How important is the headphone jack to you?

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 03:21 AM PDT

After the news confirming that the next iPhone will not have a headphone jack, i was wondering how important is it to you?

To me it is very important, i use it multiple times during the day, i dont think i would have a good experience on android without it.

Where should I start with app development?

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 11:07 AM PDT

I currently know nothing about coding or app design, but I would really like to start learning. I have quite a bit of downtime at work and want to at least get my foot in the door instead of watching Youtube / browsing Reddit all day. Does anyone have any pointers or leads on where to start learning the fundamental building blocks of development?

Reboot loop

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 10:46 AM PDT

I have a htc one m7 and it just started doing the reboot loop everyone is talking about. I think it is completely died, but the green light notification is blinking slowly. When i plugged it up to the wall an orange light starts blinking while the green light is still on. it shows the battery icon with the lightening bolt in the middle but it just start rebooting again. I want to know if changing the battery and power button will fix my problem or should i give up all hope.

I have tried holding the power and volume buttons down but nothing. The boot window used to come up but before I could select an option the phone would restart again.

Just did an factory update; it didn't work

Is there an app which emulates keystrokes at my computer?

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 07:34 AM PDT

I want my phone next to my computer when working, and everytime I want to insert some predefined text (or keyboard shortcut) I just press a button on my phone.

For example, I want to write an Email, where I need to write "Dear Mister .... ", I just push a predefined button on my phone and my computer generates the required keystrokes.

I have a google nexus 6 and I'm currently on the android beta program 7.0... how do I update to the main final version?

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 04:13 PM PDT

Like title says, I opted in for the program and it updated my phone to 7.0, but only the beta version. The final version has been out for a while now but whenever I search for updates, it says I am updated. If I want to update to the actual update, will I have to revert?

200 MB of device memory and 3 GB space on SD card is apparently not enough to install a 2.5 MB app

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 04:01 PM PDT

Can somebody explain to me what witchery is this? I'm trying to install an app from Google Play, the app weights 2.5 MB, I have 198 MB free space on the device and 3 GB free space on the SD, and yet it throws up with that "not enough storage space" error each time.

Did someone invented a compression method that can compress a 200+ MB app into a 2.5 MB installer when I was AFK?

Different methods to move apps to the external SD card?

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 03:27 PM PDT

I know about the obvious Link2SD but it always makes the app malfunction on my device (HTC Desire 626s, 6.0, running a Samsung Evo 32gb UHS-1), Apps2SD does the same thing

Mount as Internal works, but the internal storage still fills with games that download files to data/data/app folder (such as Brave Frontier or Dokkan Battle) and once that happens I can't download any apps and I get the low storage notification

Am I screwed or there are other ways? The internal storage on this thing is awful, I can barely fit 4 games

Android's SD card shortcomings or just my Moto X Play?

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 06:26 AM PDT

I have a Moto X Play running marshmallow and I bought a model with very little internal storage because it has an sdcard slot.

My first problem is that performance of apps that are on the sd card are horrible and have lag spikes, mainly facebook and messenger. I know this can be caused by a slow micro sd card, but I bought this card which says it is a class 10 with up to 85mb/s... is that still too slow to run apps efficiently? if so can anyone recommend me a good sd card?

My second problem is that the vast majority of apps refuse to install or be moved to the sd card... what the heck. this kinda defeats the purpose of the SD card slot in my opinion.

Are these universal problems with android or just my Moto X Play?

Getting a OnePlus One to sideload

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 03:10 PM PDT

Hi all,

I've been running around and around to try and get my android sideloading with twrps all night. So I boot into recovery, go to advance > ADB Sideload. I check to clear both cache options and then side load. My PC detects that a device is connected, but it does not recognise it as an ADB device.

I've followed several tutorials about installing the samsung drivers, and the google usb drivers, but I can't seem to get it to work. I have both sets of drivers downloaded and installed. When I go to my devices and try to update the driver for the one plus, it just fails to find drivers every time. It doesn't matter if I locate the folder they are in. Try searching the web. Or selecting from a list (in the list there is not option for ADB device, or google).

I'm pretty much out of ideas now, but I think all I need to do to get this working is to have much device show up when I use the "adb devices" command. I'm actually unrooting my phone, when I rooted it, I seemed to remember you had to do something weird with the oneplus one to get it to appear.

Edit: To add to this. I just tried fast booting, and it shows up in the fast boot devices.

Very underwhelmed by iPhone 7, any way I can rent/test a Galaxy or similar?

