What's the use of rooting nowadays?

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 06:00 AM PST

I started to wonder this since I get almost all benefits of rooting without root now. I am NOT saying we shouldn't be allowed to root or unlock phone, but for normal users or those who don't need it can go about life without rooting their phones.

So, may I ask what's the use of rooting nowadays? You got

• systemwide adblock without root (DNS66)

• processors like SD 430,650 and 652 are very powerful and battery friendly

• underclocking and undervolting aren't needed with such chips as there is already lot of battery life

• permissions per app can be set now easily

• Greenify in its latest beta (3.0 build 5) allows wake-up cutoff for apps after granting permission via ADB shell via USB connected PC

• you can change a phone's looks via wallpaper, launcher and extra icon support that these launchers have

• screen resolution change doesn't need root

• good phones and good apps don't have security issues thus not needing exploit patching via root or latest ROM flashing

• Battery Historian can tell us apps and wakelock info with simple bugreport generating and submitting

• few reasons I may have missed...

Please tell me what all have I missed, and why I would really need root now.

How often do you use 'Now on Tap'? If you did was it useful?

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 03:59 PM PST

I have never used it and find ok google to be better than now on tap. In fact I forget its there half the time. What do you think?

What is your opinion on Android phones with 1 GB of RAM?

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 02:57 PM PST

Basically the title, would you ever consider one with 1GB RAM? As a backup phone maybe, or a gift?

Got Daydream to work on my 5X, might work on other Android 7.0 phones as well

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 05:41 PM PST

After some investigation, I've gotten the entire Daydream app (home screen and all!) to run on my 5X.

This is based on this suggestion.

Here's how I did it:

  • This requires root, Android 7.0, Google VR Services, and the Daydream app to all be installed on your phone. It also requires a compatible Daydream viewer and controller (I use a Cardboard viewer with the controller emulator running on an old device).
  • Using a root explorer app, navigate to /system/etc/permissions/handheld_core_hardware.xml. This is where the system features of your phone are listed.
  • Inside the file is the list of permissions, formatted as XML and nicely commented (as least on my 5X). Add the following lines into the root permissions tag:

<feature name="android.software.vr.mode" /> <feature name="android.hardware.vr.high_performance" />

  • They might even be mentioned and explained in the comments.
  • Reboot your device. You should be able to launch Daydream from the app.

I hope this is of any use to anyone who's tried to get this working previously.

EDIT: After doing this, all my Daydream apps are updating through the Play Store. It's also allowing me to download apps that previously were marked as incompatible.

Blu Life One X2 from WalMart

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 04:55 PM PST

Walmart online has this phone listed twice (I know the phone has two models) but the specs from both postings are the same. Would I be foolish to buy it for $150 expecting it to match the specs posted or am I setting myself up for a lengthy holiday returns process? Thanks!

Here it is for $150 https://www.walmart.com/ip/BLU-Life-One-X2-L0091UU-64GB-GSM-4G-LTE-Octa-Core-Smartphone-with-16MP-Camera-Unlocked-Gray/55175243

Here it is also for $220 https://www.walmart.com/ip/BLU-Life-One-X2-L0091UU-64GB-GSM-4G-LTE-Octa-Core-Smartphone-with-16MP-Camera-Unlocked-Gray/55175242

My take on the Moto Z Play, after ~10 days of use

Posted: 10 Dec 2016 03:29 AM PST

Hi everyone! So, all you've all probably read, the phone is quite good, with its very efficient SoC, amazing battery life, good software, blablabla... Yes, it is a good phone, but the better the phone I have in my hands, the pickier I seem to get, and I've noticed some aspects that, while I love the phone, disappoint me a little bit. Before I start, I want to say that I'm coming from a Nexus 5 (and before that a Nexus 4), which was starting to get a little old, especially in terms of battery life.

The camera: Obviously, it's better, as the Nexus's one was pretty terrible. Yet I'm not amazed by it, there are lots of daytime indoor situations with pretty good lighting where I feel like it could make less noisy shots...

