[REQUEST] Concept Browser

Posted: 02 Jun 2016 06:25 AM PDT

I had this concept for an app which was a bookmarking system that uses the 'share' button in chrome

https://i.imgur.com/EexxoBG.png

The idea for this idea came out because of my frustration with other bookmarking apps. They are too simple, most of them are just only store a title plus the url and the tagging system on some others is not great (I really hate the tagging system there is no real structure) , the internet is a massive place with millions of pages there has to be a more structured way to bookmark pages. I came up with this concept app

https://i.imgur.com/EexxoBG.png

https://i.imgur.com/Na8Ly0A.png

https://i.imgur.com/aEXCFAx.png

The database stores the url, title, screenshot, a description, a country The tagging system is structured with 'topics' and 'format', topics representing topical interests, format being the format of the content format whether its article, blog, vlog, video, streaming, ect.. It also has a folder attribute for further compartmentalization. I believe the topic and format structure is better than a tagging system because users want to find bookmarks that fulfill a certain interest with some particular format

I also started working on a webview. The cool thing about this is that I also index the hostname so I can retrieve all bookmarks that are on the same website. This screenshot shows all bookmarks I have on the 'store.steampowered.com' website, its as simple as clicking on a button in the toolbar at it will show all bookmarks that on the same website

https://i.imgur.com/L7iuhe7.png

The custom webview also stores your history in the database, being a data hoarder I am adding ability to export to text file for archiving. The other thing about history which is cool is that there will be a 'condensed' version of web history that shows you the last time you accessed a particular website host rather then the full url path which is nice to have.

Most apps I have seen only allow you to select one tag at a time, the concept will have inclusive tag search, you can select as many tags any any bookmark with that tag will show up.

The reason I am posting this is because I want my ideas to be in public space and If you are a browser programmer or want to implement these idea its there for the taking since I don't have much time or resources finish this concept.

Another cool thing that would be cool for the bookmarking system is an attribute I called 'Asynchronous reminder' I like to read web comics and novels but I want to be reminded to visit that page in 1/2 months so I set the reminder. Next time I visit the app there is a page that shows all websites that have passed the reminder date in order of oldest first

Facebook is really very seriously trying to get people to use their app, messenger from browser is nearly unusable now with pop ups, and all the skin apps that used to do a good job are suffering from the changes to the mobile version now.

I can't download apps

Posted: 02 Jun 2016 06:29 AM PDT

I have an LG Risio, an I can't download android apps.

It's NOT an issue of connection, and it's not an issue of space (I have more than half a gig of available space). I have been able to download some apps, it's pretty random when it works, but 99% of the time, nothing.

The download starts, and it never actually stops. It just reaches a point where it "stalls". Never going further, and never stopping until I cancel it.

82 seems to be the magic number, because more often than not, it stops at 82%. It can go a little higher, or it can go as low as 63%. But ultimately, it stops.

What's the go to ad-blocker for non-root users right now?

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 09:35 AM PDT

There has been a lot of historical conversation around ad-blockers however there has not been much of a conversation around what is the current definitive blocker out there (for phones that are not rooted).

What are folks using?

Edit: running marshmallow

Edit 2: Thanks everyone, going to give Adguard a try for a bit, and then follow up with trying Netguard in a month, to see which I prefer.

[Q] Good Art/Graphic/Designing apps

Posted: 02 Jun 2016 05:24 AM PDT

I was android user for like 2 years with nexus 5 and decided to try iOS with their iphone 6 plus. While device itself is JUST OK, the thing that strikes me the most is definitely case of iOS apps. I can name like 10 great pro graphic ios apps with such good features that i wouldnt hesitate to call "photoshop basic" or something. Most of them if not all paid of course. And here comes my question. For those 2 years of being android user i have encountered only one app that is only close to what ios graphic apps deliver. Its called Facetune. Can anyone recommend me any good app like that and tell me if anything has changed since like... September last year? It would help me a bit in deciding whether to switch back to android which i think i overall prefer. Any photoshop fix/mix or sketchbook are not considered good graphic apps from the start - and if you think so, you havent used any ios one for sure.

Thanks to everyone replying :)

I think I need a new podcast app. Been using BeyondPod for five years and don't know what to try.

