Android's Wallpaper re-size feature somehow fails miserably for me (Pixelates)

Posted: 26 May 2016 10:33 AM PDT

Hello everyone,

I want to set a normal sized (for me) Wallpaper as my home screen Wallpaper. Here is an example:

http://i.imgur.com/1hsLOVJ.jpg

(It was a 36 MB PNG image (7680x4320), imgur converted it to a jpeg)

Because of this size, it will be perfectly smooth on my homescreen, right?

http://i.imgur.com/GzDv8CN.jpg

Not really, and I have no idea how to fix this.

I also tried the Wallpaper Wizard and other apps, still pixelated. It seems like absolutely no wallpaper app is capable of image interpolation. How can I get rid of this?

Thanks for any feedback!

I found a backdoor

Posted: 26 May 2016 09:36 AM PDT

Hi, today i found a file called "nihaooooo" ("hi" in Chinese) in /storage/emulated/legacy (my internal sd card path), it's a file 4 bytes long, and its content was "niha".

Its permission was set to 0770, owner root and group "1028" and it was last modified on 10 may 2016 at 22:16 GMT+1

I have also kingroot v4.8.5 installed (i've tried everything to install SuperSU, but it won't survive reboot), and i think it could give access to a backdoor to their owners

I have a Samsung GT-I9195I (s4 mini plus) with Android 4.4.4

Can you help me identify what created that file?

Want to switch back to android. Which device?

Posted: 26 May 2016 01:18 PM PDT

Basically the last android phone I owned was a Samsung S6. I'm currently on IOS, but would love to make the switch back. Any ideas? The reason I got rid of my samsung was the lag. Browsing the internet and play store was terrible, and I'm afraid to try out the S7 because of it. Should I get something from the market as it is now or wait for better things this year?

Huawei P9, can't change default launcher?

Posted: 26 May 2016 11:29 AM PDT

So, I ran the Arrow Launcher on my G4, and now after switching to a P9 I wanted to do the same.

But I can't change the default launcher. I open settings in Arrow Launcher, hit Set to Default Launcher and it just opens the default EMUI launcher instead of changing the default launcher.

Is this some kind of glitch or am I just forced to use the stock launcher?

unadopting SD card

Posted: 26 May 2016 01:01 PM PDT

I've had some problems with my 'adopted' MicroSD card, and have bought a faster, larger card for my Moto G 2nd gen. I'm worried about removing the old card - isn't it now part of the system? I've googled but can't find info about how to un-adopt a device.... what do I do?

Cheers!

Something is keeping my device awake (and occasionally warm) and draining battery life. How do I hunt down the problem?

Posted: 26 May 2016 07:32 AM PDT

I have an Asus Zenfone 6 running 4.4.2 (yes, I know there's an upgrade out - I tried it and downgraded again because of performance issues).

Everything was going fine until a few days ago, when I did an app update (I set the store to notify instead of update by itself, because there are a few apps I want to hold back). Ever since then something is keeping the CPU awake all the time; battery life suffers, and when I use it the phone gets warm in no time, when it took some serious work to get it to do that earlier. It also occasionally slows down. Reboots don't seem to achieve much of anything, as well as clearing the cache.

A malware scan with malwarebytes got zero hits.

It's rooted and I have Better Battery Stats as well as Wakelock Detector and the onboard stats in the options menu, but I can't figure out what is doing this. Here are the screenshots (note that I have BBS set to Kernel Wakelocks by API, otherwise I get a permanent "no stats collected yet" screen on the kernel wakelocks menu):

BBS: Other

BBS: Kernel

BBS: Partial

BBS: Alarms

BBS: CPU States

WD: CPU wakelock

WD: Wakeup triggers

Battery utility

Power manager utility

Additionally, a notification appears every now and then saying a battery-draining app has been detected, and lists it as "Android system" - which is, of course, impossible to close.

How do I identify which app is doing this so I can freeze it forevermore? I really don't want to do a wipe if at all avoidable.

US Android Pay in Europe

Posted: 26 May 2016 09:19 AM PDT

I will be going on vacation to Europe this summer, and I was wondering if I'd be able to use Android Pay there, even though it's not officially supported for users in Europe. Has anyone had any luck with this?

Problems with Overheating Phones

Posted: 26 May 2016 09:01 AM PDT

I had been using LG G3 for a little over a year and decided to get a new phone because the SD card slot started to fail. Another reason I wanted a new phone was because it would get quite hot to the touch after a few minutes of use.

I got Moto X Pure Edition, which I heard good things about. But it turns out that I experienced similar issues with this new phone. Namely, it would get quite warm (uncomfortable to hold with bare hands and even seems to give me a mild burn after an extended use) after about 5-10 minutes of "light" use. And by light, I mean casual web browsing or checking stuff on Facebook app. Not while charging and not playing any games, not making phone calls, and not doing anything computationally intense. It happens while I'm on LTE (not bad signals) or on home Wi-Fi (very strong signals). It happens with or without the protective case on although I do have a tempered glass protector on at all times on the screen.

I thought maybe I got a lemon and exchanged my phone a couple days later with anothet phone of the same model. Exact same thing. Quite cool when not in use but it gets warm after 5-10 minutes and starts to be a bit painful after about 20-30 minutes in my hand and I have to grab it like Im handling a hot potato.

