Best desktop option for SMS via Textra?

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 11:41 AM PDT

As of now, AirDroid has serious issues with Textra compatibility. For the most part, messages sent on phones do not show up on the AirDroid desktop client.

Are any other remote SMS applications better alongside Textra?

Thanks

Will a dark (non-black) app theme use less battery than a white theme on an AMOLED display?

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 12:28 PM PDT

What I'm saying is, does a dark theme that's not necessarily fully black, use less battery than a white screen? I always assumed that it was either black where the pixels are off, saving you battery, or the pixels were on and it didn't matter what color they were cause it would use the same battery if it's on at all.

But I've heard people say that white themes are "like kryptonite" for AMOLED screens, which seems to imply it uses more battery to display white pixels than other colors? And in that case, would a dark non-AMOLED theme use less battery than a white theme?

Android System ~30% on several phones with different ROMs and SIM cards. Is my Google Account corrup? (Or am I cursed?)

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 01:12 PM PDT

Hi,

I have an issue for over a year now. I am feeling kind of cursed. I try to explain my situation without too much detail.

I have a Honor 6 smartphone, after a few weeks my battery time got terrible. From 6h SoT (screen-on-time), I am now at ~2.5hrs on average. Since then, I have this battery draining thing on EACH phone.

I thought my phone was corrupt, so I ordered another Honor from Amazon (different model). I set up my Google account and installed WhatsApp. After a few full-charges, I was looking at my battery time: same terrible thing. People were getting ~7hrs SoT, my average was 2-3hrs.

I thought maybe Huawei made some mistakes with the Honor models, so I tried a OnePlus device. Guess what? Same issue.

I switched my network providers a few times. So it's not a SIM card related problem.

Symptoms of my problem: - On several devices, sim cards, android versions - App usage of Android System is at least ~30% battery - Screen brightness around 30% auto brightness - LTE, GPS/Location, Bluetooth always disabled (I don't use these) - Battery drain while screen off: 3-5% per hour! - SoT around 50% of the values other people have (on the OnePlus I got 3hrs instead of 6, Honor devices 2.5 - 3.5 instead of 5-7)

Screenshot examples: screenshot1 and screenshot2

Anyone have a clue? I spent too much time with rooting, factory resetting, researching, etc. - now I have no idea any more.

Thanks in advance!

I'm an iPhone user and I am thinking about switching to an Android phone.

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 09:07 AM PDT

I have been an iPhone user for a very long time. ( I know that there is an FAQ but I wanted to be a bit more specific) Since my iPhone is already a bit old I was thinking about buying one of the newer iPhones, but then a strange thought popped up: " What about Android ?" And the longer I was thinking about it, the more I liked the thought. An open operating system, switching your battery, easy file-transfer and not having limited memory are a HUGE plus for me. There aren't actually a lot of things holding me back. But there are still a few things that make me wanna stay with iPhone:

  1. Siri: I know Siri is just a gimmick, but I am actually using her everyday. I know its just lazy but its just so much easier telling your phone to set an alarm instead of doing it yourself. Friends have told me that there is something like Siri for Android devices, but they told me it is pretty bad.

  2. iMessage/FaceTime: My WHOLE family has an iPhone. And since my grandparents and brother live in a different country, its cheaper and easier to just send them an iMessage or call them on FaceTime.

  3. Security: The good part about iOS not being an open system like Android is that you have a very secure phone. Its hard to get a "virus"/ to get hacked.

  4. Stable operating system: During the time that I have an iPhone I've rarely seen my phone lag/ dropping FPS. On the other hand I've seen a lot of my friends experience lag on their Android.

  5. There are sooooo many Android phones: Samsung, Google...etc. I have no idea what to choose. If you could name some phones that run smoothly, have a camera that is =/better than an iPhone 5s and have a battery that you switch with ease, I would be very grateful.

These are probably the only things holding me back from getting an Android. I may sound biased but I am actually fairly neutral in the whole iOS vs. Android debate. Its just that I am used to iPhone. Please try to convince me and maybe "counter" the things that are holding me back. Thank you so much for answering. :)

edit: I dont know what exactly happened to the structure of the text after posting it. I'm sorry for that.