Posted: 02 Jun 2016 08:24 AM PDT

BeyondPod's ridiculous layout and lack of one very specific feature are making me want to try one of the more popular apps.

Here's the one thing I want BeyondPod to do that it can't: automatically append new episodes of specific podcasts to my existing playlist.

For instance, if a new episode of Your Mom's House or Doug Loves Movies is released, I want that episode stuck to the end of my existing, 20+ track long podcast. BeyondPod does not have this feature.

BeyondPod does the following that I really like:

  • automatically refreshes entire podcast library and downloads new episodes on a schedule (mine updates at 7AM before I leave for work)
  • has a simple category pane where you can custom sort your podcasts
  • has a feed that displays all podcast episodes by release date, can be filtered by category

So that's it, I need those features, plus the ability to automatically append new downloaded episodes to the playlist. What should I get? Thanks in advance.

The latest Google Chrome update has removed merged tabs and apps feature

Posted: 02 Jun 2016 08:12 AM PDT

Chrome version 51.0.2704.77 has removed the merged tabs and apps feature that was introduced with Lollipop.

This had already been seen in beta/dev versions of Chrome for a while and it has now come to the standard release.

Alternative to Signal Private Messenger?

Posted: 02 Jun 2016 01:28 AM PDT

I am loving everything about Signal and have been using it for about 2 months now but it is missing a functionality that I use quite often - sending voice messages. Digging through Signal's feature/bug logs reveal that it was available before but was removed because it apparently crashes the iOS counterpart. And thus, I am setting off for the journey of a new private messaging app with my loved ones.

Below are a few features that I NEED to have, and WANT to have:

NEED:

  1. End to end encryption for all messages, media and metadata.
  2. Taken photos/videos/voices are not accessible by other apps in the phone (even Telegram doesn't do this for their secret chat, which I think is stupid)
  3. Ability to send and receive voice messages
  4. Password or fingerprint lock

WANT:

  1. Desktop client
  2. Voice/video calls (Signal's implementation is shitty though)
  3. Quick reply from notification
  4. Emoji support

As you can see, Signal ticks all the boxes except for sending voice messages. It seems like Threema fulfils my NEED but do not fulfil my WANT - I would have tried it if there's a free trial, or I could just pay and try it out, and refund it if I dislike it. I have also had a look into Tox, with an Android client called Antox. Photos taken are accessible by other apps (shows up in gallery app), and it doesn't compress the photos - 2MB per photo can kill data pretty quickly!

Anyone has any idea on what other apps that may fulfil my requirement?

Alternative to Feedly

Any suggestions on a replacement app? New permissions are unnecessary (phone call info for an RSS collector/reader?). I'm looking for something that can long-press save to Pocket or similar.

Request: Free Airdroid App

Posted: 02 Jun 2016 03:52 AM PDT

Hey there,

I recently noticed that the Airdroid app has a cap of 10 mb unless you upgrade. I'm pretty sure this is a new thing but regardless, I can't afford the upgrade right now and plugging the android in via USB isn't working on my laptop.

Does anyone know of a free app which provides a similar service to airdroid? I need to throw large audio files onto my phone and it sucks I canne do it.

[REQUEST] Cloud-integrated file manager

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 08:24 PM PDT

Hey, so I'm looking for exactly what the title says.

I've been using ES File Manager for a long time, but I'm starting to get sick of its layout and appearance. I've checked out Solid Explorer, because I hear so much about it, but there's no cloud options for it. I've also looked at Asus's file manager, but for some reason it doesn't want to add my Google Drive, which might be an issue with Android N.

I use Google Drive and OneDrive primarily. Any recommendations?

Edit: apparently I'm blind and/or didn't think to look under an option called "storage options" in Solid Explorer. Thanks guys. Thought it was weird that it had no cloud options.

Media Remote for Windows PC

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 09:48 PM PDT

App Link

Media Remote is an application which let's you control popular media players on your PC. VLC player, Windows media player, iTunes for windows and Youtube player (all of these have obviously no association with us and their owners own the rights to these) are some of the supported players by default while we are also working to let you add your own media players.

Media remote is designed for when you want to watch a movie or video or playlist of any media on your PC but you want to be free of keyboard and mouse. You can either be relaxing far away from your PC or working on something else and still control the media playback on your PC.
