Apple exec explains why iMessage did not come to Android

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 07:32 AM PDT

Interesting note from this week's Walt Mossberg column on The Verge:

When I asked a senior Apple executive why iMessage wasn't being expanded to other platforms, he gave two answers. First, he said, Apple considers its own user base of 1 billion active devices to provide a large enough data set for any possible AI learning the company is working on. And, second, having a superior messaging platform that only worked on Apple devices would help sales of those devices — the company's classic (and successful) rationale for years.

Mossberg is really well-connected with Apple and respected for his writing in general, so I'd take this at face value.

Looks like we didn't get iMessage for the same reason everyone predicted- iMessage is less of a standalone service and more of a tool to sell iPhones.

What the Daydream spec can tell us about the next Nexus (and other phones in latter-half 2016)

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 12:33 PM PDT

TL;DR, once we make reasonable assumptions about the other components in the device, once we consider the Daydream spec, we can derive exactly what type of screen the next Nexus will have--often one of the biggest hardware unknowns with a new device.

I've been sitting on this one for a while. I was originally inspired by this article from the Verge, which made a lot of sense--VR is the natural application for a 4k smartphone display. However, the time for 4k smartphone displays is not here yet, and the following paragraphs will outline why. I'm only considering the Nexus for now because it's pretty much guaranteed to be Daydream-ready, but my argument can apply to any potential Daydream phone. We don't know a whole lot of specifics about the spec yet, but what we do know is very telling.

First, the major baseline assumption: Given the trend with Nexus phones and the greater phone market generally (along with an iffy leak), it's fairly safe to assume the flagship Nexus will have a high-end Snapdragon, most likely the Snapdragon 820. I'm assuming we won't get an 801-to-805-like upgrade: at this time of year in 2014, we already knew officially about the 805, whereas we've heard nothing yet this year about something above the 820.

With that established, let's consider Daydream. The critical points are echoed in both of these articles:

Future phones (available starting this fall) will be considered Daydream-ready if they meet certain requirements: a high-power SoC that can provide a quality experience at 60 frames per second, a low-persistence display (read: OLED only), low-latency, and high-quality sensors are all required for certification.

The crucial detail there is 60fps. In order for the next Nexus to be Daydream-ready, it will have to run graphically-intense applications at 60fps consistently. Keeping in mind our prior assumption, we know about the 820's graphical performance from real-world benchmarks done in reviews. AnandTech's LG G5 review shows both implementations of the Snapdragon 820 (in the S7 and G5) performing around 30fps onscreen at best in GFXBench at 2560x1440. Granted, this isn't representative of the performance of a Daydream-ready phone, considering Google has stated that most current phones are "unlikely" to qualify. However, it's hard to imagine any changes Google makes, even with the special "high-performance" VR mode, would result in much more than a 2x performance improvement on the same hardware (that's already a huge jump as it is). Thus, while it may be possible to hit 60fps at 2k resolution, there just isn't much room to go beyond that and still be Daydream-compatible. This effectively eliminates the possibility of a 4k display, and we can conclude that the next Nexus' screen resolution will be, at most, 2560x1440.

The other comment in the article (which was not official) about "OLED-only" does make sense, at least in the context of the Nexus devices. They've been doing AMOLED for two years, and there's not much reason to stop, especially because it's now cheaper than LCD anyway.

For me, this is very good news. We've hit the point where 2k displays are no longer a detriment to performance and battery life, like they were in the early days with the LG G3 and Nexus 6. Any upgrade to a 4k display takes us right back there--UI smoothness would drop considerably, battery life would take a hit, and the user experience would generally be greatly impacted. To not have to worry about that on the upcoming round of fall flagships is nice.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and to get a discussion going!

[Dev] Dash for reddit beta

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 01:55 PM PDT

tl;dr: Android reddit client, very complete but some things are missing (that's why it's beta), need your feedback, has ads with one time purchase to remove them, 33% discount during the first week, the link is at the bottom.

Hi reddit,

For the last few months I've been developing my first Android app. I thought a reddit client would be challenging but at the same time would cover several important topics that I would need to learn. So I would like to introduce you Dash for reddit.

I wanted to make a client that I would personally enjoy using. Add features that I like that are present in other clients, but improve in areas that they are lacking.

It currently supports the normal reddit features like post/comment browsing, voting, commenting, etc. It is fairly complete however, it is still missing some features that I consider important. It also needs more testing, specially in those special Samsung devices. For this reason I prefer to consider it beta. So please have some comprehension if the app crashes, slows down or if some feature is missing. I would really like your feedback so I can improve it.

I would also like to ask for your input regarding the reddit apps that you currently use. Why you use them and what you like about them.

Eventually I will add small tips when you start the app for the first time. I just want to highlight one that maybe it's not very obvious. To change the subreddit you press the toolbar/actionbar, like this image shows. You can use the input box that appears to filter your subscriptions or search for other subreddits.

One more thing, the app supports an embebbed browser in the comments, similar to Relay. As far as I know, it is the second reddit client to have this. You can also turn this off and use the normal browser (Chrome Custom Tabs/Internal browser/External browser). And check the settings, it has many different ones, you can customize it more to your liking.

It has ads but you can pay a one time fee to remove them. During this first week it will have a 33% discount.

Here's the Play Store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kakai.reddit.dash

Check the app subreddit, /r/dashforreddit, there you can discuss everything related with Dash, including submitting bugs.

Thanks!

State of MIPS, plus some statistics

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 01:09 PM PDT

How many MIPS-based Android devices are out there? Not many.

I've published an app to Google Play with MIPS as the only supported architecture, and that gave me 5 supported device models.

This does not show the actual amount of devices in the hands of users, but still gives you the rough estimate.

There are 11571 ARMv7A-based, 359 x86-based, and 478 ARMv5-based device models.

Almost all x86-based device models, except for two, have a compatibility layer to run apps built for ARM architecture.

I've counted devices with any screen size, Android 2.3 and newer (Froyo is dead for me).

Imgtec (MIPS owner/licensor) only provides Android 5.1.1 sources for their architecture. This means - no new MIPS devices.

So it looks like MIPS is dead, ARMv5 is not quite dead yet if you're targeting Android 2.3, and x86 is strong, with few popular device models from Asus, Lenovo and Samsung.

Screen protectors

Posted: 16 Jun 2016 11:12 AM PDT

TL;DR: Yes or no to screen protectors

So ever since my first android phone - Xperia Pro I ditched screen protectors I've been using with my older phones with shitty old screens, but lately I rediscovered screen protection - this time because I found out that screen protectors are great at keeping your screen fingerprint-free. So what /r/Android thinks about screen protectors in 2016?