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 03:05 PM PDT

Hello! So my plan was to upgrade to a iPhone 7 this month, but oh my god was that underwhelming. Is there any way to test a Galaxy S7 or something similar for a week or so? I asked Verizon and returning a device is $40 and then I wouldn't have a phone due to me going to be turning it into Verizon to get money back. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Edit: I am wondering this because I have never used a modern Android phone and am not sure if it will work well for me.

Silent mode without vibrate?

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 02:31 PM PDT

When I put my phones ringer volume all the way down it automatically switches to vibrate, I don't want that. How do i get it to be silent and without vibrate.

Cause now it also vibrates for apps that I turned vibrate off for, like Google hangouts chat. When the ringer volume is up it doesn't vibrate, but with ringer volume down it vibrates on every message.

Easiest way to 'automate' backups

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 10:27 AM PDT

So, for years now, I've always dreaded factory resets. Even more so now that factory resets fully wipe your phone, including pictures and music. Unless I'm totally out of the loop, most advice I see recommends backing up all of your stuff in different ways. My personal checklist is to:

Manually go through my device folders (pictures.. many different separate folders, videos, music, documents) and copy/paste them to my desktop, to make sure everything is backed up -I do this as there are many pictures and videos I don't want sync'd to the cloud.. in addition to music and documents that don't auto-sync to servers like Photos

Sync accounts/contacts/etc

Back up messages (whether via sms backup tool or built in cloud backup)

Sync photos to drive

Backup Nova settings

All in all, this all probably takes an hour or so plus time to restore. I've looked before, and have never found a Windows app or service that automates this process. I just want to be able to plug my phone in and hit a backup button, much like you would with an iPhone.

Is there yet an app to do this? Or a custom script or tasker that could be written? I just want to say, when plugged in, backup these folders, sync these accounts, etc. There really isn't much that has to be done, but with the current state of the system, it's incredibly clunky and segregated. And this is for someone fairly tech savvy. Someone like my girlfriend would rather go a year with a barely usable phone instead of labor through the scary factory reset process. I'd love to just set up a backup tool for her. Hopefully someone can point me to something I'm missing.

Google Now Launcher Bug? Samsung and Google app icons swapped

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 10:26 AM PDT

https://imgur.com/gallery/ZzTFg

Verizon Galaxy S7, not rooted. Android 6.0.1.

My Google calendar appears to be using the Samsung calendar icon (green). Any idea why or how to fix it? Is this a Google Now Launcher bug? I've been using Google Now Launcher for quite a while and it just happened the other day. I haven't messed with any icon packs or anything like that. There was a security update a few days ago but other than that I can't think of what could have changed recently. Also, the Samsung contacts app appears to be using the Google contacts icon even though I don't have the app installed. The green calendar icon triggers me and can't figure out what is causing the issue. I've tried clearing the cache and reinstalling. Tried rebooting. Tried disabling the Samsung calendar.

SuperSU "Full Unroot" - phone doesn't boot after unrooting

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 01:34 PM PDT

Hi all, I'm running cyanogen os on a one plus one. I recently decided to unroot my phone. SuperSU is what I used as part of my rooting process, so I decided to use that to do the unroot. Everything is backed up, but after the app reported it had unrooted correctly and needed to reboot, the phone doesn't get past the cyanogen loading screen (despite being left for over an hour).

I've reset it multiple times, and booted into recovery mode. Cleared the cache and reset to factory settings, but no matter what I do, I can't get it past the loading screen when I boot into system.

Any advice welcome. I'm thinking I might just need to wipe it with a new cyanogen image, but I have no idea how to do that.

Where do I find pure Google roms, and instructions to install it?

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 01:26 PM PDT

Thank you all;

I have acquired a Zenpad S 8 (Z580CA) and have seen many instructions on how to root it, but zero on where to find the google (marshmallow/nougat) images and load them.

I checked the stickied FAQ but found that useless as well - would anyone be able to point me to some how-tos?

Linking Android phones for a performance boost

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 12:55 PM PDT

I have two Samsung galaxy avant phones that are no longer in use. I use one for gaming, emulators, and audiobooks. However, it is far from a fast android machine. So, I was wondering if there was any way to link the one phone to the other one, through either something like a double microUSB cable, or through a wire that links the SD card readers (for better speeds?), and force one of the phones to use the circuitry, ram, processor, gpu, etc. of both phones to enhance performance in general? (sort of like RAID but not just for storage)

Not sure if this is feasible but figured I would ask.

USB-C video output

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 12:42 PM PDT

Will any Android device with a USB-C port be able to output video through that port (assuming the use of some sort of adapter/dongle to convert to HDMI)? Or are there other requirements of the USB-C implementation that only make this possible on some devices?
