Is OneClickRoot.com a trustworthy website?

Posted: 24 May 2016 01:58 PM PDT

I've not rooted a device before, because I've always been content with what I've got.

However, I've got a DOPO EM63 tablet running Android 4.1.1. My wife wants to let one of our kids have it, but the essential software the kid needs runs on at least Android 4.2.2.

According to https://www.oneclickroot.com/device/dopo-em63-tablet/ I can put a kernel up to 4.5 on it.

That website has me downloading and running software on my desktop computer, which makes me a little nervous. Is this site trustworthy? And will I really be able to put 4.5 onto a DOPO EM63 if I run their stuff?

What is the Connections Optimizer?

Posted: 24 May 2016 10:29 AM PDT

I have a galaxy s6, and lately this pop up has shown up at least once a day saying "Unfortunately, Connections Optimizer has stopped" before crashing all my open apps. What is this, and how do I fix it?

Problem copying files to SD card

Posted: 24 May 2016 12:50 PM PDT

I have a Samsung S5 I've recently bought a new Samsung SD card as my last one was corrupting photos (not a Samsung SD card). I've just tried drag and dropping music onto the SD card and I get one of two things. 1) The device has stopped and unable to copy (or words to that effect) 2) just the 'copying' window and no movement.

Before the new SD card copying was no problem. Any ideas?

Nexus 5 Security Update Issues

Posted: 24 May 2016 01:28 PM PDT

Hey all, it seems I'm having some issues updating my Nexus 5...

I have the notification that a new update has been downloaded, so I press the install button and it takes me to the screen where I press "restart & install". From there the Android with the loading bar appears, and then a menu that says "are you sure you want to install the untrusted zip?". I go down with the volume key to "Yes - THIS CANNOT BE UNDONE" (is this normal?). I'm taken to another loading bar the phone restarts, and nothing seems to have changed. When I go to settings it says my security patch level is still at February 1, 2016.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

I'm on 6.0.1, not rooted or anything, I bought the phone second hand.

Permanently stop contacts from transferring to car.

Posted: 24 May 2016 02:49 PM PDT

Hey all,

I've got a newer car with an awful bluetooth integration system (2014 Mazda 6). Every time I get into the car and power it on, the infotainment system goes through a process of booting up and connecting to the phone. This process takes about 15 seconds or so.

After it is done with that, the car proceeds to download the contacts from my phone. I have quite a few contacts, so this takes 1-2 minutes. That doesnt sound like a long time, but I am unable to play from bluetooth during this time. Only silence or FM radio comes through the speakers. If possible, I would like to change this so my phone does not share contacts with the car.

Also, when I uncheck the share contacts option in bluetooth, it magically comes back on. It did not do this with my iPhone.

Background Information

Phone: BLU Life One X

OS Version: 5.1

Car: 2014 Mazda 6 Touring

Is there any application or modification I could use to remedy this issue? Any help would be awesome. Thanks guys!

ELI5: The GreyBus protocol

Posted: 24 May 2016 07:57 AM PDT

It's a new piece of software that google has developed for project Ara, I've done some googling and the best I could get is that it has something to do with multi-tasking management.

Now, I have some technical knowledge, but I'm far from expert.

So I came here, can anyone explain this in simple language?

A little reading material

Is 59% cell standby normal for an AT&T S7 Edge?

Posted: 24 May 2016 09:40 AM PDT

When my phone got down to 25% last night I looked at the battery stats to see my SOT (8% battery drain, about 3 hrs, kinda normal) but I noticed that the cell standby was by far the biggest battery drainer. Second was Android system at 14%. I was also on WiFi all day. What gives? Normal or nah?

[xpost from /r/techsupport] How to copy files to an android 5.1.1 external sd card over ssh?

Posted: 24 May 2016 03:01 PM PDT

Heya folks -

Here's my situation. I have a Samsung S5-mini running Android 5.1.1. It is not jailbroken, and I am not permitted to jailbrake it (It's a personal phone that I use for business, and my company has very explicitly prohibited jailbroken devices). I use it to play mp3s stored in an external SD card (/mnt/extSdCard/Music/). I've installed this SSH server app on the phone and it works perfectly for copying files off the phone. I'd also like to be able to go the other way, and copy (via scp or rsync) mp3 files from my desktop to the phone. This is where things go wrong.

