All the ones I've seen open through an app or by activating a toggle. I want to be able to set a different passcode (for example, 123456) and when I enter it, it opens a profile that I had previously modified to only allow certain permissions [link] [comments]  |

| Edit /etc/hosts to block IP addresses Posted: 08 Dec 2016 02:31 PM PST On my mac I edit the hosts file to block thousands of IP addresses known to serve ads or be malicious. I update the list every so often from someonewhocares.org. Tried editing hosts on GS7 but got access denied. Why is this locked? Do I need root to edit this file? Or can I edit it with some sort of PC based android development team kit with the phone connected to the PC? [link] [comments]  |
| Notification shade customization? Posted: 08 Dec 2016 04:41 PM PST Hey guys, So I've been an Android user for almost 2 years now and recently got a Pixel XL, yay! I've had a lot of Android phones including a 6p, s7, OP3 the list goes on. Out of all these phones, I've been lucky enough to try them and see what I like and don't like. I am a huge fan of design and love the nougat beta for the s7. I'm a fan of a lighter colored interface and they nailed it. Lots of whites with splashes of color here and there. A+ I still however prefer the Pixels software, zero touch latency and the piece of mind knowing that my updates/latest and greatest will come straight from Google, somewhat promptly. Though as a designer/lover of design I have a few gripes with Google. Why does your marketing/showing of the Pixel phones always have that clean whites with sprinkles of color, but software says different? In the settings menu, dark blacks with white and a weird blue? Wtf is that? Notification shade, black with white icons? I know I'm not the only one that thinks that's fugly. I know Google has had design issues for a while now, but c'mon guys. You are a software company that prides itself in "Material Design". Material Design does not call for a phone app that has a semi see through, ugly shade of blue when in a phone call. I think their design team really needs to sit down and think about what they really want. It took Samsung a long time, but they finally did it with Nougat. Why can't Google get this straight? My proposal Google. Save the blacks for a black theme. White for a white theme. Then let us customize icons with certain colors etc. Like OnePlus has with their community builds. Simple yet effective customization. Lastly, please for Bob sake, re-re design that phone app. It's awful. P.S. after all I said, does anyone know of an app like Navbar apps that can customize the notification pulldown? If you are reading this Navbar apps guy or girl, I'd pay money for this. | Camera damaged because of overheating of my rooted phone? Any chance to get a refund? Posted: 08 Dec 2016 10:54 AM PST Yes, I know you lose the warranty when you root your phone, but maybe, because this is a hardware issue... So I have an Elephone P8000. This phone has metallic frame around the whole body, so it basically works as a heat sink. The phone gets quite hot when I play cpu heavy games, but nothing extreme. But when I lay it on my bed while charging and just browse reddit, the phone can get so hot it actually hurts to touch it. I sometimes get alerts to remove the battery, because it's overheating, but this phone has non-removeable battery. I rooted the phone a while ago and installed two different ROMs already, nothing changed, so it probably wasn't a software issue. And recently the phone just decided the main camera and LED don't exist. It just doesn't detect it at all. And the front camera is upside down for some reason. I guess this could by caused by the overheating. When it burns so much outside the phone it must be really hell inside. So I wonder if I could contact the shop I bought it from and get a refund, or if they'll just deny it because I rooted my phone? [link] [comments]  |

| Moto X 2014 vs Nexus 5x..(Used) Posted: 08 Dec 2016 01:21 PM PST I have a choice between the Moto x 2014 and the nexus 5x... Both used both from people I know and trust so I know the phones are both in good condition. The thing is, the moto is 130 dollars and the 5x is 165. Is it worth it to spend the extra 35 dollars. ( By the way if the moto won't get updates from newer versions of android it won't be that much of a problem since I am planning on installing cyanogenmod ) Any help on the choice is appreciated. | Unable to turn on "Trusted Voice" in Nougat 7.1.1b on Nexus6P Posted: 08 Dec 2016 01:07 PM PST See the video below for what happens. I enter the menu, select the switch to enable Trusted Voice and am prompted to authenticate with password or fingerprint. As shown in the video, whether I use my fingerprint or enter the PIN, it wilkl kick me back to the first screen and not enable Trusted Voice. I've already attempted reboots into normal and safe mode. As soon as I gave my phone permission to lock, ring and erase on command from the PC, it turned off. Turning it on, I couldn't get past the blinking 'Samsung' logo. I thought it was odd but didn't blame the Device Manager. I ended up doing a factory reset and losing all of my files that weren't backed up. This was four days ago. Today I see again the device manager site that I'd bookmarked and decide to try it once more. As soon as I give permission, my phone turns off and won't boot. Has turning on device manager ever killed someone's device? I'm a bit pissed off that this has happened twice. [link] [comments]  |