The software: Lenovorola did a good job on that, Android is mostly stock with a couple of new features. But it seems to me these features are not nearly as customizable as I'd want them to be: Moto Gestures (or Actions, I can't remember) are well thought, but where's the option to add your own? Same with Moto Display: what If I want the weather on there, or the clock higher up on the display? I get that I could probably change it if I rooted the device, but I'd like to keep my warranty on it just in case... Also, security updates: latest patch is the August 2016 one, and compared to the Nexus phones these seem to truly take longer...

Build quality: Here's the "worst" part of the phone for me. While the front glass is very, very nice (scratch resistant, oleophobic coated material provides a very pleasant experience, but for how long?), the back one is... disappointing, to say the least. I have kept the phone covered with the Style Shell (which is quite nice to hold, but perhaps a bit slippery), but the back panel already shows signs of wear. It seems that having the shell rub very slightly onto the back of the phone (magnetic connectors aren't perfect) is enough to scratch it. Lenovorola chose to not use Gorilla Glass on the back, despite apparently telling so to people via customer support or forums. It seems there's no clear answer to that question from them, but from my own experience I can tell you that the back is just regular glass, no coating, no scratch resistance. Which brings me onto the next part of the phone, the sides. This is where you realize that while aluminium is a pretty, heat conductive and light material, it may not be adapted for phones, as it has very poor scratch and wear resistance: I've never dropped the phone, yet there's already a small dent at the top that formed when I set it face down on my bedside table! I can already hear you screaming at your screen: "Buy a case and stop whining!", but I simply cannot seem to find a good one. I live in France which is a little bit limiting in terms of choice, but I can't seem to find a product that can protect both the sides and the protruding camera without making the handset look like a rubber tire. Because yes, the camera glass is the same material as the back panel, meaning it needs lots of care to not get damaged too quickly. I bought a skin, I don't know if it's going to be of any use, anyways I haven't received it yet so I can't say whether or not it could be considered an alternative. In the end, in terms of resistance, the plastic body of the Nexus 5 seemed like it was more durable, surprisingly...

To other owners, I'd like to know if you've encountered such issues or if it's just me! And to the rest, I'll try and answer any questions you might have.

TL; DR: Good phone, disappointing camera, software customization, and build quality (sides and back).

PSA: IFTTT is still the only service with access to the Google Assistant Direct Actions API

Posted: 09 Dec 2016 05:06 PM PST

Yes, the Google Assistant API was made public yesterday but only the Conversation Actions part of it. The Direct Actions part is still not available for everyone to use.

As far as I can tell this is the difference between "Conversation Actions" and "Direct Actions":

Conversation Actions involve talking to a third party agent, meaning that you start a conversation with an assistant that's NOT Google Assistant. It'll even change the voice you hear talking back to you. This means that you have to somehow invoke this agent with a phrase like "ok google talk to personal chef" like seen in this example. Think of it like going into an app where you can then "navigate" with its own voice commands.

These actions have a way to be called directly though, with a phrase like "ok google ask personal chef for a chicken soup recipe". They call these Deep Link Invocations and they are a good way of getting straight to point and only slightly more awkward than direct actions.

Direct Actions are not yet public but it seems that is what IFTTT has access to. You can apply for early access right now, but you can't access the API itself. It looks like these will be able to add commands to the Google Assistant itself. For example, on IFTTT you can add a command like "Turn on my TV" and you'll be able to say it directly to the Google Assistant like "ok google turn on my tv"

You can even tell these are different by looking at the permissions each service needs.

For example API.AI works with conversation actions and needs this permission from you: View and manage your Google Assistant voice commands, dialog and grammar

IFTTT on the other hand requests this permission: Manage your Google voice commands

So there you have it. I found it very interesting that IFTTT would get such an early access to an API that even now isn't available for everyone. Another sign of Google acquiring IFTTT in the future? ;)