Is there any way to encrypt files on a Linux machine and view them on an Android device?

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 01:04 PM PDT

I'm running Android 6.0 and Arch Linux, if that helps. Basically I need a way to read/mount encrypted files on my Android device that were encrypted on my Linux machine. I can change the encryption format/software on my Linux machine if necessary.

Work is giving me a free Android... but which one do I choose?

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 02:50 PM PDT

So currently my work has us issued the Kyocera Brigadier on Verizon (which is a POS) and so now they are upgrading us to one of the following phones:

-Samsung Galaxy Note Edge -Samsung Galaxy S7 (32GB) -Samsung Galaxy Note 5

I'm not too familiar with the newest Androids as I personally have an iPhone and only use my Brigadier for work only.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm trying to build a retro gaming console that I could use on long flights, so the options that include networking/wifi would not be viable.

I just got the LG G5 a little more than a week ago and everything was working fine until today. Suddenly, my phone goes straight to voicemail when someone tries to call me and it says that I'm not accepting phone calls at this time. I don't remember changing anything to make it do this. I tried google with no luck so hopefully someone here can help me.

Removing Clock From Lock Screen

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 02:05 PM PDT

I Have an Asus ZenPad 8.0 running on Android 5.0.2. I am trying to remove the clock from the lock screen so when I wake my device up, I only see the my wallpaper. I would like to not use any apps because I have to use the "After Unlock" app as well which only works with the default lock screen.

Any ideas of how I can go about this?

[Rooted] iOS Emoji Not Appearing in App Despite Many Attempts

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 01:46 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm hoping that I can get a bit of a hand with explaining why I am having troubles with iOS emoji appearing within Naver's Line Messenger App and other parts of the system as well. I am running MIUI 7 (v.6.4.15), based on Kitkat 4.4.4 on a Samsung SGS4 (i9505), which is rooted as well.

Originally I had attempted to use Emoji Switcher with root access to change everything up, which appears to have worked to some degree (if I go to emojipedia.org I can see every emoji up to and including Unicode 9.0).

With that being said though however, I always seem to be missing emoji in messages as they usually show up as blanks, and if they are placed after a question mark for example, it's nearly impossible to realize that there may be an emoji there. The only time when I am able to notice is if someone uses one, and then inserts more text or punctuation after it as there is a blatant space there.

Attempting to do a little testing with friends, I had a friend of mine with an iPhone who also uses Line Messenger to send me some emoji. I first sent a couple using the Android emoji, which appeared as iOS emoji for him... that was good. iOS emojis which are inbound though messed up as predicted: the "non Line emoji" aka. device's emoji (iOS in this case) show as just blanks. From this point to get an idea of what they are, I usually copy messages (which include the blank emoji if I can tell they are there) and paste them into another app (ex. Google Translate) to see if emojis are present and what they are.

Hopefully someone will be able to give me some insight as to what the problem is... for example is it simply that the Line Messenger app itself isn't developed well and thus causes these problems (despite being the current version), or perhaps it's because I'm on a Kitkat-based ROM or MIUI, or maybe there are other reasons???

I'm really lost with this, even after trying so hard to find resources on my own, so I would love to have as much guidance as possible!

Thank you in advance for your help!

Never had an Android before, considering the Nexus 6P. Have a few questions about it

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 07:46 AM PDT

I currently have a Lumia 920 and before that I had an iPhone. I've never had an Android before but I am very interested in trying one out. The model that interests me the most is the Nexus 6P. However I just read that Huawei announced today that they will be releasing a successor to that phone later in 2016. Is it likely that the price on the 6P will drop significantly when the new model comes out? If I bought a Nexus today, how long would I likely get out of it before it becomes obsolete? For reference, the phone I have right now (which I bought in 2014) is already considered obsolete because the latest OS isn't officially supported on it.

