"Ok Google, call ______" will make the phone call, but it changes the phone number... Anyone know why?

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 02:53 PM PDT

As the title says, I say "ok Google" and then command it to call someone. It will do that, but then puts a space in their number and ends up calling a totally out of service phone number. It makes no sense. I'm on CM13 if anyone's wondering. I've tried full restore and re install of google and reconfigured everything, but it just keeps doing it.

When I just manually tap them to make a call it works flawlessly...

I'm going to assume I'm cursed and no one has a solution to such an obscure problem as my google-fu has turned up nothing.

How to free up Galaxy S5 storage space?

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 02:06 PM PDT

I don't have much installed. I had one game on my phone, but just uninstalled it because it took the last bit of storage my phone had.

The System Memory takes up over 5GB. Is there any way to reduce this?

There's like 50 apps installed that come with the phone that I can't uninstall. Is there any way around this?

SuperSU: Should I update it or not? A lot of talk about latest update not being safe...

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 01:24 AM PDT

Google Play is asking me to update SuperSU, and I have had it set to not autoupdate. Is it worth updating it? Or is there something I can do so it doesn't always ask me to update?

I'd also appreciate some context (why it is/isn't safe to update).

Something is stealing focus from apps

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 01:14 PM PDT

This is not only a strange problem, but a difficult one to search for. I might not have the right words to describe it, so I'm really hoping you guys can help.

I have a Galaxy S6 Edge on Verizon and lately it's been behaving strangely. Basically it seems like something is pulling focus away from apps or hitting the back button. Here are some specific app examples:

Byte Master: there is a pop up that shows up when you start the app to alert you to how many bytes you earned while offline. This show's up once in a while for a brief second, as if the app lost focus and regained it right away.

Recent Apps: closes and goes back to home screen occasionally.

Pokemon Go: while throwing a pokeball, ball stops as if finger was taken off the screen for a moment, or as if focus was stolen from the app.

Keyboard in Messaging App: when pulling up the keyboard, it is minimized right away, as if focus was lost or the back button was pressed.

I haven't yet tried a factory reset since I would like to find out what's causing this without having to go that far. I will if I have to.

I've deleted recently downloaded apps that could have been causing problems. I can't reproduce the problem at will, it happens very erratically.

Anyone run into something similar or have any idea what could be going on?

Help restoring precious data from a broken phone?

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 03:14 PM PDT

I recently dropped my Nexus 6, shattering the screen. The phone turns on but the screen is entirely black and unusable. This phone has loads of important photos, music, and other files accrued over the course of years.

My question is, how can I retrieve the data / get it onto my computer while the device is unusable? Normally I would just plug in a usb to my computer and transfer the files but it would seem that USB debugging is not enabled on the nexus, and I have no way of getting into the phone and turning it on.

I know it's partially on me for not backing up all of my things, but am I really just at a loss because I accidentally dropped my phone? All that data, gone, simply because I cracked my screen?

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

[7.0] [Nexus 5X] Battery percentage not always showing

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 12:26 PM PDT

I have set the battery percentage to always show in System UI Tuner.

When I have 30%+ battery everything is fine --- I see the percentage inside the battery as usual.

When I fall below some unknown threshold (I think 15%) and battery saver kicks in, I instead see a plus icon inside the battery, meaning I can't see if I'm at 14%, or 4%.

Any ideas on how to NOT show the battery saver plus, or show the percentage elsewhere? As it is I think battery saver is obvious enough by the gigantic red bar it puts on my screen!

Thanks in advance

Lg g3 issue, what can it be ?

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 04:26 PM PDT

So I have a spare lg g3 that I just use for shits and giggles browsing the internet, downloading stuff, just my messing around phone. But recently I've had a major issue, started a few weeks ago first but just turning off randomly if I opened certain apps, like snapchat, and my camera app, If it didn't shut down the phone any pictures I took wouldn't load. After a few days off it turning off randomly it finally took a shit and doesn't turn on without being on the charger, the weird part is that it only stays on if it's at 100% battery life if it falls below that off the charger it'll turn off.

What are possible reasons why this is happening ? Will a system reboot fix it ?, could it be the battery ? Or is it just time to swap it out ??

Automatically pull up the keypad during a call

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 04:14 PM PDT

I would like to try to automatically pull up the keypad during a call and have it dial "9" I've tried tasker / autoinput and I've tried the "automate" app but nothing seems to be able to pull up the keypad while a call is ongoing.

