Asphalt Xtreme Overview

Posted: 29 Dec 2016 06:03 PM PST

This game has been getting quite bashed around here lately, so as someone who already completed one month playing, with 40+ hours, i want to say stuff about it, while trying to be impartial. (Except when dealing with trucks.)

I've been playing off-road games since ATV on PS2, and they're easily my favorite kind of racing game, especially the ones who gives freedom in tracks. (More about that later.) My most played off-road game was Motor Storm: Artic Edge on PSP (Curiously, a portable one too.), so Xtreme kinda filled this empty space that was left for some time.

First of all, some pro's and con's.

Pro's: - This is a hard, but fair game, and the sensation of getting the first place isn't empty like most other racing games.

  • Every car style feels differently, wich keeps the game fresh.

  • You can actually go pretty far without money, and it doesn't hurt not to buy it.

  • Tracks aren't the best in the genre, but they're far from bad. I feel spoiled from where i came, tough, so take that with a grain of salt.

  • Trucks are amazing.

  • The challenges the game asks you to complete teaches, give replayability, and some will make you suffer (Wich is good.)

  • Excellent Soundtrack

  • Visuals feel dirty, not dirty enough for me, but we know the mobile limitations, and they're great for what it is.

  • Motherfucking TRUCKS

Con's

  • Gameloft just don't know how to price things. I wish i could support the game in some way, but those prices are ridiculous. Never bought and don't plan in buying any IAP soon.

  • Always-on partially kills one of the best single-player campaings for racing in the mobile market right now.

  • While on lower level's OIL actually just don't bother at all (I never actually stopped playing the game because of it, just in some masteries tough.) On higher level's the cooldown starts getting ridiculous.

  • If you're trying really hard, not spending money on the start could left you behind on some competitions. (More on that later.)

The Overview:

First, as a racing game, Asphalt Xtreme delivers the core: A good competition, the feeling of "speed", and quite a bit of outplaying mechanics and a skillcap to master. Moving forward from this, what will say if the game is bad or good, will rely on his design choices, and personal opnions. I will talk about design choices here, i can't change your opnions at all.

First design choice: Semi-linear tracks. Now, yes, you can choose to race in various ways in asphault, but let's not overlook something you will find when trying your time attacks on competitions and on Single Player: For each vehicle, there is only one major way of doing your track, and if you fail to do it, you get behind. While this at first is kinda depressing, as i would love jumping more with my trucks or taking the drift corner instead of the jumping one, you get the other side of the coin: The game rewards those who know how to play, even if you don't use the best car. I feel the game becomes some crazy guitar-hero thing, where you need to get every boost on the right time, every turn perfectly. It feels a bit overwhelming trying to do your best, but it's just so satisfying getting that first place, or a good time.

Design Choice: The cars

This is one of the best parts for me. In some games, if you don't buy that next machine, you will be left behind. But here, i say to you: If they just left every D-Level car (Downgrading the camaro so muscles aren't cut), the game would still feel great. If you're the collector type, and must get all the cars pretty fast, yea, this game isn't for you. Right now i got all D/C and some B tier cars, and i already feel like they're too much. But here's the even better thing: Every car feels different, even in their own styles. My dear Unimog, for exemple, it's a Truck who boost's takes ages for deplete, while the Bulldog (C-tier truck) get's a ballance in boost speed and duration, while the Red tiger (B-tier truck) goes fullspeed Boost and cut's more corners in duration. That's just the tip of the iceberg, tough. In others game's, i could advance and just forget about my first cars, but not here, the predator you use on your first Series on the single player, still goes on with you all the way to the Pro Series (Where im sitting at right now.). And this is really great.

Design Choices: Upgrades

This one here is bad, can't lie. While you will be able to upgrade your favorite cars, and like me go all your way to pro series and beyond, the game start starving you from cards, inciting you to buy them if you desire to max your vehicle. While you do not need to max, it does feel like a cheap design choice, and i can't get behind it. But i will give gameloft something: At least they didn't put a paywall, and im already on the pro series (There is only one more after this one.).