Starting in Android 5, Google tightened the permissions settings so that an app cannot write to external storage outside of it's own sandbox directory. This means that when I log in via the ssh app, I can't write to /mnt/extSdCard/Music/.

<redacted>:/mnt/extSdCard/Music/mp3 $ touch ./blah <redacted>:/mnt/extSdCard/Music/mp3 $ ls *blah* *blah*: No such file or directory

My only recourse at this point is to power off the phone, remove the mini sd card (which requires taking off the phone cover and opening the case), plug it into an SD card reader, mount it (requires fuse and exfat), write the files, and put everything back. This is, obviously, a less-than-ideal solution.

Any ideas you guys have would be welcome.

Getting ready to sell my Nexus 5. Have a question about wiping the device.

Posted: 24 May 2016 11:03 AM PDT

As stated, going to sell my Nexus. So what's the best way to make sure everything is wiped? I've got the Nexus toolkit on my computer. Could I just lock and then unlock the bootloader to wipe everything?

I'm switching from Apple to Android in the fall and had some questions.

Posted: 24 May 2016 05:29 AM PDT

Currently have an iPhone 6 on Verizon.

I'm not entirely unfamiliar with Android, but I only had one very briefly when the Samsung Galaxy III was new. I've been an Apple junkie ever since, but I'm ready to switch back.

My plan so far seems to be to get the new Samsung Note when it comes out. I love the idea of the built in stylus and being able to take quick notes whenever I get a moment.

Questions:

  1. Is there any other Android phones that are a better option, in your opinion, and why?
  2. If you use a Note, can you tell me what kind of problems you've had with it so I know what to expect?
  3. As someone who has been on Apple for the last 6 years, I barely know how to work an Android. What are some tips to make the transition easier?
  4. I know it's a long shot, but if there are any paid apps on my phone will I have to pay for them again on Android, or is there a service that can "transfer" them?

I've already asked this question in AskReddit but I only got one helpful answer, I was thinking I might get better responses here. Thanks for your time!

Edit: Grammar. Still haven't had coffee.

Edit #2: I've done some research with the Nexus phone and it seems Verizon doesn't sell that. I know I could get a Nexus phone and activate it on Verizon's network, but that would require me to spend a LOT more money than I was planning on spending. I'm now currently looking at phones that update faster than Samsung.

How do you guys backup your photos from your Android device to your computer without changing creation dates?

Posted: 24 May 2016 12:24 PM PDT

This is the most annoying part of my phone. While most pictures I take go to the SD card, any photo saved from apps or misc stuff like screenshots all get saved to the device. I have about 8 gigs of pics I'm trying to move off my device to my computer or SD card but every method I've tried changes the created date to today's date. This screws p everything even it comes to organizing my photos by date. I have noticed if I copy the folder instead of the files it will preserve the modified date but everything else is screwed. How do you guys do it? Besides auto uploading to cloud of course.

Posted: 24 May 2016 12:22 PM PDT

Google photos makes thing so much complicated to use gallery. If i want one photo to be saved only in device storage but not in cloud then i have to "move it to trash" 1st from google photos app. Then i will have to clear trash or it will automatically be trashed within 30 days. When i delete from trash it delete device photo too !!!

How important is the FM Radio app and File manager app?

Posted: 24 May 2016 02:29 PM PDT

I run rooted CM13 and was going around disabling or uninstalling apps I don't like.

I wish to uninstall the file manager and use solid instead.

And also uninstall the FM Radio because it has an ugly icon and I never use it anyway. But Resurrectionremix OS had an inbuilt system app remover that required giving FM radio root permissions to actually delete something, so how important is it?

I'm still on Android 5.1. Is this problem better handled in Marshmallow or Android N?

Correcting voice dictation mistake inserts correct interpretation into the middle of the misinterpretation

Posted: 24 May 2016 02:22 PM PDT

This sort of blows my mind, but it's been going on since forever, or, for as long as I can recall. When voice dictation misunderstands something and provides an underline so you can select correct interpretation from a drop-down, it very often does not delete what was underlined, but just inserts the correct interpretation in the middle of the misinterpretation. I must then stop and, using Android's wretched editing controls, delete the misinterpreted text on the left and right of the inserted correct interpretation, and continue again until the same situation happens. No I've never owned an Apple phone, I imagine Steve Jobs firing the programmer who consistently failed to make this work in a manner that doesn't entirely frustrate the user.