Here's what I'd like to do:

1) My phone auto answers when a specific number calls me (This I was able to do)

2) Pull up the keypad (cannot do)

3) Dial 9 (cannot do)

4) end call.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please let me know. Thank you!!

Do you gay think if I change ROM I would stop from having that problem?

Nexus 6 not getting Facebook Messenger notifications

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 02:01 PM PDT

Running 6.0.1 This morning I woke up and my phone no longer got notifications from messenger except when I am in the app itself. I have restarted the phone, cleared the cache and reinstalled the app in addition to checking all of my chats to make sure that they are all not muted (they aren't), I would be less confused about this if it didn't give me notifications while I was in the app but I have no clue why this is happening at this point and have run out of ideas.

Is Google Tasks dead?

New to rooting and have some questions.

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 01:13 PM PDT

I've been thinking about rooting my Nexus 5x and after a couple hours of research I'm getting confused from old information out there and had some questions

Must Haves:

  • Banking apps: Chase/USAA/Frost/Experian
  • Updates without a PC (OTA preferred)
  • ElementalX Kernel
  • Project Fi Support

Nice to Haves:

  • Android pay - I don't actually use this but may want to in the future; easyloss for me.
  • Adaway
  • Encryption

Questions:

  1. Can flashfire and chainfires auto-root scripts replace twrp for rooting and flashing?
  2. What are the pros/cons or limitations of stock recovery for Nexus 5x aside from nandroid backups?
  3. Do I need to turn off encryption for TWRP to work with Nougat in its current state?
  4. Will OTA's work with systemless root and the new update scheme with Nougat? With or without TWRP

Can I get my phone to ask before switching to mobile?

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 12:53 PM PDT

What app can help with this? My home wifi is a bit odd lately, specially in the farther corners of the house. Sometimes I'm watching videos or skyping and the connection switches without me noticing, and the data plan takes a hit. I could turn the mobile data off while at home but I don't always remember to do so and tend to forget when going out, so I may miss important WhatsApp msgs or mail. Help?

Please and thank you.

Moto G4, Marshmallow 6.0.1 - encrypt "portable" sd card?

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 11:47 AM PDT

I have an encrypted Moto G4 with MM 6.0.1. I recently added an SD card that I do not want to adopt as internal storage, but want to use as encrypted storage for media, galleries and such (to prevent access in case of loss or theft). Is this possible in Marshmallow? I've seen screens showing SD card encryption options for Lollipop but there's nothing like that on my phone. Thanks in advance!

How to begin understanding what constitutes "good choices" for my device (Galaxy S6 Edge)?

Posted: 16 Sep 2016 05:49 AM PDT

So I switched from iOS to Android about a year ago, seeking more customization and generally wanting to get out from under Apple's thumb.

I'm a pro-am web-developer who works in python as well: self-taught, I make a living at it, but I came from design rather than the technical side of things and have always struggled to grasp system-level, or hardware-concerned stuff: I am a UI/UX guy, not tech support if you follow.

I have found the plethora of possibility on Android really, really daunting: after some initial false starts in trying to really delve into my S6 and all I might do with it, liberated from iOS as I was, I basically got frustrated and used the thing more or less as it shipped.

But I've had a renewed interest in becoming Android competent. Some of my goals here are:

1) rooting (this i don't need help with): but subsequently

2) possibly choosing a custom ROM and/or kernel--but I want to understand this choice, and I don't know how to get started becoming educated here--I'd like to be able to recognize an absent feature that'd be relevant to me or constraints/risks I wish to avoid. I've gone over the sub's FAQ content on this and it doesn't quite get me where I want to be--it's more like good window shopping than a buyer's guide, if you follow. I'm willing to invest some hours here learning.

3) I'd like to understand Android as an OS better: I'm an OS X user by day and I understand the (very) basics of UNIX and, in an OS X environment, I know which things I can mess with and which things I can't--I don't have that fear of accidentally damaging my system because I got curious one day. I find this fear is amplified on my phone because of my ignorance and because of the practical necessity of having a well-functioning phone.

When I read things about optimizing and speeding up one's phone, switching the filesystem to EXT4, better JS engines, yadda yadda... I find it all very exciting.

How do I get from where I am to where I want to be without needing a comp-sci degree? How do I efficiently become a master hobbyist? I got there on OS X because I've had a Mac for 20 years... it was anything but an efficient climb, mostly trial-and-error, learning to fix what I broke. I'd really like to take a gentler path into Android. Thanks for any resources, advice, sympathetic anecdotes, tough love or tools you all might offer. Cheers.

Edits: grammar

[UK] Problems with Nougat OTA update
