EDIT: Thanks to /u/Keule9911/, he recommended GKM Touch and it works fantastically, it initially needed some calibration but is intuitive and incredibly simple. It just works!

I've tried and tried using it, but either I don't undertand it or it needs some special calibration that's just not easy to find, every time I try mapping analogs, the options that seem to do something go bonkers, they show pointers that do not do touch unless they are used in quick succession and they don't really controll at my will, they do move when I tell them to move but the way they do t is unpredictable....

Long story short, it doesn't seem to work and I'm getting tired, there doesn't seem to be alternatives, there's the sixaxis one that works for sixaxis and nothing else as far as I know, then there are a few chinese ones where you more or less have to guess how to use them (I got the nibiru one working once but only for fixed buttons, I hadn't had the same luck in recent times).

For reference the controller I have is a bluetooth one that's fairly HID standard (the controls work as intended with most games that have it without mapping, as opposed to the ipega I used to have) and I try these apps with my xbox 360 wireless controller just in case there's something wrong with hid.

All in all, I don't seem to have any luck to map touch controls, what are your experiences? Do any of you still use some mapping tool? Does it work with new versions of android? Are we, not-moga-owners, doomed for most games?

Amateur surgeon 4: re-generations?!

Posted: 15 Jun 2016 03:55 PM PDT

So there have been some YouTube videos tossed around showing gameplay of amateur surgeon 4, and even a link to the Google Play page, and sure enough, licensed by adult swim, it was there in all its 2 year wait glory.

But it's not available in North America...

From what I've seen, it's about dr. Ignatius bleed being brought back from the dead, and going into the past to do surgeries from all 3 games, and some new ones. It removed the blood bag system, but some familiar faces might be tag partners! cough Mr giblets cough and there's coins and diamonds, cards for upgrading tools, all kinds of crazy stuff!

But it's not in North America yet...

Clicker without iap?

Posted: 15 Jun 2016 10:09 PM PDT

Hello need clicker like cookie clicker in web versions - without iap. In playstore many clickers bit all with iap. In need without. May be it would be paid version but I'm hate iap.

Now I'm find that only Bitcoin billioner fits some of my preference - it have iap but you can farm 25 of iap coins per day easy so iap don't hurt in this game

Common mistakes most mobile developers make (from my point of view, feel free to contribute)

Posted: 15 Jun 2016 03:37 AM PDT

Foreword:

Ok so i owned different smart phones for more than 5 years now and i have tried many mobile games and only a handful of them lasted longer than one week on my phone. This has many reasons, maybe i just don't fit in the mobile gaming category or i am too old. I am 30 years old and i played my first video game when i was a 4 or 5 years old, i cannot remember exactly but what i do remember are the platforms i played on. It was very common that almost everybody had an old gameboy but before those were released you did either own an Atari, an Amiga or a Commodore 64. My brother got an Amiga for his 10th birthday and even tho he is 5 years older than me it didn't take long for him to ask me to boot up games for him simply because i spent a lot of time on his Amiga and learned all sorts of stuff.

Back in the days you could spend months playing a single game because of two reasons:

  1. The games were fun

  2. Parents restricted playtimes so you don't sit in front of the computer all the time

Attention!

This is not a you are wrong, your app sucks because of X post, it's merely a personal advice coming from a longtime gamer and i am pretty sure there are more people out there thinking like this.

On Topic

Anyways, testing out different games on mobile has made me come to a conclusion on why the games are so god damn awful (energy mechanics and in-app purchases aside) so let's begin:

1. More rights than a game should have

Luckily, the play store tells you which rights an app needs and i already encountered games that require the right to access phone calls or contacts. I am fine with an app accessing my media, after all there have to be resources saved there but damn, why would you need to access my phone calls or contacts informations? This will instantly keep you getting installed on my phone.

2. Playing music and sounds hours before one can actually access the settings menu

I like to play while watching TV or while i listen to music via headphones (e.g. in Bus/Train) but some games play music while they download additional data and all you can do is sit there, wait for the data to download and turn down your phones volume or completely turn the volume off. Why would you do this?

3. HQ graphics only

I get it, we live in a high-tech society, everyone running around with a phone with the power of a PC that used to take up space the size of our own body but do you really expect everyone having the latest phones? My phone is almost 2 years old so that may be a problem but on some games i can't even load up the title menu, it crashes probably because of missing RAM, should it rally be like that? Whats your target customer group, those 12 year olds that create websites via kits with 20 different graphics animations and 8 neon colors as backround (many of us have been there)?

Add a performance efficient option, not only in terms of textures but mostly in terms of animations. There are people that enjoy a game running at full FPS way more than a game with fancy graphics.