Design Choices: Multiplayer aspect

First of all, yes, if you pay you have one advantage: Better cars to compete in the clashes and tournaments where you need to get the best time. And when you and the other have equal skill, there is only one thing who matters: How powerfull is your vehicle. This is balanced by having 3/4 rewards that you will surely get if you complete the race and it's conditions, but you will suffer in the leaderboard, compared to the ones who pay for cards and S-Tier vehicles.

The multiplayer races tough, are balanced, and mostly only skill matters. Your car rating defines who you will race, so it just doesn't matter if you have a fully upgraded S-tier car, because you will race against players from the same level. While there is the extra-tank and nitro boosts, those are more useful for who are learning the game, as experienced players will do well enough with vanilla cars.

I think this covers most of the game, so, let me add just a few things.

The more important thing to know, if you want to play this game is: Yes, you can do it for free, and you wouldn't loose too much. Keep your B-Tier vehicles upgraded, and you can get most of the multiplayer clashes rewards, while doing quite well in champioships. The game rewards you a lot for those event's, and your progress will be smooth if you keep doing them.

Try to leave some D-Tier Vehicles without an Elite Card, as you can play Multiplayer matches fast, and win the daily rewards for so.

If i have some tip to give, it would be: Don't regret spending money on upgrading, or buying a new vehicle, just don't jump ships. If you're racing on D/C Tier racings, spending money on an A-Tier car will grant you nothing, as it will take a lot of time to use these. But don't feel bad about upgrading that Ford Focus and spending all your money: You've just unlocked his mastery, wich gives also great rewards and even more money for you.

Value your 2x Gold power-ups. It's the best thing you can buy in the game, if you will sit and play for those 4-hours. Actually, every token you win, should be spent on this blessing, as you will be able to easily buy your cars and upgrades, as i said, just spare those 4 hours to play, and you will be rewarded.

I think i said most of the things i wanted, but if you have any question, feel free to post here, i may have missed something.

Why do some games in the Google play store say free and make then make you buy them inside?

Posted: 29 Dec 2016 04:38 PM PST

Is there a hidden benefit to doing this? If I go to a new phone will I still have access to the game that I paid for inside of the free app? Sorry, I don't know where else to post this question.

Edit: Sorry for the typo in the title. I'm referencing a game for my 2 year old son. It's called endless alphabet/endless numbers. They say free and then when you get into the app it's ten bucks. I want to buy these for him, but I want them to be mine permanently, because we have a younger son and another child on the way.

Do you natural favor games that have tap controls with no onscreen buttons or do you favor games that have onscreen controls mimicing a controller?

Posted: 29 Dec 2016 10:54 AM PST

The games I seem to play the most have basic tap controls like Dash Quest , Bison Burrito, Tap titans, Army of Darkness Defense. There are very few games that have onscreen controls that I play and most of them were the old gameloft games. What type of control setup do you prefer in your games?

Are most controllers for android "plug and play"? I'm having a terrible time getting my PS4 controller to work, and I don't want to buy a separate controller without guarantees it will work

Posted: 29 Dec 2016 07:09 AM PST

The DS4 is laggy, keybinds don't work, etc and it only works on my Nexus 6P, it doesn't work on my Galaxy Tab A.

If I go out and buy a controller that is recommended either here or from emulation on android, will they work? Is there anything I should look out for beforehand?

I want to be able to play games, emulators, etc on my tablet with a controller but I am at a loss for what to do.

What I was looking at buying was: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/8bitdo-8bitdo-nes30-pro-bluetooth-gamepad-controller-nes30pro/10400754.aspx?path=a0a14cb111624e2857b9091e8793aab2en02

I am primarily using it for Nes, Snes, GBA, GB, and maybe some psp.

Will this work on both my tab a and my 6p?
