[Beta] The first public release of the /r/Android App Store is available for testing!

Posted: 10 Sep 2016 04:30 PM PDT

If you haven't yet read the previous sticky thread, we recently sent out a call for help to create an app store to showcase Redditor-made Android apps.

Many of you replied pledging your support in various ways, and we greatly appreciate all of the help, but /u/multimoon and /u/mDarken took the initiative and quickly began working on getting a working build of an app store in place. Rather than fragment the work between different developers, we decided to go with the work started by these two.

After a couple of internal test builds shared with the mods (mostly in order to fix the wiki page itself, as it wasn't consistent enough to pull data into the app), we're now ready to release the first public version of the /r/Android App Store!

Now I know that the "app store" name is a bit confusing, since we aren't actually hosting any of the apps here. This app is basically a much neater front for the app wiki that we maintain. All of the apps are actually hosted on the Play Store. The purpose of the /r/Android App Store is to showcase and support apps made by Redditors.

You can download the latest public release here. Here's a direct link to the APK.

Edit: here are some screenshots http://imgur.com/a/SpnJv

The app is totally free (as in, no ads) and open-source. It's mostly functional at this point, but there are a few things the developers want to note:

  • This is a preview and may contain a bug or two

  • You are encouraged to contribute to the project if you know any amount of development: https://github.com/d4rken/reddit-android-appstore/

  • Report bugs at: https://github.com/d4rken/reddit-android-appstore/issues

  • Screenshots are planned to be included within each app's description. These will be pulled from the Play Store page for each app when you click on the app for more details.

  • App icons are planned to be added. These will be pulled from the Play Store and will be stored in cache.

Otherwise, all feedback is welcome in the comments below.

Again, major thanks to /u/multimoon and /u/mDarken (both of whom themselves have apps listed in the Play Store, so check them out!)

Sunday Rant/Rage (Sep 18 2016) - Your weekly complaint thread!

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 04:02 AM PDT

Note 1. Join our Discord, IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

  • Your device.

  • Your carrier.

  • Your device's manufacturer.

  • An app

  • Any other company

Rules

1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

The Pixel XL looks awesome with the rumor specs but as a current Nexus 6p owner is it worth the upgrade? What you guys think? Also what is making you want to upgrade?

BlackBerry Priv owners, how are your device holding up?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 05:01 PM PDT

It's been about one year since the Priv was released, and people on forums have been providing very mixed reviews about their feelings about the phone. Some phones have build quality issues, others don't, battery life seems really inconsistent, and some complain that the Priv overheats. BlackBerry said that the Marshmallow update would fix a lot of these issues, but it's unclear whether it did. It'd be interesting to see how BlackBerry Priv owners report their devices to be performing after all this time.

[Dev] Sun Locator AR - Predict the Sun's Location

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 08:13 AM PDT

Screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/12vRq

I developed an app called Sun Locator, that predicts the sun's position at a specific location during the course of the day and year. The Augmented Reality feature displays the Sun's position directly overlaid on your device's camera. Use the slider to set the time of day and directly track the solar movement. The Map View feature displays the sun location on a map.

The app helps in planning photography shootings, camping, other outdoor activities, gardening, landscaping, home improvement etc.

The app is available in two versions:

Link to Google Play for the lite version: The lite version is free and is limited to information for the current day

Link to Google Play for the Pro version: The pro version displays information for any day of the year.

If you have any more ideas and comments, I'd be happy to hear them.

In a perfect stock Android world, where every smartphone has 100% stock Android on it with an unlocked bootloader, what would you buy? (iPhones with stock Android as well, and fine, blackberry too)

Note 7, hands down. I have a strong aversion to Touchwiz. By strong aversion I mean ITS THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE. Thoughts?

How many of you are using or used a live wallpaper recently?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 12:47 PM PDT

Back in the froyo or gingerbread era, live wallpapers were a major thing on android, especially that they didn't (and still don't) exist on iOS. Remember the nexus one live wallpaper? I loved it, I used it on my nexus S all the time even though it was draining the battery and decreased the performance. Actually that was the main reason their popularity went down in time, because they were using a lot of ram and cpu, battery life suffered. Nowadays, the recent flagships have more then enough horsepower to run pretty much any kind of live wallpaper, but they aren't cool anymore. The selection isn't very rich on the playstore, and they just aren't popular anymore. I haven't seen or heard of anybody using one in years.

Why don't Android hardware manufacturers build to a common BIOS specification?

Posted: 17 Sep 2016 07:00 PM PDT

Forty years of PC evolution later, you would think that the industry have learned a few things from it. One of the smarter ideas from that era is the use of a common BIOS to make all the PC-clones identical to the operating system, so one common Windows OS release can be installed everywhere. The common baseline ensures the minimal usability is always achieved at the end of system installation. Yes there are still hardware-specific drivers but even if these are not installed the basic system still works. It is much easier to fix a driver problem when the system is up and connectivity to the Internet is there.

So my big question is about Android fragmentation, the inability to get every phone to the latest release. Why in the era of Java and JVM/JIT optimisation, it is not possible to make a process whereby all the phone manufacturers achieve a baseline of hardware compatibility (virtually)? Why is not possible to have one common system release that everyone can install? Why is the hardware dependant features of phones not moved into driver libraries (to be upgraded separately), but bundled monolithically into ROMs making the need for the complexity of tracking builds, versions, manufacturer, chipset etc.

TLDR: Why are the best practices of PC era not applied to the Mobile era?

[EDIT] Yes I know the obvious explanations are: manufacturers don't care about customers' need to upgrade, they want to differentiate their hardware, there is no incentive, etc. Economic and strategic reasons. But I cannot imagine anyone coming in from the engineering side would prefer the current messy situation -- it reminds me of the pre-EU decision to standardize power charging cables. The prevention of wastage from that one decision alone made the world better, and brands were able to simply carry on their business without mucking with that one interface.

What common swi-pos (swiping typos) do you consistent make?

Posted: 18 Sep 2016 11:44 AM PDT

I use Google keyboard. For me it's:

  • "after" almost always comes up first as "sheet"
  • "doesn't" becomes "didn't"
  • "there" becomes "they're" unless I'm trying to type "they're" in which case it becomes "their"
  • "done" becomes everything except done
  • for whatever dumb reason, "a" gets changed to "s" because writing random lowercase s's makes so much sense...

Edit: I'm recalling or coming across more:

  • similar to "a" to "s", many times my uppercase "I" gets changed to an uppercase "O"
