Hi friends,

Steve and I have made a new app called Ride Fair. It's a fast way to avoid surge fees and pick the best ride. Fortune covered our launch today, which is a pretty cool milestone for us :)

Features:

  • Live surge pricing for all nearby Uber & Lyft cars
  • 1 tap takes you directly to your ride in Uber or Lyft
  • "Yay! No surge :)" message confirms it has checked and there's no surge
  • Single screen design, no-nonsense
  • Continuously refreshes data
  • Free, no ads

We've had this feature buried in our edge launcher app, Sesame Edge, for a while. We kept getting requests to break into a stand alone app since it's a bit faster than GMaps. So here it is :)

We'd love to hear if this is useful and how it can be improved. Thanks!

Why it takes so long to Google to push Updates to Apps?

Posted: 15 Dec 2016 01:54 AM PST

Hey people. Why it takes so long to get the new versions of the apps? It's ridiculous. Some people have Gboard already, I still don't... Some people have Google Duo 5 version with a lot fixes... Yesterday I god update for older version... Coming from iPhone and iOS this is really annoying. I know I can sideload apk's, but don't want to install and risk with apps outside Play Store. On iOS never had this problem... When I see in some of the tech sites there is Update for some app and go to AppStore to check, update is always there... Here it's been 3 days? after the Gboard release, still nothing...

Facebook Messenger using 0.5gb of background data in one day

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 11:01 AM PST

Luckily my data resets tomorrow, but today I hit my warning cap because messenger used half a gig of data in the background. I changed nothing in my routine, and I'm usually sending gifs with friends. I had to turn off background data usage, which of course turns off push notifications. This is extremely inconvenient, and I was wondering if there was any way to see what messenger was doing to use all that data, or if there is any way to prevent it.

http://i.imgur.com/Dkkliym.png You can see how it spiked today, and I didn't change my usage. I actually used fewer gifs today than I do on normal days, but that would show as foreground anyways. Any help is appreciated.

Is there an app that allows my phone to display multiple text notifications, similar to iPhones?

Posted: 15 Dec 2016 09:24 AM PST

I'm fairly positive I've seen one before but I can't find it. I missed like 5 texts last night cause my phone only displayed the last person who texted me so I'd like to have multiple notifications for each individual person. Thanks!

Good, simple, IMAP email client? (IMAP in Gmail currently broken!)

Posted: 15 Dec 2016 09:08 AM PST

I'm looking for a good, simple, ad-free IMAP email client. I have the OnePlus3 so there is no "stock" email client (unlike LG or Samsung) except for Gmail. And the problem is that current versions of Gmail (going back a month at least) are broken when it comes to IMAP/SMTP servers. At least in terms of adding a new IMAP/SMTP account - it's not possible! Big thread on Google product forums about this, but I digress...

Other than BlueMail I'm not impressed by what I see on the Play Store. Lots of old email apps with 2011-esque UIs, and a bunch of paid apps whose free versions are littered with ads. Honestly, I just want a simple email app which is ad-free and supports IMAP for incoming email and SMTP for outgoing email. If there was such a thing as an "AOSP Email Client" that'd be perfect. Appreciate all suggestions.

Finally, an open-sourced CAF browser!

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 03:15 PM PST

Lately I've been looking around for a CAF browser (optimized Chromium browser for Snapdragon), but so far all builds I've found such as "TugaBrowser" and "YuBrowser" aren't open-sourced. Although the developers of said apps are reputable, I just couldn't see myself using it as my main browser knowing it may send my personal information over.

But alas, I found a fully open-sourced CAF browser recently published on the Google Play Store! It's called CS Browser (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.scweeny.CS.browser.dev&hl=en) and it's currently on Chrome 55. It's fast (only works properly for devices using Snapdragon Krait cores), filters ads, and has a variety of security features such as HTTPS Upgrade and XSS Defender.

The source code of the browser (along with it's variations) are available here: https://github.com/scweeny/CAF

Facebook is forcing me to install the messenger app, I refuse, but they have disabled the only means I had to view the messages through the browser, does anyone have any new workarounds?

title says it all, basically I used to be able to change the browser to desktop mode and my messages would show up, but now it just tells me to install the app not matter what I'm on.

Action Launcher as System app

Posted: 15 Dec 2016 07:03 AM PST

So, I'm trying to set up Action Launcher as a system app to utilize the Google Now integration, but whenever I do, it keeps saying I need to purchase pro. I have all the pro features enabled from quite a while ago, but when it's a system app, it's not reading the play store very well. Anything I can do?

Google Play Music

Posted: 15 Dec 2016 06:08 AM PST

Does anyone else feel that the "playlists" on Google Play Music are really buggy? I transitioned over from Songza when it integrated into Google Play Music.

We constantly have our music pause when playing over bluetooth (Nexus 6p and 5x with a soundbar and a shower speaker). Additionally sometimes the playlists just totally bug out and the app has to be reset.

I love the playlists but the buggyness is infuriating.

[DEV] Save your scores for any game you play, be it sports or anything! introducing match maker

Posted: 15 Dec 2016 05:58 AM PST

Hey, reddit!

This is a amazingly simple app I did last weekend and I thought it could be useful for you guys too! Its idea came in when I was playing badminton and had no way to save our scores to check out later.

You just create a new match (and change its title), add/rename the teams or people that might play and... done! You can also change the winner at anytime and no rules are pre-defined, meaning that anyone can play and record a match of anything that has scores!

Available at the Play Store!

EDIT: Messed up with the title because for some reason this subreddit capitalizes every single word when adding a new post, then I forgot to capitalize "Introducing Match Maker", sorry
