With this Evernote fiasco, I'd like to call attention to another service that is not encrypted and allows employees to browse your data at will...

Amazon Drive.

I need an unlimited storage solution, and Amazon Drive is an excellent (and possibly only) value in this category. Unlimited storage of all files for $60/year. Mobile and PC.

However, I've had to manually encrypt all of my data because of this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201376540

Specifically, there are two parts that are scary. 1, the informed written consent of people you take pictures of. And 2, their absolute power over your files.

I think this policy needs to be changed, but I'm not sure how to go about this, other than having a massive amount of attention to it. Suggestions welcome! And yes I've called this in to their customer service line quite a few times over the past year. No changes.

Any thoughts?

Redmi 4 Prime Review/AMA

Posted: 16 Dec 2016 01:49 PM PST

TL;DR: Absolutely unmatched value for the price, hardware is up to upper-midrange territory and battery life is ridiculous. Ridiculous. MIUI takes a while after using AOSP for years but it's not annoying, just different. Only big issue is the super shitty mic, hopefully a software update can patch things up a bit.

Reasonably formatted wall of text:

I'm coming from my trusty 3-year-old Moto OG so any device would've been a huge upgrade, I'll try to weigh that into my comments because I'm trying to be as helpful as I can to anyone considering the R4P.

  • Screen: Can't say anything about calibration or whatever, it looks super sharp @440ppi and it has some calibration options so you probably can fix or at least mitigate any annoyance you have with the screen. The backlight is very uniformly lit which was a nice surprise but the blacks are as gray as you'd expect for the price.

  • Body and build: This is the size of an iPhone and that's awesome. On the build side there's nothing too notable. If you've grabbed a metal phone before you pretty much know how it feels. No creaking at all, somewhat slippery and that's pretty much it. Also, I don't know if it's just me coming from a plastic phone but the metal gives me the sensation that it's pretty soft and it will dent easily, however I still haven't dropped to see if that's me being weird or an actual issue.

  • Battery: Holy fucking shit. I finish days at 70% and consistently get 10h of SoT if I decide not to charge it overnight. I think Doze isn't doing much but I can vouch for the 'just slap a huge battery and call it a day' philosophy.

  • Camera: as pretty much any camera in this segment, great under nice lighting and quickly worsens as light gets lower. I'll update with pics once I take a few more low light shots. As I don't know anything about photography I'd appreciate if someone can critique the pictures from a more technical standpoint but again, a million times better than my 5mp Moto and good enough for reasonably-lit dickpics social media.

Pics

  • Battery, again: Seriously, holy shit. I had no idea how enjoyable life becomes when you don't babysit your phone at all.

  • Performance: just as anything else you could buy in 2016, absolutely fine for trivial UI interactions and app loading. Sure you can get something better but 625+3GB should handle almost anything you throw at it and I value power efficiency much more than a couple of milliseconds shaved off every other tap. I've had like 2 real stutters since I got it and I'm pretty sure it was more because of software quirks than because of a lack of horsepower.

  • Heating: it does get warm while charging, I'm not accustomed to metal phones so it might be normal but my Moto OG -with its smartwatch SoC- never got hot so that's new to me. Games run at normal temperature even for 1 hour of continuous playtime.

  • MIUI: This is a big one. A lot of people have written about MIUI way better than I can so what I have to offer is the view from a guy who's been running AOSP since 2013. It's fine and there a lot of actually good looking themes (currently running Hybrid V8) but I'd advise you not to try to closely emulate Material Design since it just feels like a weird knockoff. And that basically applies to everything about MIUI: if you are a proud Nexus Warrior with a Shamu tatted on each ass cheek then MIUI is not for you, but if you're a non-obsessive user who just wants a functional and deeply customisable canvas for your apps then you're good to go with MIUI. My biggest dislike is the lock screen (which I think is one of the nicest parts of AOSP) but since it has a fingerprint scanner I hardly ever see it.

  • Audio: Without a doubt this is the biggest weakness of this phone. The mic crackles like crazy and voice calls make me sound like a bad impression of a sad Stephen Hawking. I think the headphone jack is also weaker than the one on my Moto but that can be just me being crazy.

  • Final thoughts: This is a great purchase. When Moto announced the Z Play I had a this is it moment and thought that would be my next device but with the Redmi I think you're getting 90% of that phone for 30% of the price. Great budget phone for any non enthusiast and even for some enthusiasts than can go to MIUI with an open mind.

There is a lot of stuff I didn't cover here so if there's anything you'd like to know just ask away!

I just got a pretty drastic update for Facebook Messenger; seems like they're trying to emulate Snapchat, although why they would want to do that with Instagram already doing the same thing confuses me.
