1. The Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Created by jimmy wales and Larry Sanger. Were wales was credited with defining the goal of making a publicity editable encyclopedia, Sanger is credited with the strategy of using wiki to reach that goal.
2. Its a nonprofit organization owned by the wikimedia foundation and the largest and most popular general reference work on the internet.
3. Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001. It was only in the English language initially, but quickly developed similar version in other language.
4. English Wikipedia is the largest out of more than 290 versions of encyclopaedias on Wikipedia. Overall it consissuccessful.than 40 million articles in more than 250 different languages and on February 2014, it had 18 billion page views and nearly 500million unique visitors each month.
5. Wikipedia was originally developed from another encyclopedia project called Nupedia. Other encyclopedia online were attempted before wikipedia, but none were so successful. Wikipedia Alexa rank as at September 2016 is 7
