I'm posting this here for visibility because Google has not yet addressed the source of this battery drain, despite it being an assigned bug(s) in the issue tracker since Dev Preview 3 in May.

There have been many discussions and attempts to track down the drain since Monday, and we've all but ruled out a 'rogue' third-party app that may be behind it. I believe Google needs to make this a priority -- especially for a release that advertises "longer-lasting battery."

  • This is updating the mobile phone battery analysis I did one year ago. This time I went for a less cluttered design - hopefully easier to interpret.

  • Original content produced using GraphPad Prism and MS Excel.

  • Endurance rating data from GSM Arena, defined as battery life after one hour of 3G calls, one hour of video playback and one hour of web browsing. Data shown for all devices where endurance rating has been tested (n = 296). Note this includes tablets that can make calls, such as the 8,220 mAh Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 LTE.

  • For each phone endurance was also normalised to battery capacity, to illustrate how endurance can be affected by other factors and how this differs between brands.

Notes on statistical methods:

  • For comparison of 2011/12 and 2015/16, unpaired Student's t-tests (alpha 5%) were carried out for each brand that had >2 phones in both time periods (HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony). The Holm-Sidak method was used for multiple testing correction.

  • For the comparison of phones with li-ion and li-polymer batteries, an unpaired, two-tailed Student's t-test was carried out.

  • For the chipset data, ANOVA was performed with Tukey's post-hoc test (95% confidence). Phones with Exynos chipsets had significantly lower endurance than Apple, HiSilicon, Mediatek, NVIDIA and Qualcomm. Phones with Apple chipsets had significantly higher endurance/battery capacity than all others.