4. Forcing the player through a tutorial

Years ago i played a game on PC, was a side scroller, i enjoyed it for a couple of months until i got bored and yesterday they released it on mobile so i though it would be nice to play this while being on public transportation. I do know that games need additional data so i load them up at home for the first time where i got my WiFi access. So i created my character and i get into the tutorial right? I mean sure, that's how it is, people seem to have forgotten how to play games, there's usually basic mechanics on how to use skills, how to attack, how to move but it seems like developers think that their users have never played a game before. So you get forced to play the tutorial, problem was the tutorial lasted longer than 45 minutes. By that time i got fed up and uninstalled the game.

We get it, you want players, even the noobiest players of the noobgroup so you tell them how it works but damn, make it optional and don't force players to spend that small amount of premium currency you gave them on the tutorial stuff like fasten up build time or hire a new character. Make the tutorial skippable, you are not making any friends if you force a person to klick your highlighted shit for more than 5 minutes unless you are targeting those 4 year olds that pay with their parents money (nothing personal kids, it's the devs that are to blame).

5. Pay to win content

I can't blame mobile devs on this, every developing company needs to take this into consideration. If you want to make money in the short term, adding pay to win content is your way to go. If you want to make money on the long term and you add pay to win content, your game has to be freaking great and you need to have a good purpose of making it pay 2 win (e.g. Magic the Gathering, huge playerbase for centuries, constantly changing and adding content).

If you don't have this concept being one of the first to publish an idea you have to make it competitive for free and paying players (e.g. League of Legends, only visual pay content). Sure, you won't make as much money at the start but if you really want to make your game being competitive you need to give everyone the same chances. If your basic game is good, you'll get more players and eventually make more money than you could ever do with pay2win content because on pay2win games player may stop paying AND playing at some point. If it's not pay2win you'll get more players overtime and if a player enjoys your game, they'll support you buy paying for stuff (visuals).

6. Keep it simple

I've checked out games that had like 12 icons on the main screen, e.g. Crafting, Summoning, etc. and clicking on one of those icons just led to more icons with more functionality. It's a damn mobile game, people want to boot it up quickly, do some stuff, pack it back in their pocket. Bloating your game with functionality will only result in the player booting up the game and once it's loaded they are wondering what they actually wanted to do because your icons are just confusing them, eventually they'll end up making something else than they wanted to (remember those times when you went into the kitchen, checked the fridge and walked out with nothing, only to realize all you wanted was to get a glass of water?).

In case you want to add new and complex functionality to your game, you have to find a way to make people understand how to adapt to that functionality. Take Hearthstone for example, i personally don't play it but even then i like it because they kept it really simple and yet you can create complex play moves. This is a successful strategy and it's your job to figure out how to do something like that instead of having the user learn about quantum mechanics to understand your game.

I'll give you a quick chart on what i mean, all you need to do is figure out how to combine those two:

  • Simple mechanics => easy to learn => more fun

  • Possibilities => more to explore => more fun

Conclusion

Being a software developer, i know how hard it is to develop and code applications/games. Telling you that your app won't succeed if you don't follow these steps won't do because i got nothing on my own hands to prove it to you, that's because i have never published a game and work for a software company (our customers are happy tho) instead of being my own boss. All i do is share my experience about gaming on mobile while taking in consideration what's fun to me. Maybe people will agree on some topics that i wrote, i guarantee there are also people that will disagree. There are also exceptions that don't fit into my topics but those exceptions got one key element, they have no energy-system in other words you can play as much as you want whenever you want! Those games don't fit in all of my advices but in some of them, for example the only game that i have been able to enjoy more than 2 months on mobile are games created by BScotch Shenanigans. I don't know how BScotch managed to do this but even tho the game /r/crashlands looks nice, it really runs smooth, it's simple yet complex, the tutorial explains stuff that people may not know (the crafting system, materials etc.) instead of trying to make them learn how to walk on two feet. To me they pretty much nailed it with all of their games. There's no energy limit in the games, every game is freaking simple to learn and a lot of fun. This sounds like advertisement but seriously they nailed it. Another game worth mentioning is Knights of P&P 1 + 2. Awesome old school RPG with fun elements. FF Record Keeper does a good job, too, giving you all the nostalgia of all the final fantasy games for your mobile experience but it's slightly too complex for my taste, still a great game, played it only for a couple of hours and currently enjoying FFBraveExvius.

So yeah, that's a shitton of text up there but i wanted to post this because to me it seems mobile devs are just repeating their mistakes over and over again.

Please don't bash me for grammar mistakes :)