Posted: 08 Dec 2016 09:09 AM PST I have a OnePlus 3, which has a chipset comparable to the MotoZ (which recently got Daydream support officially) and now has a 7.0 official ROM. This suggests that the OP3 is capable of Daydream, but OP themselves have said they're not actively pursuing compatability. | Can't Answer Incoming Calls or Change Settings in Default Phone app. Posted: 08 Dec 2016 04:28 PM PST The Problem: When i receive a phone call i ONLY feel the vibration, and do not see the incoming call screen. I cannot answer a call and can only wait until I see the missed call number. The last time this similar issue posted, it was on a Nexus6 running MM. The fix was the change notification settings, and restart the phone. Problem is that when I go to Settings-->Apps-->Phone-->Notifications a blank screen comes up, with no options to toggle at all. Not greyed out, i mean NO options at all. Running Nexus 6P running 7.1.1, everything up to date. I have tested the issue in every circumstance I could think of. The incoming call does not show ever, whether phone screen is on, screen off, screen on and within the default phone app, screen on and in 3rd party app (Contacts, DW Dialer, Dialer), screen on and on home page. I have gone to the 3rd party app settings and turned notifications on... no difference. So i went to adjust notification settings in the default phone app and found the problem... I cannot change or even see any settings in the phone app. Tried restarting, turning off/on, restarting bootloader, clearing cache and data in the default phone app, enabling/disabling, clearing cache, then a combination of disable-->clear cache-->restart-->enable. Still no notification settings appear. Kinda stuck and feel there's some bug in 7.1.1 I'd rather not restore and start from scratch again.... Anyone else have this? [link] [comments]  |

| How to Receive MMS over WiFi on Verizon Phone with T-Mobile Service (Android 4.4.4) Posted: 08 Dec 2016 04:22 PM PST Thanks in advance for any help. I love my Note 4. I bought a Verizon phone off Craigslist even though I have T-Mobile. I was told that Verizon phones can work on just about any carrier's network. I soon found out that there is a major issue with receiving MMS texts while on WiFi. At first it was no big deal - I would disconnect wifi occasionally and then catch up on the group texts that didn't come through. It became the proverbial pebble in the shoe, where the first few steps aren't so bad, but after miles and miles - that pebble feels like a boulder. I tried using many text messaging apps, and some work better than others. I've even paid for a few. Yatta - the app I am using now, gets around this by turning off wifi when a MMS is incoming. It will then turn wifi back on. This solution was fine at first, but now it has turned into pebble 2.0. I stream a lot on my phone, and every time I get a MMS and lose wifi, the buffer in the video is lost, or worse, it starts the video over from the start. I try to kill the app but then the wifi won't connect because the Yatta app killed the wifi and not android, so the phone thins the wifi is still on. I am so fed up with this. It is to the point that I am considering going back to my Galaxy S4 to not have to suffer through this issue. So, (TLDR:) does anyone have the verizon Note 4 configured to accept T-mobile MMS over WiFi or have a messaging app that will allow it? If it matters, the model number is SM-N910V. I am willing to root the phone if necessary (actually, I have been wanting to root and customize it - but am unsure if I could solve this issue through rooting) Thanks for reading this diatribe. | Android is only partially charging Posted: 08 Dec 2016 04:13 PM PST I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and I am having a Charging problem with it. Basically, my phone will not charge unless it is connected to a PC and/or a Laptop. Whenever I connect it to a wall port it will say it is charging but will decrease even if I'm not using it. I've tried different chargers that work on my sister's and mom's phone and they do the same thing, say they are charging but will decrease even if I'm not using it, the brightness is all the way down and battery saving mode is on. is there anything I can do to fix it and/or has anyone ever heard of this type of problem before? However, someone called me shortly after and the old ringtone played instead. I went back into settings to verify that I had indeed changed the ringtone, but it was changed back. What's more, the file wasn't even on my phone anymore. I redownloaded, changed the ringtone setting and had someone call me. It worked. It has been working for about a day but then someone called me today and it had been switched back to the original ringtone. I checked and the file isn't even on my phone anymore. What is happening. | Something keeps turning off my mobile hotspot Posted: 08 Dec 2016 03:48 PM PST Not sure if this is the right place for this question but... I use a mobile hotspot on my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and it worked really well with no disconnections for a long time... Now ever since I connected to one of those bullshit Xfinity Wifi spots I keep getting a weird flickering push notification on my lock screen. It is never there long enough to click it or see what it actually is but I have determined that it is turning off my mobile hotspot. This never happened before but I am hoping someone knows what it might be and how to fix it. My attempts: Disable wifi and searching for available hotspots Disable bluettooth Disable extreme location accuracy (uses wifi to get more accurate gps data) I cant find anything else that may be causing the issue... any advice or help is greatly appreciated.