Is this common behavior for you guys as well? Why does it happen, and is there any chance in hell that I can make it work properly?

How to disable direct share?

Posted: 24 May 2016 09:22 AM PDT

Basically what the title says. Since upgrading to Marshmallow on my HTC m9, direct share has been the most aggravating feature for me. It floods the section with whatsapp contacts I haven't spoken to in over 6 months, but doesn't include people I talk to almost daily over Facebook messenger for example.

Is there any way to simply disable direct share? I googled it but all I got back was results from November asking the same question and being told no.

Need help with a Hudl 2 running Android 5.1 [WiFi]

Posted: 24 May 2016 02:21 PM PDT

Hi all, this may be long so please bear with;

Been tasked with fixing a year-old Hudl 2 tablet running Android 5.1 (I think). Wifi is not working, all it says it "Turning Wifi on". Tried to do the on/off trick, no joy, so backed up and reset it. This didn't work, and now I'm stuck at the Setup wizard. I need Wifi to complete this process, so I'm effectively blocked out of accessing the tablet and Android. Anything I can try to fix this? There's no SIM or anything. Sometimes I can access the settings panel, if this helps.

Could it just be that the thing is knackered and needs repair? Really looking for some help on this, especially given it's not mine! Cheers

Why won't my S5 charge on my car's USB port?

Posted: 24 May 2016 12:06 PM PDT

I have a Galaxy S5 that has no issues charging in the house. I've always charged it by plugging the USB cable into a port on my bedside alarm clock, and it works fine. However, it will not charge in my car. I've tried several different cables, same result. When the phone is off, it brings up the charging icon. But it doesn't move. After an hour it may be at like 2%. If I try to plug it in with the phone on, it acts like it's charging, then thinks it's been unplugged..then two seconds later it thinks it's charging, then thinks it's unplugged. It does that cycle endlessly until you actually unplug the phone.

The car is a 2015 Ford Focus SE if that helps at all. Any advice? Thanks guys.

How would I get a HTC M8 on a TV for gaming?

Posted: 24 May 2016 12:02 PM PDT

Howdy folks,

I wish to display the screenof my HTC one M8 on a tv screen so I can play video games and stream from my PC. I've given a MHL cable a go but it didnt work and i dont want to try chromecast or the like as ive heard it's not great for gaming due to lag.

I also want to use it as a poor mans steam link via an app called moonlight. For me the HTC is the best method of doing this as my Ipad cant handle it. I could always just buy a steam link but theres no fun in that and id like to play mobile games on a big screen.

Anyone else done this and if so how? Ideas are welcome as well.

Confused. What is auto-sync actually doing?

Posted: 24 May 2016 04:29 AM PDT

I recently moved from ios to android and I'm confused as to what auto-sync really is.

I thought it was simply refreshing apps to receive new content, but that doesn't seem to be the case for a few reasons.

  1. I disabled sync for Outlook, yet still receive new mail/notifications instantly?

  2. There are some apps I use that don't even show up under the accounts section in settings, so I can't enable/disable sync for them. And yet I still receive notifications/content from those apps instantaneously, even with auto-sync disabled?

  3. Facebook. I don't even know what's going on here. Under settings - accounts - facebook, it says sync is disabled, and the option to 'sync all' is grayed out. There is a subheading 'general sync settings' that gives the option 'sync with your device'. Selecting that takes me to the subheading 'sync your Facebook account with other apps' with the option 'sync with your device'.

Why is it asking to sync Facebook with other apps? Is this something different to normal syncing? And when I select that option, it redirects me to Facebook with the message "Samsung Galaxy would like to post to Facebook for you. Who should be able to see these posts?'. Why is it now asking to permission to post to Facebook for me? Why do none of the other apps under settings - accounts act like this? Oh and, of course, despite sync being 'disabled' for Facebook, I still receive notification instantly.

So basically, I'm really confused about what 'sync' actually means in Android. When I disable auto-sync I receive the warning "you will not receive notifications about updates", and yet I absolutely do.

If anyone can clear this up I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I guess I'm not gonna miss the lucid 2 because it became slow as shit after 3 or so years, really frustrating! So really I'm looking for any phone thats not apple. Thank you
