Any way to clear notifications permanently?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 01:22 PM PDT

I recently converted from iOS to Android with a Galaxy S7. Overall, I am enjoying the experience. The flexibility of Android is a huge perk over iOS, however there is a definitely a cost by way of bloat, sluggish performance, and a lack of user-friendliness in certain areas.

There is just one thing that has really been bugging me, and that is notifications. Is there any way to clear them permanently, other than opening every single app for the respective notification? I pull down my notification bar and hit the "clear all" button, but the notifications simply reappear several minutes later. Thanks! I am definitely excited to dive into the world of the Android OS.

What to do with an old tablet

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 10:10 AM PDT

I have an Galaxy Tab 10.1 (P7510) and I managed to get 4.4.4 Installed on it (via this guide) but a lot of apps aren't working (Chrome, Netflix, etc). I'm not really upset by this because it was a hand-me-down from a friend, but I was wondering if there was something different I could do with this thing to make it more usable. What have you done with your old tablet?

What Android manufacturer has most favorable policy about rooting and custom ROM?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 11:35 AM PDT

I am coming from the iOS world, sick and tired of the continual need for security researchers to discover obscure bugs just so users can obtain root (known as jailbreaking in iOS circles) and Apple constantly patching the exploits. What Android manufacturer has most favorable policy about rooting and custom ROM? Are there any manufacturers who are not fighting our rooting and installing of ROMs and instead welcome tinkering? Google? Any others? I am interested in tablets and phones.

Restrict permissions on android 5.0 WITH root

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 11:07 AM PDT

Hey!

So i have recently rooted my galaxy s5 (G900F) with the stock firmware. And now i'm looking for a way to restrict permissions to certain apps. I tried googling, but to be honest it's either android 6.0 links coming up, or apps with 2 star reviews in the play store.

My "Notifications" tab is missing.

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 11:54 AM PDT

Hello everyone, So I just got the LG G5 with sprint, and it's been really great so far, but the other day it stopped giving me notification alerts. I thought that maybe it was a volume thing so i went into settings to adjust it there. When in the settings menu under "Sound" there's a "Volume" which there I can adjust it, but it still isn't working. There is also a tab that says "Ringtones" but the one that should say "Notifications" is missing. does anyone know how to fix this? i searched google and it doesn't seem anyone else has had this problem.

Suggestions to improve performance of Nexus 7 (2012)?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 12:04 PM PDT

I have my old Nexus 7 running on 6.0.1, but find it's running super slow. Performance isn't that great, but it's mediocre for book reading. Rather not shell out ~$500+ for either the newer Nexus 7 or even Nexus 9 just yet. Any suggestions on what I can do to make it just as fast as it was before updating it? I read the Lollipop update kills the performance, but 6.0.1 is supposed to increase the performance.

Brand new S5 Neo struggling badly with games

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 10:29 AM PDT

I'll start by saying, I realize that there are probably better places to put this, but I couldnt find them. Anyways onto the topic/problem at hand.

I recently bought an Android S5 Neo to replace my broken S4, runs great and I'm loving it, but the problem is whenever I play games, it chuggs, HARD. I have no idea why a phone that's pound for pound better than my last one struggles where my S4 was smoothly running. I've gotten rid of bloat ware, there is nothing but the OS and a few small Apps I installed on the phone, I removed widgets, clear the ram, clear my cache and close programs I'm not using but it does nothing. Also the lowest I could get the RAM usage down to is ~55% after reseting the device. Its also on version 5.1.1.

And to cap it all off, the games I'm having struggles running are: Kingdom Hearts Unchained X - Low frames, textures load in while I'm playing, menus are fine though. Have reinstalled twice.

Miitomo - Crashes before I can even log into my Nintendo Account.

So please, I hope the much more knowledgeable people here can provide me with a solution, or if someone is willing to download the 1 GB + that Kingdom Hearts is, they can test it on their S5 Neo. Thank you in advanced.

Best Android iPad Air 2 or iPad pro competitor?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 10:00 AM PDT

Apple's high end tablets offer an abundance of internal storage space and the cellular models work with all the major US carriers without having to buy a device specifically for one carrier. This is good because it is easy to change carriers.

What Android tablet is the closest competitor on these attributes and is also rootable? Please mention version or model of product especially if the answer is to buy an international version, then which has the major US cellular bands? For androids, the space provided by the SD card may be included when considering storage capacity.

Youtube app refreshes when minimised and then maximised?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 09:50 AM PDT

A friend who has a HTC Desire has a problem. When she's watching a youtube video via the youtube app and receives a text message or a call apparantly the text message app takes priority and the youtube app gets minimised. When she then brings up the youtube app again the video starts over. It's as if the hole page refreshes.

Any idea how to fix this?

I have tried everything. Why won't Google Play Store work?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 11:02 AM PDT

I haven't been able to update apps or download new ones for over a month now. I've cleared caches/data, force stopped, power cycled...all the usual steps to fix this issue. Still, if I try to get a new app or update one I already have, it stays on "Downloading..." for a while, then throws an error (596 I think? I can't recall.) Phone is a Nexus 6P, unrooted, with the Android N Beta update. Please, someone help me. I have almost 100 apps that need to be updated.

Has The Word Prediction Quality Gone Down Since KitKat?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 01:11 PM PDT

I've noticed this a lot recently on my Nexus 5X N Preview(and Marshmallow). I didn't have a concrete example until yesterday: I swiped to type "good" and it put in "goos". The other options it gave were

  • goo's
  • Gould
  • gold
  • God's

I know this is a complete anecdote. I just wonder - have other people noticed a decrease in such quality? And would getting a different keyboard change the performance, or are they all linked to the same backend library.