Before I return the second Moto X, I got an LG G4 just to try it out. Amazingly, it's the same experience. Hot phone. They are all Marshmallow.

My question is, is this something to be expected from Android phones or smartphones in general? (My wife swears her iPhone never overheats to a point where it gets uncomfortable.) Again, I don't consider myself a heavy user. When I check the battery use stats, the biggest drainer is the screen (as is expected) and I don't see any app in the background particularly working too hard.

I want to hear whether other people have similar experiences and if that's the case, how they cope with it. If not, can you recommend a decent Android phone that doesn't have these overheating issues?

Old photo sphere images aren't recognized

Posted: 26 May 2016 08:19 AM PDT

Hi everyone, perhaps you've seen this issue. I have a lot of old photo sphere images. However on having changed phones, Google camera and Google photos displays the old images but won't give me the sphere icon. New sphere images get the icon and I can view it correctly.

Any ideas on how to force it to recognize my old images?

Google Photos help! (Galaxy S7 Edge)

Posted: 26 May 2016 12:02 PM PDT

I've been using the Galaxy S7 Edge since April and have not been able to backup using Google Photos. I was previously using a Sony Xperia Z5 and backup worked just fine.

I've tried creating a new album and backing up to that destination; neither the album nor the photos appear, even after going through the entire upload process. I've also tried uploading to an existing album; the upload process looks to go along without an issue, but the images never appear in the album.

Hoping someone here has a tip that can help be get past this issue!

My APN settings are correct and tethering always worked before the update. Anyone know what I can do?

Huawei y6 or Samsung galaxy grand prime

Posted: 26 May 2016 08:50 AM PDT

I am an iPhone user (sorry) but here is my situation:

I have a $125 credit with my carrier that is about to expire unless I use it, and it can only be used for a new device.

For $150 (minus my credit) I can get the huawei, or for $250 (minus credit) I can get the Samsung.

Regardless which one I get, I'll probably give it to my 8 year old (no plan, just to play games on) and I might steal it back if I ever drop my iPhone.

Thoughts? Value per dollar? My gut says Samsung because I know the brand, anyone have experience with huawei?

What is the coolest thing you do with your phone that you never realized was possible?

Posted: 25 May 2016 06:25 PM PDT

Just wondering what the unexpected uses of your phone are that you find delightful and incredibly useful. Because they're not really phones--they're little computers with a phone app. My favorite thing is this nagware app that helps me with goals.

Unlocked Note 5 Unable to Update to Marshmallow

Posted: 26 May 2016 02:35 PM PDT

I have a Note 5 that was given to me and it was originally supposed to used with AT&T. Since it was paid off, I unlocked it so I can use it with my carrier T-Mobile. I have not received the update for Marshmallow yet. Every time I try to check for updates, it says that there are no updates available because it is checking with the AT&T server. I contacted T-Mobile already and their tech support told me to Smart Switch to update my phone. Whenever I go into Smart Switch, it appears that it's looking for the update through the AT&T server, which still is showing me that there are no updates available. My boyfriend has AT&T and he was able to update his S6 today to Marshmallow so I know the update is available. Everywhere I look online tells me I'm screwed because I don't have service with AT&T so they won't release the update to me. Does anyone else have any experience with this and can guide me on how to update my phone? Rooting my phone makes me nervous so I'd rather not do that but if its the only way and if you can provide me with clear instructions, I may change my mind. Thank you in advance.

Downgrading from Lollipop ?

Posted: 26 May 2016 02:18 PM PDT

Hi all, I have a Sprint Moto X XT1056. Sprint is awful and has been cancelled as the only areas I could get service I could also pick up up free WiFi.

Essentially I've been using this phone as a camera/multimedia device... It's function as a phone isn't really needed anymore.

Well after pestering me for ages I finally upgraded to Lollipop and it's awful ! The battery life was cut in half and the WiFi capabilities of the phone have been decimated as I can no longer connect to certain WiFi I used to be able to without a hitch.

So is there any way to switch back to KitKat ? I don't know much about flashing or rooting phones but I can probably figure it out as I used to be pretty 'techy.'

It would be great to get kitkat back and remove all of Sprint's bloatware in the process, I just don't really know where to start or look.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is it possible to recover text messages after a hard reset?

Posted: 26 May 2016 06:36 AM PDT

Hey guys I got a question:

Is it possible to recover text messages after a hard reset?

I had a contact number of a guy that used to help me with school work. I didn't save his number because we only text each other once or twice every month. I did a hard reset on my phone because it wasn't working very well. I totally forgot to save him as I contact and now I lost his number. Is there a way to recover it?

Oh, I forgot to add I have a Galaxy S3

Thanks!

S6 edge having network connection issues?

Posted: 26 May 2016 08:01 AM PDT

Hey I hope this is the correct subreddit. If it's not I'm sorry and I can delete this post. I have the s6 edge and ever since the system update my phone has been having issues. I keep getting a notification that says "check network settings and try again." Also random apps keep getting put in offline mode. Apps effected are Facebook, Facebook messenger, rhapsody and my Google search bar. Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated.