Also, I wanted to ask about rooting. How does it work on Androids? Can you brick the phone by doing it? When I had an iPhone it was super easy to jailbreak using redsnow. Is there a similar program that exists for Androids? Thanks guys.

Samsung S3 Boots to NY Times app after factory reset?

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 01:36 PM PDT

I was having some issues with my venerable old Galaxy S3 so I decided to factory reset it. However, something must have gone wrong and now half the time it boots to a screen that looks like what it should after a factory reset but gets stuck after I put in my wifi password, and boots to the NY Times app (and only the app, the home button is useless) the other half.

It's my backup phone, I've had an LG G4 for the past year, but I'd still like to have it functional, what are my options? I'm open to CM or something like that, but I have absolutely no experience flashing roms, or even rooting for that matter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Still am not given an option to create the Google Now Weather Shortcut

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 09:41 AM PDT

So, a few months ago, Google pushed out a feature where you can create a quick shortcut to the Google Now Weather cards. Essentially, when you went into the weather card something popped up that gave an option to create the shortcut.

I don't remember ever getting asked to create this shortcut. I was thinking maybe it did, and I accidentally said no, or wasn't given the option, but I'd like to have this shortcut.

Does anybody know how to force Google Now to ask the question? Or if there is another way to get it? I'm on an AT&T Galaxy S5 (non rooted), and am currently using the Google Now Launcher.

Media volume automatically lowering itself

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 02:47 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm having a strange problem with my phone right now. It started a couple of days ago and I'm not sure what the cause could be (checked user profiles, sound options, do not disturb options, and individual app settings). Im running Android 6.0.1 with CyanogenOS ZNH0EAS2JK on my OnePlus One.

Whenever I plug in my headphones and try to listen to anything, the media volume slider pops up and automatically slides to 0. Even if I try to raise the volume and slide it back to where it was before, a second later it'll automatically slide itself back to 0. The only fix I've found is by using the hardware buttons to increase the volume. But that fix is only temporary because when I switch to a different song or video the slider automatically slides itself back to 0 again, forcing me to use the hardware buttons to raise the volume every time.

The problem is only when I plug my headphones in. I've tried playing a video or a song with black player, VLC, Quickpic, and Google play music but all have the same problem. But when I disconnect the headphones, the problem goes away.

This can get pretty annoying when listening to music since I have to raise the volume after every song if I want to use headphones (which I have to on transit). Thanks in advance!

Rooted - Now how do I 'start over'?

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 05:36 AM PDT

Hi,

So I got an S4 (Att with Locked BOotloader). Long story short, I rooted it and then figured out it had a locked bootloader. Now I realize my only option is safe strap and maybe Xposed modules, which is fine - but I want to 'start over'. How do I do that?

Sometimes when I bootup, I get a bootloop, so now every time I will have to boot using Odin (is that what it's called? PWR+Home+Vol Down).

Thanks

Widgets stop updating after a period of time.

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 07:06 AM PDT

I've got a Galaxy S7, and there are a handful of widgets I like to use on my home screens, including Google Now, but after a while, they'll stop updating. Google Now will stop displaying new cards, my step counter will stop incrementing in real time, and so on. The best thing I could find out in my research is that force stopping the Google app from the app manager will reset everything and get it to update in real time again...at least for a while. Is there a more permanent solution to this? Google Now and my other widgets lose a lot of their usefulness when they can't be relied on.

Friend's phone locked her out. Any way to get back in?

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 08:33 AM PDT

Friend I work with has Motorola smartphone with (I'm guessing) KitKat. She just changed her password last night, and even though she had to confirm her password twice, it's now not accepting the password to let her in.

She's tried to use her Google account to reset the password, and it says that it's not possible. It will locate the phone, it will make it ring, but password reset keeps failing.

She's tried to go through both Android and T-Mobile, and neither were very helpful. She has a large number of texts for work and cannot retrieve them.

Are there options that she can explore?

Edit: she's pretty sure her password is "lyricalsounds." I've tried numerous "accidental" misspellings in case she was able to misspell her password twice in a row.