Android 6.0 Vibrate Pattern, help

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 01:03 PM PDT

Hey all! I just updated my Galaxy S5 to Android 6.0.1 from 5.0.1. My text notification and call notification (vibration wise) are the same. However, my email now only does two very soft and small vibrates and I often miss them. I used to have "basic call" at high intensity so I would definitely know I received and email. I have googled help to no avail. Can anyone please help me out? What is going on?

Bonus points: As it stands now on my lock screen it shows Sat, 11 June for the date. Being I am in the U.S., it really throws me off. Is this now not change able? There is nothing in Date and Time for formatting any more..

Is the Galaxy S7 Edge compatible with cases and roms made for the standard S7?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 12:32 PM PDT

I'm still using a Verizon S3 despite having moved to two countries where Verizon isn't a thing. Its bootloader is locked so it's stuck on KitKat. It's definitely time for a new phone. I'll probably order an unlocked phone from Swappa, Ebay, or Amazon.

Anyways, If I get a Galaxy S7 Edge, can I use a Lifeproof case built for the standard S7? When roms become more common for the S7, can I install a standard S7 rom on an S7 Edge?

Locked out of phone and can't find a way to get in without wiping data.

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 04:10 PM PDT

I got a new Galaxy s7 about a month ago and it is great. However, about two weeks ago I started to have an issue with the lock screen. Every time I tried to enter my pattern (which is the same pattern I had used for ~3 years on my moto x), it would say that the pattern I entered is incorrect. This wasn't a huge deal as I could just use my fingerprint, so I decided to put off fixing it. About an hour ago I opened my phone and tried to unlock it with my fingerprint, but the phone says, "Draw pattern instead of using fingerprint recognition after restarting device to protect fingerprints". So now I have no way of gaining access to my phone.

I tried using Android Device Manager and using the Lock function, which is supposed to reset your password to one of your choice. However, after I enter a new password, a notification pops up saying "Since Google has verified that a screen lock is already set, the password you entered won't be needed."

I also came across a forum post suggesting using Samsung Find My Mobile, however I don't have a Samsung account and I don't have access to my phone to set one up.

This is all very frustrating as now I don't see a way to gain access to my phone without doing a factory reset due to ADM malfunctioning(?), and the original pattern I set somehow changing.

Has anyone else had a problem like this, or have any experience on resetting the password?

Despite this as soon as I posted a picture two people i know who are following me on my personal account followed me. Does instagram notify your followers when you get a new account?

Mediaserver causing massive battery drain on Galaxy S5, help

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 04:04 PM PDT

Over the last few days I've noticed my phones battery has been having issues. I looked into it and it looks like something called Mediaserver has gone nuts, it's taken up 50% of my battery alone today. My phone right now has dropped from 20% to 8% just sitting next to me with the screen on, doing nothing. Normally I will get two days out of the phone before I have to charge it, I'm barely getting 10 hours now with very limited use. I don't normally use my phone too much. I sometimes listen to music, play Pokemon Shuffle, check Facebook, Twitter etc and it's never been a problem before the last few days. Can someone help me stop this battery drain and figure out what's causing it? It's also causing the phone to heat up when it should be on standby.

Nothing is running in the background from what I can tell, but I only check the active applications menu and there is nothing to end in there. I've tried restarting and haven't installed anything new in the last month. I'm unsure of how to proceed from here.

In car reminders with NFC tags?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 10:02 AM PDT

Hi,

Is it possible to place an NFC tag in my car so whenever I enter the car, I place the phone near the tag and it would open a list of reminders that I put in a list that is only for the car (stuff that can only be done outside)?

How do I keep centered on Maps?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 03:50 PM PDT

My location stays centered on Google Maps only if the screen hogging search box & info bar are present. When those items are gone my blue dot location indicator quickly moves off the map .. there's no background scrolling. I don't recall that happening on my rooted G2.

Phone is a non-rooted AT&T Galaxy Note 4 on 5.1.1. Is this typical behavior?

Force touch on android from developer options?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 09:36 AM PDT

Hello, I remembered now that few months ago I saw an option in developer options on my android phone: "Pointer position". It shows the information about the touchscreen such as position of the finger on X and Y axis, but also pressure and size of the finger on the screen. It seems that android can recognize (via software I guess) the pressure of the finger. Isn't this about the same function that is present on Apple's Iphone 6s?

What's the difference between the apple method and the android method to recognize the press? Why nobody used this thing in order to make a launcher that emulates force touch?

I personally don't care about force touch at all, it's just my personal curiosity ;)

Help with a non-fuctioning app overlay on my Redmi Note 3

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 08:01 AM PDT

Last Monday I upgraded from an S4 to a Redmi Note 3 (AT&T network). I've been installing all my old apps and getting everything set up, but I noticed an issue with one of my apps that I didn't have on the S4. I play a Japanese language game and use a translator app to help me through some parts of it. I can function without it but it helps me out a lot. The problem is the overlay for the app won't come up on my new phone. I had an issue previously with the S4 where it wouldn't let me install apps if I had my blue light filter running and I'm wondering if it's a similar issue because the Note 3 does have a blue light filter installed by default, but even having it off doesn't seem to help - the overlay simply doesn't come up when I turn the app on no matter which settings I've messed with (couldn't figure out how to disable the filter if it's possible to do so on the device). Let me know if you need any additional info. Any help is appreciated!

Edit: Here is the app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nacho.padtranslate&hl=en

So guys, how do you deal with the nuisance of ads automatically opening the play store and vibrating the sh*t out of your phone?

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 05:46 AM PDT

Seriously, one ad literally put the phone on constant vibration for more than 10 seconds! I had to close my chrome tab to disable it.

Is there any way to block ads like these?
