7 Million Nepal Earthquake Survivors to Connect With Family via Facebook

Earthquake in Nepal. Facebook didn’t only raise $10 million as a relief fund but also helped the victims connect with their families. Over 7 million people in Nepal connected to 150 million friends and family members through Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg said:

We activated ‘safety check’ and more than 7 million people in the area have been marked as safe. More than 150 million friends were notified and those updates let people rest easier and relief efforts remain focused.

He also mentioned that Facebook will donate an additional $2 million to local recovery efforts to help those in affected areas.Talking about social media’s active involvement for support in Nepal, WhatsApp is also being used by people to communicate with each other for rescue and relief efforts. Even Google has helped with Google’s Person Finder which is a free tool that doubles up as a registry or a message board for survivors. This app was developed first during the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and its aggregated data include registries run by CNN, the Miami Herald and the New York Times. This tool can be used by family or friends to locate missing people or loved ones.

Thankfully, the internet services in Nepal remain active and continue to help people stay connected.
